    For those chirping about this being a deal breaker, guess you were wrong. The lens guard IS removable/replaceable. I would strongly advise that you take advantage of Insta360's FREE lens guard service for the first year if you can help it. I would use this either out of warranty or in an absolute emergency, you do this at your own risk! For Insta360, I hope you will open this up for end user to have the option of replacing it themselves, I think you increase your sales ;)

    My guess is they added 2 drops of adhesive to the metal parts to make it un removable by hand, you can even see the glue in the video.
    Probably a patent issue with gopro as it looks very similar.
    They should have went with a threaded design which would not have had any patent issues.
    Just guessing but that seems like a reasonable explanation 🤣

    • @MiyagisRant
      @MiyagisRant  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, BassmanStrikes has tested it submersed in water for a long period, I would not use this underwater as the quality is not great in terms of seals. It does have the o ring inside but the problem is the adhesive used to glue the lens to the frame, it started to leak after a period of time in water. For regular use for protection on impact, scratches and light water splashes, no problems but not submersed. This issue was submitted to that company so let's see if they improved that. tbh, they really just needed a good marine silicone to glue that lens down.

      @@MiyagisRant okay. I recently took the pro on a vacation and used it in a pool off and on and had no issues with the stock lens. I think this whole non removable lens cover thing might turn into a scandal for insta360 😂

    • @MiyagisRant
      @MiyagisRant  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not sure why Insta360 would do that, there has to be a reason, I doubt it some money making scheme cause as the Chinese, they are well aware that it's inevitable that we will see after market replacement lenses and tbh the amount of people who actually break those lens guards is a very minut crowd, they aren't going to make millions with replacing lens guards, the amount of shipping, cost of the guards, labour. They would make more money selling those things at 1000% profit like the GoPro's or the DJI's. Oh well, we have one person doing it and we should start seeing more as time goes by with this camera. Now that said, I wonder if maybe that guy had the pre-test models which you could remove the lens guards.

    • @MiyagisRant
      @MiyagisRant  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Nope, this twist and lock design is almost identical to the GoPro, this is not rocket science and if you look close at the new lens guard, look at the circular part, there's an o-ring, there's your waterproofing there. If i was to finally replace mine, I would drop a couple of drops of silicone in the thread as backup. I use plumbers tape for my DJI lens guard lol never hurts to have the extra measure. Plus, the seal is fine enough for watersplashing, shallow seal, that seal will only be jeopardized when there is pressure as you go deeper. I use mine for diving exclusively and if I go beyond 5 feet deep, it goes into a dive housing, it's that simple.

    Regardless the fact is the lens cover is removable, if they can do it at a insta360 service center we can do it also of course it would be at our own risk even when the warranty runs out.
    You can easily replace the lens cover glass on a hero 8 now and that one is really designed to be non-removable where the glass is glued into a ridge that's molded into the chassis of the camera.
    I probably mentioned this before but my guess is they got into a patent issue with gopro and hence had to glue the lens protectors as the mechanism looks very similar to the gopro one, or it might be someone else that holds the patent and that's why we had 1 iteration of the hero line with "non" removable lens guard.

We also warned viewers that this is NOT a 'waterproof' alternative. The lens guard out of the package is perfectly fine for scratch, impact and water "resistant" use, you do know the difference between waterproof and water resistant right? Companies and/or authorized repair depots won't know that the lens guards were voluntarily removed by user. BassMan Strikes if you even watched his videos also said that the lens guards were held with two dabs of silicone adhesive and we've seen countless videos of people who dropped their Ace Pros and the lens guard actually came off, does that mean Insta360 will accuse you of removing that guard and won't give you the 1 year of free replacements? Doubtfully. There is no way for them to prove that it was removed voluntarily, it's a dead end argument and I've had my camera for 7 months and belong to the Ace Pro FB group where users have used this lens guard and yes, there has been 1 maybe 2 who had this lens adhesive issue but they were warned ahead of time and still used it underwater without a dive housing. Make sure you have your facts in order and you have proof of these 'Many" videos of this issue. Bassman Strikes and I were the first ones to discover this problem so you're barking up the wrong tree. Have a great day!

    Ahhhh did anyone see - 21 sec, no crack. 34 sec, crack in the bottom corner, 1:40 massive crack across the lens. It should have been made possible to swap lenses and ditched the idea of it being waterproof and just durable. It can survive being knocked a a little bit but not that!! 😉

      There are many 'action' cameras that don't have replaceable lens guards and remember, action cams didn't start out to have replaceable lens guards and yet we all survived lol I have 6 action cameras, some have and some don't have replaceable lens guards, I have yet to break one and I do a lot of sports. At least we now have an alternative for a replacement. If anyone is buying a camera JUST based on a simple thing like "replaceable" lens guard and over looking all other good, advanced features, then well, there's no point in trying to convince those people right? Need we forget, popular models like GoPro 8, DJI Action 2 did not have replaceable lens guards, were they crappy cameras? See, I knew it, there's a solution and yet, ppl will still bitch. I have a great idea, don't buy it then, it's really that simple but don't tell others not to simply because that one thing which btw, a large portion of people who use action cams don't actually use it in an action environment, that's just a fact. Have a good day ;)

      @@MiyagisRant ahhhhh, buts it’s not a solution - it broke the lens in the demo - you’ve made a solution for the only problem I had which was close focus. It’s was never a dealbreaker for me. I do wonder though, will Insta send one of these out with replacement glass instead of asking for it back for repairs, especially after 1 year or your warranty expires. Who gonna have the balls to test it’s waterproof ability now? Not me!! 🤣 Happy Christmas!! 🎄

      @@TakemesomewhereniceMCR Actually look closer to the video, the original lens had a small crack at the bottom right, when he got it open, later that original showed a larger crack on the top, now this could be a couple of things, either he switched to a another lens with a larger crack as an example, not sure why he would do that or as we know, once a lens is cracked, the whole screen becomes weak and can spread. My thought is, that with the force of the turn, he probably just made that already weak cracked screen worse. ie. did you ever crack one of those tempered glass protectors? noticed when you move or peel that protector off it gets worse. Here's the solution, when he put on the new lens guard and tightened it, it's perfectly fine, isn't that what this is about? Listen, when my warranty runs out and my lens guard breaks, you can bet I will use this and your worry of waterproofing, well, I will just use what Insta360 is using to glue that bugger down, some silicone will work as we've seen with other 3rd party lens repair kits, ie. GoPro 8. Also, I will definitely do a water seal test before I take this boy in salt water and most times when I go underwater it's in a water housing anyways. Have a great Christmas!

      I hear you. Still looks to me that the wrenchy thing broke it. I can see an insta lawsuit bubbling!! If I was showcasing a new product though I’d make sure I wasn’t using something that was broken and made worse by the very thing that was supposed help - but hey I’m a perfectionist, I can’t help it! 😂. • @MiyagisRant
      @MiyagisRant  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@bongpov476It was 'always' removable because pre-tested models sent out to reviewers just before launch, the lens guards were removeable like in the video. But for some reasons unknown, Insta360 decided to make it "unremovable" meaning that they probably just silicone resined it in I'm guessing. There's no way for them to reengineer the whole chasis with a fixed lens guard, the cost would be astronomical and there would be a launch delay. Plus, don't forget, Insta360 is offering FREE lens replacements, do you think they would do that if the lens guard was that hard to replace?? ;)

      It's totally removable you can tell just by looking at it as it has a uneven gap, while if you look at a gopro 8 it's designed from the start as not removable but even on that one you can easily replace the glass with a heat gun.
