I take issue with Ms Meadows assertion that our current catalogue of extra solar planets leads to the conclusion that our system and/or our world are anomalies. We have surveyed 4000 worlds out of trillions in the galaxy, and our detection methods heavily favour finding worlds unlike our own. Let's hold off on the grand conclusions based on such preliminary and incomplete data.
Well, the current catalog does lead to that conclusion - that planets *like ours* are an anomaly, but that's not to say that we shouldn't keep looking, examining the planets we've found for further information or that life couldn't evolve on planets unlike ours. We can only base our conclusions on the evidence we've gathered thus far, and what we have so far shows that rocky planets on the inside, gas giants on the outside is pretty odd. Still, even if it's only one in a million or so, we've still got lots of potential candidates in the galaxy!
I went to a talk by Kevin Hand where he mentioned that whenever they pull up some weird new life form from the bottom of the ocean the first question people ask is "what do they taste like?" Based on that I'm pretty sure if we do discover alien life we WILL try to find them and eat them.
The question at 51:10 - he was referring to the paper by E.F. Borra, E. Trottier titled 'Discovery of peculiar periodic spectral modulations in a small fraction of solar type stars.' There was in fact a followup, refer to "The Breakthrough Listen Search for Intelligent Life: No Evidence of Claimed Periodic Spectral Modulations in High Resolution Optical Spectra of Nearby Stars."
Describing calling Tabby's star as rude or offensive is absurd. It was a good talk, I'm surprised there was even a single hand up on the thought that we are alone.
Two thoughts about your two thoughts. It seems to me there is a non-zero chance we are alone if by this point in our quest for extraterrestrial life we haven't found even one example. I agree about Tabby's Star. Dr Tarter may be correct that if a man had discovered the light fluctuations it might have remained KIC 8462852 instead of being named in Boyajian's honor, but it's an evocative name and probably did a lot to popularize SETI for those who were not already tuned in. I haven't read anything about Dr Boyajian taking offense about the name. I suspect that if a woman had asked the question, Dr Tarter would not have admonished her in the same way. Otoh, I was very happy to see a scientific panel discussion composed of women experts. That doesn't happen enough.
Here is a big realistic What If?....The basic premise of SETI if contact is made is that the civilization will be either equal or more advanced than our own, rooted in its inception under OZMA when Earth was only using radio for about 40 years. Now it is 2020, 60 years later and it is very possible that any civilization within 2 way lifetime contact is less advanced than humanity (30 LY/ 2 way convo taking 60 years). What are the protocols at SETI if say in 2032 we pick up the first ever long range broadcast from Tau Ceti which is 11 ly away and through our assessment we figure out that the civilization is where humanity was in 1940. Does SETI have a directive in place to make sure we are careful in our response if they are 70 years technically behind us? We worry about advanced beings destroying our society by contact......what about the other way around....I know there will be a temptation to tell them all about Earth and humanity but there is a risk it could be destructive to them. If SETI does not have protocols for this.....they should really think about creating one.
I hawe tryed to get info of a broadband reciver .. i got a 4m and a 2.5m Dish .. with Zenith / asimuth But the reciver .. a arrl TV dongel .. ain't the best SDR (Software Designed Radio) i Ewen build a extreem low noice fet pre Amp Fore the HELICAL RECIVER ANTENNA in the feed point ..

The continuous repetitive prosody when Meadows talks drives me nuts. Every sentence ends on an up-inflection. Aargh.
