For a video exploring the Arbiter's humanity, you completely neglect to mention the fact that bungie originally gave Arbiter a "holy" Muslim name, "darvesh" (درویش‎, or "dervish") until it was changed by a MS Market analyst supposedly due to concerns of a potential US-vs-Islam allegory. In Islam, a darvesh is a spitiual guide who helps others reach "God" and are characterized by their extreme poverty and abstinence from worldly pleasures, so personally, I'd say that name would have suited the character perfectly.

because ironically, he goes through a classical journey of character drama, changing his belief from the start of the story to the end; whereas Masterchief never did; he never goes through conflict of being genetically modified; never discover his dark past; never got angry of his childhood and normal life taken away forcibly by ONI, all of them is a disservice to him as human being and made him look life a blind follower of UNSC.

@@williampan29 I will choose to be reborn as a great Elite like the Arbiter over a generic, boring and soulless human anytime.
Is it that the Arbiter is a representation of what our human souls strive for?
Are we really happy or satisfied being pawns to a government like what master chief was?
The tale of the arbiter is an epic worth of myth and folklore.
The record of the chief is that of a tiny human with super powers that occasionally someone might remember as 117.

I feel like Arby really got shafted in Halo 3. His story was pushed aside in favour of Chief's and he basically just spent most of the game as a sidekick. The only time he got to shine was when we killed Truth and at the ending memorial. It would have been great if he had his own missions so we could see more of his character development. Instead he pretty much just followed Chief around 90% of the time giving commentary.

Versatile Lord You can play as the Arbiter in Halo 3, just in coop. Dialogue and cutscenes are altered a bit to justify his co-op presence. It’s pretty neat little details if you ask me, it made the campaign feel more like Chief & Arbiter’s final act against the Covenant rather than Chief alone.

I actually believe that Rtas was impressed with Arbiter's response to his assertion that Rtas's elites mattered more than Arbiter's life.
Less of a scoff, and more of a "hm". Considering what we know of both personalities, it makes more sense for Rtas to still have a modicum of respect for the Arbiter. I have always admired Arbiter's way with words, and I believe that moment is a great example of that.
I mean, c'mon. "These are my elites. Their lives matter to me, yours does not."
    "That makes two of us."
A simple sentence, but it carries so much weight. Arbiter is implying that he too puts other lives before his own. That he would lay down his own life for Rtas's elites, as his life means little to him.

    • @DeepRoot_
      @DeepRoot_ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +144

Thel 'Vadam.... what can I say? It may sound corny but there are two people I wish I could be like in this world: My Father and the Arbiter. I was blind and obediant as a youth, always following my abusive mother's orders or the commands of others. I was damn good at being the stooge, but as I grew up and played Halo 2 I noticed parallels. I felt connected to Thel. Sure Chief is cool and All, but the Arbiter? Good Lord I would follow his story for all eternity. To this very day I do what I can to have his modern morals and abilities. I carry him as a moral compass. To me Thel 'Vadam is a true hero. I eagerly await your future videos Taras.

Then one of them committed "heresy." Challenged the Profits. The Profits manipulated the Arbiter of old and all of Sanghelios. That's how I see it. Through a bit of research of my own, it's been said that the Arbiter's story parallels the apostle Paul. Before Paul literally "saw the light," (God let out a light that blinded him for a few days) he murdered countless Christians as Saul. He wandered around aimlessly temporarily blinded. When he finally came to his life completely was turned around because of his knowledge of the truth.

I think he gave Tartarus a choice because just like how Arbiter slaughter billions of humans out of blind loyalty, Tartarus slaughtered millions of Elites because of the same idea. In fact Tartarus' was even more blind to the prophets because he hated how the Brutes were always treated as cannon fodder (look at Atriox). Tartarus sought only to improve the lives of Brutes, thus becoming an ultra loyalist to the prophets.
Tartarus wasn't evil, just brainwashed. Arbiter was in the exact same position as he, so instead of fighting him, Arbiter tried enlightening him. Arbiter and the Elites were far from innocent and were guilty of the same crime that the Brutes committed against the Elites, yet Arbiter acknowledges this humbly and is even more evident with his talk with Lord Hood.

I never really made sense of the hate towards him when Halo 2 came out. When I picked up Halo 2 near launch, and first played the Arbiter's first mission, I thought it was awesome. I remember seeing Halo CE on PC with "playable" Elites and I thought it was awesome, so when Halo 2 let us do that on Xbox it was great.
We still got to shoot Aliens. And I never saw the appeal of the Chief with Combat Evolved. In fact, it was only until Halo 4 came out that I enjoyed his character in the game. I enjoyed him more so in the books rather than the games. So having a different character with a perspective on the Covenant (rather than "They are the bad guys shoot them").

