His regret for the things that He did to her came too little and too late. To know that the woman that he kept comparing Ruyi to was the one that was killing all of his children must really sting, Ruyi Only wanted to love him and stay by his side and because of his arrogance and self importance he ruined it.
Regret and remorse are different. Regret is selfish , they only care about getting rid of the guilt they feel asap regardless of how it's done. Remorse is actually making up for your mistakes and hurt you caused , no matter what it takes and not demanding to be forgiven just so they can rest well at night. This guy .....is more on regret catagory
Hongli was able to talk with Ruyi and get to the bottom of why he drank deer blood wine. He still had some self-reflection at this point and did show regret (although an apology would have been great too!). He did listen to her still. He doesn't know how to handle stress and takes it out on Ruyi. There was still hope from him, but I think the moment he turned cold to Yihuan during her time of sorrow when she confronted him about the fake contraception potions, that, for me, is when he truly started to slip away.
I so agree what is with him striking her the one you say you care about so many times. Why did he go there with her and no one else. How long can she keep feeling with confidence oh yes he must love me. Although it is one of my favorite scene's. The drama. I love Ruyi. I love how they all look so beautiful. I love their voices. I love the theme song. So beautiful.
