    Summary:
    1) Have a month by month calendar on your wall, so that you can see January through to December simultaneously.
    2) Remove anyone who's holding you back.
    3) Put your wake-up alarm on the other side of your bedroom so that you have to get out of bed to turn it off.
    4) When trying to get to sleep, leave your phone, laptop or other distracting things in another room.
    5) Make a shopping list and stick to it, DO NOT impulse buy.
    6) Make healthy foods easier to access than unhealthy foods.
    7) Change the size of your bowl to suit your goal. Smaller bowl: Lose weight. Larger bowl: Gain weight.
    8) Wear the same clothes on a rotating schedule to avoid wasting time deciding what to wear.
    9) Sell any distractions, such as games consoles.
    10) Get a gym membership at the nearest rather than the cheapest gym.
    11) Create an in-depth workout plan and stick to it
    12) Use phone reminders in your everyday life to ensure you don't forget anything important.
    13) Get an oura ring (or fitbit if this is too expensive).
    14) Switch to a bank that gives you instant spending notifications, such as monzo or starling bank.
    I'm not sure if I missed a point or if Andrew may have miscounted, so here's my own point 15.
    15) Print off Andrew's "This graph changed my life" graph's and have them in plain view in your bedroom.
    If you haven't watched the entirety of this video I definitely suggest you do, this summary is just meant for people who have watched the video and want a reminder/summary of the main content.

      For real, I sold my game console 2 weeks ago and have been so much happier with my life. Apparently I used games to numb the pain of regret from wasting my days playing games everyday so its a vicious cycle of playing games because it helps numb the pain thats caused by playing games all the time. Its like every other drug, you hate yourself for doing drugs and ruining your life so you do .ore drugs to escape that creeping feeling of regret. But at the end of the day, when we are in a nursing home and no body cares about us because we didn't contribute anything we just played games and only worried about being happy ourselves instead of fulfilled so we lived a life of selfish pursuit of happiness when we should be living a life of contribution, evolution, and fulfillment instead of always trying to be 'happy'.
      Happiness is the biggest marketing success story ever, the idea of the pursuit of happiness is why we have become so obsessed with consuming and having things that we forget happiness is just a pursuit, it can never be a place you can stay, it is inevitable that no matter how happy you think you are it is always temporary. Your parents will die, your health will decline, and people will betray you and the problems of the planetary suffering will wear you down and happiness will be harder and harder to catch even temporarily. But when you are fulfilled by living a life based on principles to identify with instead of opinions and veiwpoints and social groups then you are able to be a rock in times of suffering and when you realize trying to be happy is actually the most selfish way of thinking then you realize the only way to really be happy is to stop trying to be happy and just make others feel better be better grow more and learn more its all about contribution to your fellow humans and planet. Stop trying to be happy, be fulfilled by focusing on building strong principles, separating your opinions from identity, the quality of your life is the quality of your relationships, health is important, finances are important go learn the game of money if you wanna play a game, sleep is important, emotional awareness is important and most of all, just be. (Queue Tiesto "just be" song)

    Success breeding environment is an environment without distractions.
    - discipline comes with pursuing a passion
    - cutting of all noise that don't serve you: things, people, activities
    - minimalism helps to focus on the goal at hand: no unnecessary belongings, just a work station and morning routines

    For years of my life before bed i make a meticulous list of everything i need to do in the following day, and following weeks. There are things on there that i can leave on until the next day and things that have to be done that day - to have a little bit of choice takes of the pressure hugely. I rely on this to function productively. Also, I drink lots of water before bed so i have to pee in the morning and get out of bed to do so, and i leave my vitamins next to my breakfast, packed all my toiletries in the gym so i will only shower if i go to the gym, and many other things I've done to achieve exactly what you've explained. Looks like I'm getting it right :)

    3:42 has passed. The respect I have for you just increased a lot.
    This is EXACTLY my opinion for about a year now and I love that you talk about that. People don't realize, discipline costs willpower and we only have limited amounts of it. Instead of using the willpower to do the tactical side of things, we should instead use it to create the system (mostly environmental changes), so out environment will then, even when our willpower is low, push us to do the (tactical) things we set it up for.
    It's actually not only easier to be "disciplined" (I would rather call it consistent) but actually harder to procrastinate than doing things if we go that route with our willpower.
    You just described it in different words, which in turn inspired me from a different perspective.
    Thank you for that.
    Love your serious ambition about those topics. You don't seem to be just a guy who is motivated for a couple years and after reaching his dream stops. I think you will find ways to grow even after that, where most of the already few individuals settle. Peace

  • @JasonSchaeferGF
    @JasonSchaeferGF 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I totally agree with this and your critiques about the discipline advice. I was struggling to do the workout portion of my morning routine because I'd lay in bed pressing snooze. Sometimes I'd barely have time to make a smoothie (which I'm pretty religious about). I decided to take a more forceful measure. I found an app called morning routine that has an alarm setting where it can only be turned off by a specific barcode. Then, I put a bar code by the sink. This forced me to get up and grab a glass of water. The alarm allows you to build sequences, so I built one that had another barcode alarm go off 5min later. This barcode was located on the patio where I did my workout. Even if I was super tired or sleep deprived, once I had water and got to my yoga mat on the patio, I'd do the workout.
    I learned that sometimes it's best to use tools instead of relying solely on willpower and motivation. For a night owl lik me, that's esp important in the morning lol

