I recently discovered my great granfather and his brother both served in the Cameron highlanders and both survived the Somme, ive always had a penchant for the bagpipes but couldn't fathom out why, thats why I joined the Scots Guards unbeknown of the Scottish connection .
Wishful thinking, the British Empire was built on the labor of Scotsmen more contributory than English, Welsh or Northern Irish read up on your history.
Oh, my child - you've not met war. And think how terrifying it'd be to see a man charging at you, with his skirt flying up in the air, and flashing his big, long... bayonet at you! lol
Love the yells during The Black Bear "Yeeeeaaaaahhhhh". On a poignant note those laddies of WW1 vintage at 0.44 look incredibly young, very moving picture.
Cannot remember the War Artist, but saw a superb painting of an actual Scottish regiment resting after a battle in WW1. Sitting and standing in the mud and the blood , in their Kilts. Sheers guts. This reminds me of that painting
If a man doesn't like the pipes, don't know if I can trust him - I have 1/4 Scottish blood in me but I feel a 100% connection with my Grandmas side. Proud of both my Spanish-Mexican-Scottish roots but the strongest one is the Highlander DNA deep in me...God bless Scotland...
Let's just face it with their bagpipes the people of Scotland has given to the world the deep breath and strength and courage and bravery of song that commits men and women to continue to war and to not waver during times of threats and while in turmoil. You don't listen to those Scottish tunes and even consider giving in. With the exception of Christian songs and hymns and spiritual songs it is the bagpipes like the sounds in this video that encourage, move us to go on and fight valiantly. Thankfully, those tunes will not change...they continue on for generations.
My brother was in the First Highlanders and his Son also went into the First Highlanders when he grew up My brother was a piper he taught lots of other people to play the pipes Terry Stockdale because the Pipe Major and his Son played the Kettle drums ❤❤❤

Terrific recordings. Colonial photographs are also very interesting. How and where to locate colonial-era audio recordings of the Black Bear and/ or Sutherland Highlanders?
I'm really confused, there seems to be a different version of Highland Laddie for the scots guards. It sounds great, but wondered if anyone could shed some light.
Wait nevermind, the difference is that the Scots guards play it in massed band (brass and reed as well as pipes and drums) and this one is only pipes and drums
I agree even though i served with Gordon Highlanders. My father served with Black watch in korea. He would call the Glorious Glosters the bravest of the brave
Scots were left behind as rearguard at Dunkirk and scots died disproportionately in british army in the last war . Northern Irish meanwhile had no conscription in ww2. Scotland gets no EU rights after brexit , ni does though. A pattern anyone?
All volunteers the Battalion officers died in battle alongside other ranks they led from the front. Men from all over empire volunteered some travelling thousands of miles to serve the empire. True some senior Staff Officers would come up short .
My Grandad and his two brothers served in WW1 with the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders and all three survived the somme and made it home.Brave men.

Right. This makes me want to join the front lines and fighting a major battle. "Henry, have you taken your meds?"