So am I, Arbiter as a character is a part of the game. For the reception, the critics sure for what it means. The game stills has 95% on metacritic. But from a player perspective there was room for disappointment (very linear, bad level design, unbalanced and insulting cliffhanger).
I Always found the arbiter cool, but from a story telling and gameplay perspective he's useless in the game. Without mentionning the fact that everyone bought the game to defend earth as the masterchief. Everything the arbited uncovers about the covenant could be sum up in a cutscene.
There is a Reason why Arbiter is not playable in Halo 3 :)

    • @SirBigWater

@@sergeb8h388 Arbiter is playable in coop, even showing up in some cutscenes he wouldn't otherwise if you were playing solo. Everyoneely did not buy the game just for Earth levels. Xbox live launched in 2002, a year after the console came out, so Halo 2 was the multiplayer game to play back then online. Especially for a console shooter. And then there is the fact that this was 2004, where console shooters were creeping up, but PC was still the place to go. Halo had nice controls and mechanics and design. I would say that the rushed development definitely was a problem, especially with the E3 demo hyping people for something they didn't get. But it was and still is a very enjoyable game for many people.

Don't get me wrong, i love Halo 2 - its gameplay is the best of the 3 originals. It's aging pretty well for that matter : better than Halo CE & 3 in my opinion.
Arbiter was representative of a lot of problems (and marketing lies, not only the E3 demo but again the emphasis on fighting for earth) the game had.
It's why ton of people hated him. Well, it's what i remember. We all hated the SP of Halo 2, some of my friends were saying Halo is dead blabla, first time but not last i will hear that in my life ;)
On the other hand multiplayer is a different topic.

I planned on commenting on several videos and always put it off because I felt like there was so much I wanted to say. I've been extremely unpopular and bullied throughout life and deal with a lot of suicidal thoughts and mental breakdowns. Also I was a VERY devoted, zealous Christian until I was 20 and my world shattered for a while when I lost my faith. It also made me empathize with the Arbiter's story a lot. You picked up a lot of cool details in Halo 2's story I hadn't noticed. I always saw a lot of parallel's between his story and Jesus', even if kind of reversed in the outcome. Looking forward to more. Keep it up, man.

If you think about it: After Halo 2 was released, Bungie, makes the game's universe more of a commentary on Religion. After seeing 9/11 and the war spurred by religious fanatics, that's what Halo is about and possibly the inspiration behind it.
Arbiter is like Sangheili's Master Chief, he is a Demon as well. He finds the light by not following blindly, just like Master Chief does.
So, the simiplist message is: If you follow blindly, you will find darkness.

I must say that considering Halo 2's plot is split between the perspectives of the Master Chief and the perspective of the Arbiter, Bungie did an amazing job of giving this newly introduced character this great redemption story. I mean we're talking about half the campaign of a first person shooter here. In 6 missions, they managed to tell this so well. I'm kinda glad that the Chief did not have any sort of foucs of his own during that plot. He's doing his own thing, but he does not take away the spotlight for the Arbiter. Arguably something that in this well executed manor, makes the campaign one of the best of the genre. I don't quiet understand why the Arbiter was so disliked in the past when the game came out. I don't really get it considering how things are being seen today when it comes to Halo 2. Maybe some people hated the idea of playing as an Elite. Or felt like the Chief did not get enough focus in the plot, which like I said, he really didn't. He was there for the second half of the game, but had no progress of his own. Who knows...
What I would love to see though coming from 343 is giving him more attention in the future. Not just by being a Cameo character that shows up for two missions, but maybe give him a game that makes him the one and only protagonist? I know I would be up for such a spin off. See him on the Sangheili home world ,trying to finally create peace with his people while fighting off former Covenant Loyalists. Extending his story, his goals in life and reasons to be there. I would love that.

A signficant amount of "wise" people (depending on the subject) who have attained a vast quantity of knowledge become narrowminded. This is due to them having so much knowledge that they start to no longer learn or accept other possbilties. (Why would they? If they think they know too much?)
They always question other beleifs, but they never confront their own beleifs. They turn into the very things they said they casted aside.

And later when Arbiter shows compassion for everyone by letting them escape, he is visually surprised and realizes that what the arbiter said was in affirmation to him. He knew he was worthless, but not the Covenant soldiers on his ship. They had value to him as well.

Excellent video. I'm a huge fan of the Sangheili, and particularly H2's characterization of the Arbiter and his species. He's arguably one of the most fleshed out and dynamic characters in the franchise, and you did a great job of telling his story with a lot of insight that I'm afraid some fans didn't quite grasp.
One thing that I think you might have missed: the Shipmaster at 8:30 isn't some nameless elite; he's Rtas Vadumee, Thel Vadamee's long time friend from an allied clan. He wasn't just talking down to a disgraced stranger, he was admonishing his friend and brother for a failure that the Arbiter readily owns up to. In fact, the subtitles from the scene say *huff of respect* when the Arbiter responds "Nothing ever will [hide the mark of shame]." He doesn't see the Arbiter's remark as pathetic; he respects him for owning his failure.
Other than that, this video rocks. Keep up the good work.

