New vans are too expensive and greed will kill the industry. Majority of people are not willing to pay inflated prices. Also there is a flood of 2nd hand vehicles availability..Add to this the cost of living as well as inflated campsite costs….you are right
To be fair, the industry has its hands tied from the base vehicle manufacturers. With the huge increases of those, it has pushed the price up hugely. There were people over inflating their prices in the last few years and now those used vans are worth far less than people think they are
I’ve taken the rear seats out of my Vito sport, bought double folding camp bed, tri fold mattress sturdy plastic boxes etc. I swap between work and leisure. I was planning to buy a van to convert but not now.
I heard a comment the other day ‘who would buy a Chinese camper van’. I guess the same people who are buying the UKs fastest selling car brand - MG - i.e pensioners. Maybe pensioners are not buying overpriced VWs but don’t rule out that they won’t buy something they perceive as better value.

I have no idea of the stats, but I know the older demographic, seemingly buy the less “tarted” up conversions. Opting for “more camper” The fact the base van isn’t far off a Transporter when it gets over here, in not sure how much better value it would be. Will certainly be interesting though and I’m keen to see how it all pans out.
That is indeed happening. It’s very difficult as the manufacturers require dealers to have certain numbers of models, in advance of the next year. Dealers had nothing to sell a few years ago and now they have too much. I hope things change and quickly. There are many fantastic people in the industry
I've been looking at the JDM conversions ( wellhouse ) as a way of having a general daily with the option of going away for a few days whenever. Taking account of the increased fuel costs as most are thirsty petrols they are sometimes 20K cheaper than the alternatives. Holding off in case the market dips even further and more economic diesels are then cost effective over the longer term.
Wellhouse is a place I need to go and see. The petrols sound better though, I would love a petrol van, but yes if fuel economy is a priority, then a petrol is probably not the best choice. Or is it? I will need to find out 😀
I have a T5.1 highline factory kombi, with a pop top and a slidepod system. Seats 5 & sleeps 5 ( @ a push), I tried selling it to fund a T6.1. Not a chance 😢
I can't afford a van myself at the moment, my plan is to invest in a few years when i retire. I'll also have more time to get the most out of the van then aswell. I wonder what the market will look like then?

Personally I think new van prices are ridiculously high , this I turn makes residual values high ! This isn’t sustainable and at last , I hope the market is finding its level. Great work 👍👍

What sort of price was it? Did you feel you got a good deal? I’m in the market for a van, lots about and use this advice to see where the market is. So much variation in price. 😊
You will enjoy it they are so versatile, can be parked in a normal parking bay either on the road or in a car park they fit under almost all height barriers, can be used as a second car etc. We always wild camp and have lots of weekends (and longer) away for no more than the cost of the fuel 👍🏻 if it hasn’t got a diesel heater I would recommend getting one it enables year round use.
I have owned my VW Camper King for almost 8 years and had a huge amount of use from it both camping and as a daily driver. If prices had remained sensible I would have traded it in for a newer model. However there is no way I can afford to spend another £30-40k upgrading it for something which is similar and does the same job. As such I will stick with this one for life and look after it. They can probably last 40 years I will just spend the money on maintenance

I literally bought a transit, I’m gunna insulate the rear and stick in a 3/4 bed that I won’t even bolt down, il lash it down, already slept a fair few nights in it, it works & it’s alright to be fair. Il sell it in 4 years and buy an older motor home as I think the same thing that happened in the mountain bike world is going to hit campers.
A lot of people are doing that. No conversion, just having somewhere to sleep and then removable cooking facilities etc. You can still visit the same wonderful places 😀
I been looking to buy a motorhome but the prices are very high, also this 3.550 weight restriction on a car license restriction means I need to stick to 6mtrs length. Coupled with the restrictions that local councils are preventing Motorhome’s parking in car parks, on verges in fact it’s becoming a big problem. Too many Motorhome’s and few places to go. It’s cheaper to use my money and go on holidays abroad. I think the motorhome and camper van industry will collapse. 😢

Yes that’s right. Haven’t actually seen one yet, but at less than £60k now that seems reasonable. It would be the residuals that would concern me, BUT I wouldn’t overlook it. There are several converters now building on Renault also

They were vans originally made by Leyland DAF. SAIC bought the rights around 2011 and relaunched the same vans with their branding. They haven't been around long under the new branding, hence you don't see old ones.
I did say “tend to have…” The new California doesn’t have a wet belt, nor do the current new T6.1’s, or the Mercs, Renaults. Also though neither does the hybrid or electric of the New Transporter or Transit
yeah, not hydrogen...the hydrogen tanks need to be replaced every 10 years... it'd be a depreciitaion niightmare... the tanks are incrediiblly expensive as they are rated for crash damage and such... the hydrogen fuel cell also has a limited life..... i'd put my money on solid state batteries making ev's a lot cheaper and more practical..
There are so many varying opinions on the subject, it’s going to be very interesting to see. I would like the future to be synthetic fuels and then barely anything needs to change and we can keep the same vehicles and infrastructure (to an extent)
When you have mediocre camp spots charging Air b&b prices. Combined with the oversaturation of parkups in UK where its virtually impossible to get a spot. So ive taken that £130k and bought myself a place in Spain that I earn the money when not there which then allows me to drive my car and stay in an Air b&b to any spot I want and in a lot more comfort.
It’s a changing landscape and one of the reasons I think the hybrids are going to sell well as more come onto the market. They are expensive though. Other than London, I think most zones are cities only, which means they aren’t affecting the majority of people having countryside/seaside breaks. Of course all that could change
Don't worry. Even if you stray into the odd emission zone, just pay it. It's a lot cheaper than spending an extra £20k or more just to get a compliant van. New vans are plagued with tech problems & engine management lights. Keep your older van well serviced & it'll see you right!

People will only accept so much loss , when trading in dealers have become greedy , iv decided not too upgrade for that reason ,dealers want it all there own way , my friend went round dealers with no trade in to buy a new camper and the dealers would not give a penny of the window price, so he walked away ,you can suck up and defend dealers all you want but they have done this too them self , as for e scare mongering about none factory campers iv had new campers from so called top end dealers with more problems than a home built camper , and had to go to court to get them fix problems , your chanel gives out false info and yes ford is cheaper than vw but will need tons of engine repairs , i know we run a fleet of transits and are now in the process of changing to man as we simply cant keep the fords on the road and its not small silly problems its engine replacement gear box replacement at up too 10 grand each we will never buy ford again you really need to get your facts right .

Where do i start, right here goes. Swift group have always over produced ,ALWAYS, and they are very aggressive in forcing dealers to take stock even when they haven't the finance or the capacity to take any more. In fact there are several dealers who have simply stopped selling New units ( Swift dealers) because swift are have been demanding the dealers take a smaller margin. More people are waiting to see what the budget is going to mean for them and also you hit on what's happening in the US ( worst RV sales for a decade) because we need to keep an eye on those things before spending fortunes on a new motor camper. Financially both China and the US are massively in debt and it's always the case when they catch a cold so do we, but many forecasters say they may catch the Flu. That said people's lifestyles are changing and to be fair the motorhome market has boomed and boomed BUT the bubble seems to be bursting. People are fed up with shoddy build quality and crap aftercare, the industry needs a massive radical shake up to survive and flourish. And all the uncertainty is not helping the industry and we're not even in recession, YET. If the aforementioned China and America do catch the flu the inevitable crash will decimate the industry and i fear a manufacturer will collapse and we'd start to see caravan sites slowly closing their gates.
