    thank you, very informative video! lots of valuable dense information I have to unpack and understand at another time, so imma gonna drop my timestamp notes for my future self:
    0:53 - "seduction" term marks a shift in Baudrillard's thinking about systems, formerly he was using the term "reversibility"
    2:28 - what is relationship between reversibility and seduction?
    9:55 - essence vs appearance, in this arrangement we have a new split between an opposition and a dialectic. unchanging universals vs appearance
    10:30 - as opposed to dialectical thinking, Baudrillard wants to maintain a distinction between the two so each of them can engage in a kind of mutation or development. unchanging universal on one side can thus undergo through superficial mutations
    11:11 - Judith Butler's conformity - "not sex that dictates gender", submits biology to the apparent status of appearance
    16:20 - Baudrillard was saying by submitting to that logic to a patriarchialized conception of identity to reduce it a limit of appearance, limiting change and the possibility of possibility itself

    You're a great teacher, I hope you have a long, fruitful career in a academia teaching students these ideas. Thanks for your many videos, particularly the ones on Baudrillard.

    18:40 I'm pretty sure that seduction is not about bringing something over to yourself in order to engage with it on your level of weakness. It is not about motivating growth through losing or being wrong. Instead, seduction is about creating a space of uncertainty and possibility in which both individuals can engage in a playful and strategic exchange of meanings and desires. It is about challenging the fixed meanings and categories that define our understanding of reality, and creating new possibilities for embodied experience and relationality.

      i believe that he could have worded that better but i don’t see the two interpretations being mutually exclusive. The notion of bringing close something on your layer of weakness is that thing is in your layer of weakness meaning it is that in which you do not have a totalizing grasp or codification for and that movement of bringing that which we are unacquainted that which is a play on appearances that which we don’t , and can never know produces a realm of playful possibility outside of our traditional symbolic conceptions which ruptures the rigid or dominant by refusing its logic of codification or understandability, weakness here being akin to accepting or bringing-close un-understandability the mystical or sacred that which can’t be stably disclosed.

    Very interesting, thank you for this. Did Baudrillard have a definition for this approach or was it just discussed as a term? Like in dialectics, you have "dialectical" but here? A "seductive" approach? "Seductive tension" in a binary? Lmao sorry this is supposed to be serious

    Can you make a video about digital photography and why Baudrillard had a problem with it?

    in this line of thinking what would oppose the simulation/hyperreality in his other works?

    • @nin2832
      @nin2832 ปีที่แล้ว

      or is this a case of reality resigning and letting illusion take hold as the primary form

    • @niksharma1338
      @niksharma1338 ปีที่แล้ว

      What I took from seduction’s connection to simulation is the way in which seduction is the process by which absolute truth reaches superficiality (by means of mutation etc) such as biology (absolute truth) being represented by a symbolic diagram in a textbook (superficiality). In this situation, the textbook diagram - as an imitation of reality - is a simulacra and by circulating such similar and superficial representations, a hyper reality / simulation is formed.

    • @nin2832
      @nin2832 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@niksharma1338 i think the example given with absolute truths and superficiality was just that, a means to exemplify the concept, not the chief point of the idea thereof, i would also imagine he meant superficiality as just the outwards appearance, not like in simulacrums/hyperreality where the point made is that the clones propagating have supplanted the reality, the referent (at least, thats my most succinct way of putting it, this of course being the case if i even understand it wholly); i see tho that even with your given premise you ultimately ascertain that it is indeed an act of superseding no?

    I was systematically seduced by my uncle's wife for years, she was at least 10 years older than me and I was between 20 - 25 years old. I didn't do anything with her but I see her in my dreams which involve intercourses and I wake up with huge a regret and shame. Then, when I realize that was a dream, I become the happiest person.
    Should I see a therapist for this situation and could systematic seduction or seduction consider as an abuse?

    17:45 "Spectral scientific logic." Here's a word (spectrum) being used in a way that takes some knowledge and imagination to interpret, even though the idea is very simple. "Spectral logic" would sound crazy to a scientist by the way. The resulting "single overarching identity" is an imprecise way to say "a false representation of other people's lived experience." Too bad if you didn't say that more plainly, since this is the mindset of oppression!
    I really appreciate your efforts. They have made continental philosophy accessible to me. But let's face it, your language strays from any vernacular. Philosophers become figures of fun thereby. You are doing yeoman's work already, so just tone down your language and you'll have a million subscribers.