I feel you man my parents have been forcing me to go to church but as i study the bible and compare it to the books of the church...there's so many contradictions that its hard to even believe the church anymore sometimes i just go because my mom tells me too...the church even claims it has a prophet still but in the bible it said that after Jesus there would be no more prophets...i honestly know how you feel and i hope you find the truth! This is why i love halo so much it seems so unrelatable at first but once you get to know the story you find out you're not so different from chief or the arbiter.

The bible does not contradict itself. People either fail to grasp what it says fully and try and fill in the gaps to their best understanding. But the bible is clear on its dos and donts. It is people who distort it

      @@Everydayartist12 No contradictions?
Tell me then, how did Judas "fall headlong" when his head was tied to a tree? Did he buy the field then off himself, or did the priests buy the field from the farmer with the money Judas threw back at them after Judas had offed himself? (Matthew 27 and Acts 1)
Was Moses meek above all who were upon the face of the Earth as Numbers 12 claims, or was he a vindictive and bloody theocratic warlord as the rest of the book makes him out to be?
Is God NOT the author of confusion, as claimed in 1 Corinthians 14, or did Paul not read about the Tower of Babel, or forget what he just wrote in 1 Corinthians 1?
Is God omniscient as the Bible claims, even though there are plenty of examples throughout the Bible where God doesn't know what's going on, so he has to go down and look for himself, or ask the guy where he's been?
Were the Hebrews slaves in Egypt for 400 or 430 years?
Did God kill all the cattle during the fifth plague, or did he save some for the seventh plague, or did he save some MORE for the tenth plague, even though they should have been wiped out by the first two as described?
Was Lot a righteous man even though he offered his daughters to a violent mob to be gang raped?
Is God warlike, as described in the OT, or peaceful, as described in the NT?
Should non-believers such as myself be executed by stoning as described in Deuteronomy 13, shunned as in 2 Corinthians 6, or loved though I am your enemy as in Matthew 5 and Luke 6?
Is it okay to test God? Judges and Kings seems to be okay with it, but Deuteronomy, Matthew and Luke condemn it.
How many foreskins did David buy his wife with? Was it 100 in 2 Samuel 3, or 200 as in 1 Samuel 18?
Did Elisha obtain Elijah's mantle before or after Elijah ascended into heaven in the chariot of fire?
Did King Josiah die in bed as promised in 2 Kings 22, in battle in 2 Kings 23, or of his wounds after his servants brought him back to Jerusalem in 2 Chronicles 35?
How high were the chapiters of the Temple? Jeremiah 52 says five cubits, and 2 Kings 25 says three cubits.
Who cast Jonah into the sea? The sailors or God? (Jonah 1, and 2)
Was Jesus born during the reign of Herod the Great, who died in 4 BCE, or during the Governance of Quirinius after 6 CE after Herod had been dead for 9 years?
Did Joseph and Mary flee to Egypt or wait the 40 days for Mary's purification then go to Nazareth?
Was Jesus' paternal grandfather Jacob or Heli? What did it matter if Jesus wasn't even of Joseph's blood, and thus not descended from King David by either paternal lineage?
Was Jesus' first sermon on a mountain as in Matthew 5, or on a great plain as in Luke 6?
Between Matthew 19, Mark 10, and Luke 18, what was the 6th of the Commandments Jesus listed?
Was Jesus taken first to Ciaphas, as in the Synoptic Gospels, or to Annas as in John?
How many women came to the sepulchre? Was it one in John 20, two in Matthew 28, three in Mark 16, more than three in Luke 24?
After his resurrection, did Jesus tell his disciples to go to Galilee or Jerusalem? And where did he subsequently meet them?
Who did Jesus first appear to after his resurrection? One Mary (Matthew 28), two Marys (Mark 16 and John 20), Cleopas (Luke 24), or Cephas (1 Corinthians 15)?
Was Jesus crucified at noon the day before Passover in John 18-19, or mid-morning the day AFTER Passover in Mark 14-15?
Does God cause non-belief as in John 12 and 2 Thessalonians 2, or Satan as in 2 Corinthians 4?
Who lied in Genesis 3? The Serpent, or God? Actually, that's not really a contradiction in and of itself - just to see if you're paying attention.
Who does the Bible claim to be God's "firstborn son?" Israel in Exodus 4, Ephraim in Jeremiah 31, or Jesus in Romans 8 and Colossians 1?
Need I go on, or have I made my point?

I have never played a HALO game (PlayStation and now PC newb!) but I have followed the lore and being fascinated by it since I was a kid in Nigeria. When I used to watch videos about Arbiter, I was always hooked because I loved the dynamic he and Master Chief had. I also was dumbfounded as to why most gamers complained about having to play as him in Halo 2.

If only Bungie didn't listened to the whining of the xenophobic crybabies and kept the Arbiter missions in Halo 3 and also made N'tho and Usze part of the story. While i'm at it, a few other things that would've made Halo 3 a LOT better would be an option to choose which of the four player characters to play as in single player, kept in firefight, NOT kill off Johnson and Miranda, make the needler and energy swords dual wieldable, and have Gravemind be the final boss instead of Guilty Spark.