    @inilashremot1058 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I like your practical approach. It's so fun. I take my alarm clock and put it in a locked box with the key in the other room... And there's another box with the cellphone's alarm ringing with another key at a different place. It's so fullproof I never go back to sleep after that. Wakes the hell outta me at 4 am

  • @H0listr

    Andrew, great Video as usual. Just got a reminder. Reminders are one of the worst tricks in your bag. I remind myself about this and that and that, eventually you just got reminders and all you do is reading reminders. Much more useful than reminders is to have a todo-lists. Ones that you will habitually look at specific times. Morning, lunch, before bed. I turned off all the reminders and notifications on my phone. Truth, I got reminders for BIG things, like B-days or meetings. But those are things that happen once a week in my case or not even that often. They do not pose constant flow of distraction. Thats what reminders are, distractions from focused work, at least for me.
    Very powerful thing I found is to check your to-do list after finishing one task. For example, I finished at gym, on the way back I will check my to-do and decide right there on the spot what is the next thing I will finish when coming back home (after shower).
    This leads back to your mentioned planning, which you count under environment manipulation. You don’t overthink, you just follow a script. This is true for a lot of tasks, it’s a habit building strategy. Still, if I come home and do not start working on that task, which require discipline or motivation, I will not do it.
    got more things to add to that topic, but I said ONE reminder. Connect with me if you want to hear more feedback.
    Thanks for your compact, clear and structured presentation.

    I get your point.. Its probably ideal to balance between you environment and personal discipline.. But if you rely on environment, then all it takes to pull you out of your routine, is exactly an unexpected change of your environment.. If you rely on discipline, nothing will get in your way.. So i guess you could say, changing you environment is the easiest, discipline is the most valuable.. Both, is god-mode😎

    Hello I have also heard it said many times over several years that to solidify and reaffirm good habits that you are just starting to implement, you should make it easy to do the good habits and hard to do the old bad habits. I heard the idea the first time in a 1981 women's magazine article about dieting and weight loss.

  • @JordanTheMann
    @JordanTheMann 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Another way I improve success by changing my environment is to modify my daily routine with activities I’m more likely to enjoy. For example if I don’t feel like going to the gym I’ll try cycling or swimming instead. This makes my daily exercise a more enjoyable experience and I’m less likely to associate it with actual work and it becomes more of a productive hobby.
    But I definitely agree that self-discipline is unreliable at times and the less temptations you have surrounding you the less likely you’ll relapse to old or bad habits. Thanks for the great words of wisdom Andrew!

    Andrew, also about the change. I''ve been researching lately about the change itself, how does it come about, how can people be more in charge of themselves (in other words- conscious beings rather than unconscious, compulsive, impulsive beings). One of the things that you've mentioned of path of least resistance makes sense. But at the same time, does it follow the rules to make you more and more conscious? I see how improving your environments for goal seeking may make it easier and more efficient to reach goals. But how does these things make you become more and more conscious in itself? Or what kinds of things does that?

    When Andrew said CSGO, I was starstruck. I had over 2300 competitive wins with my main and smurf a/c combined. Haven't played the game for a year now. Thankfully, I didn't have to sell my laptop, the f2p update did the job for me. This video is practical and logical. +rep

    Another option for the phone as alarm or needing it close by when on-call or similar issues is to check (or add) a maximum power saving option. Many phones have these, they essential turn them into feature phone with basics non-internet features so the calls/texts/alarm/timer is there but social media drains aren't, and some take a minute or so to turn back to standard so enough to break habits of automatically doing it and instead turning it back only when it's needed for something.

    Its funny I often am accused of being lazy for implementing some of these tactics. Ironically, its these tactics that enable me to get anything done! I now need to learn to not listen when I know I shouldn't.

  • @michaelsotomayor5001

    there's a difference i've learned between easy way outs and discipline.. Someone once told me discipline is like the battery on your phone.. the more you consistently are using it the quicker it will turn off.. (lets imagine a cheap phone because honestly we all don't have THAT discipline we want to have) So the less you have to USE your discipline the less burnt out you will feel and the easier it will be to do what? To change your conscious decision making into a subconscious ability. What happens then? You will AUTOMATICALLY start making the right decision rather than depending on your discipline entirely to do so. And this is why it is important to make life easier which leads to proper decision making. Something that I have lost touch in because I started relying solely on discipline; thank you for showing a different perspective on how to attain a better lifestyle through these practices

    I've seen a lot of life-hack, motivation, etc. - type videos and yours are by far the most profound that I've come across.
    The video about the compounding success vs your memory of you got there, the video where you explain the concept behind this one.. those all really got me revisiting thoughts that I've had organically but then recontextualizing them in these frameworks that you've explained so well.
    Thanks so much.
