By far the best breakdown of this theory I have ever seen. Simple, nuanced and included anecdotal evidence. Thank you!

You just saved my Masters degree and my skin because it’s been breaking out from stress of understanding these works, but with u it’s waaaaay comprehendible and tangible.

Interesting concept. Could the "doomer" mentality of working a mundane job and then using substances on the free time be considered repressive desublimation? I'm reading a book on Straight Edge culture and radical sobriety. It is quite clear that sobriety is seen as an active choice of liberation rather than as a moral tool to increase worker productivity within the system.

What’s the book called? Sounds interesting.

@@Bigplatts Straight Edge and Radical Sobriety - Edited by Gabriel Kuhn
It consists of interviews and essays and seems to give a good overview of the movement.

Hey, great video. I would appreciate it if you would put one or two books, preferably by the author at hand, that for the first time named and explored the keyword, into the description. Otherwise secondary literature on that very author's idea is fine too.
    Thanks and best regards!

I've been reading One Dimensional Man for the past 3 weeks, I'd recommend at least looking into Marcuse's concept of the 'happy consciousness', or the first section of One Dimensional Man (One Dimensional Society) which defines the conditions that bring about repressive desublimation. :)

Interesting. So for Marcuse, is the idea of liberation itself repressed desublimation ?
    Have you shifted to Montreal?

Marcuse has addressed the problem of Art also ...(lecture on tube...art as a revolutionary weapon... a few rough quotes......the movement would have to re-capture re-structure authentically non-conformist liberating qualities of traditional art
This aesthetic form that must be attacked and shattered for a new liberating culture for creative works which express the unsublimated reality which may appear to a consciousness and sensibility willing to change the established Reality,,,,,,,
would be interesting to group together his ideas. about what the authentic qualities of art are ....

I think this misses the point. Capitalism has de sublimated pleasure. Everything is permitted. But the pleasures are commodified. And pleasure seeking serves to repress by siphoning off revolutionary energies.

The biggest flaw with Marcuse’s logic is that capitalism is not the element of society in which keeps you oppressed. There is unregulated greed that has taken advantage of this system, yes. But even those people aren’t using capitalism at this point. They have extracted enough wealth to ignore the laws and pay politicians off to dissolve the regulations. Capitalism can actually be the only thing that allows you to liberate yourself from the mundane nature of corporate slavery. Having the freedom to do this is a foundational part of America. We should stop blaming capitalism, and blame legal bribery in the form of Super PACs and corporate lobbying. We should dissolve monopolies, and reign in the banks. None of these institutions are using capitalism. They have abused it, and now the working class citizen who is trying to use capitalism to escape this system is under attack. While the megalomaniacs laugh themselves to the bank.

Capitalism means private owners of the means of production, not “freedom”

Disagree. Capitalism is inherently exploitative. People using the system to get higher up the ladder isn't liberation, it's participation in a way that steps on the people below to get higher up.

Right on. One point to add, by me. The withholding of advanced energy technology and the intentional antiquation of humankind is the major cause of our slavery as people. Nobody needs to pay for energy. Energy is work, literally. Energy holds a charge, which is a burden. If advanced energy devices were being used, freely, in a capitalist society, guess what, genius, the cost of production would be so low that everyone in the world would be a millionaire. Where is slavery now?
