  • Hydration drink mixes are a great way not only to take in electrolytes but also calories while on the run. But while there are some obvious benefits to powdered drink mixes, there are also some potential drawbacks.

Great video and the best advice here (for me) is to have one flask with drink mix and another with Water. There are key times in a long run/race where you just want good old plain water and that desire can be so powerful. The stone cold pro tip (which you have said in the past) is to always have the Solomon flask with filter on it. On a 30 degree day - dunking your hat in a mountain stream followed up with an ice cold filtered flask filled right from the mountain stream.....oh baby, I can taste it right now:) I'm not religious but if that feeling was what a religion was promising upon the end, I would join:) Great video as always

I do a bottle of mix and a bottle of water by default, but almost by accident, just because one flask is the old Salomon design with the narrow mouth.
Little pre-portioned bags is a tip I’ve adopted from you though, that’s a great one.

In my first big race I had individual packets in my drop bags with a pair of scissors, what a hassle to open the packet and fill at each stop. Now I just take a Salt Stick electrolyte pill every hour and drink whatever the aid station has, I'm not picky anymore! Great video Jeff...

Great vid. I rotate between Skratch, Tailwind, and Roctane. I typically cut the serving in half so it’s not overkill. The tradeoff is at an AS - especially when you’re solo. It’s like, “Ok, just pour half the packet.” Takes forever! In the future, will def keep pre-made flasks in drop bags.

Energy powder with protein is a game changer as it doesn't upset my stomach like pure carbs or gels.

After several races with issues, I’ve moved to solid food and plain water, with some salt electrolytes thrown in for good measure. I have found the Naak products really help, give me energy and also help take away the ‘empty’ feeling I’d get with just the mixture I used to use.

Great video ! Time spent mixing the drinks is non negligeable ! but having one of your 2 flasks ready with them after an aid station really helps getting in enough calories on the long run. Pro tip, make sure you do not double caffeinate yourself with caffeinated drink mix + gels, you'll bonk, then shit yourself :D

On really hot races I like to freeze a bottle of electrolytes in my drop bag and let it thaw by the time I get there. Nice to look forward to a really cold change of flavour after warm flasks all day.

Just an FYI for when carrying tablets during a run, using a bag (like in the video) is a better option than the plastic tube they normally come in. The tablets in the tube will rattle around making an annoying sound but more importantly, the constant rattling starts to break the tablets. I’ve finished runs where it felt like I had more tablet powder than whole tablet left.

I find the drink mix electrolytes cause me flavour fatigue in the events longer than 50k so this year I changed my whole fueling strategy and it’s working well, in Australia we have a product called Sodii, it’s sugar free and 1000mg of sodium per serve, I’ll have it in one flask which I’ll drink over the course of 2 hours, I’ll also take 2 salt tabs on the hour which are 250mg each, so I’m taking 1000mg per hour as I’m a heavy and salty sweater, my carbs are gels and chews by precision hydration plus coke and solid food at aid stations, no more flavour fatigue so far although my 100k in May will be the true indicator 🙏🏼

@@jseales86you can do sweat tests under different conditions to give you an idea of how much you lose. Weight yourself before and after the run.

@@jseales86 Recently I heard a scientist speak about intense exercise requiring a minimum of 450ml of water per hour, I use to try and consume 1000ml per hour and either struggled or would run out of water between aid stations, my goal is now to consume at least 500ml per hour, I’ve also started using my 1.5l bladder so I now start with a total 2500ml or 5 hours of water, I can walk 20km in 5 hours so no more running out of water 🙏🏼 It’s very hot in Australia at the moment and I can find myself running in weather as hot as 38 degrees Celsius and haven’t felt dehydrated and pee regularly during runs, so promising signs so far 👍🏼

I totally agree on testing stuff before going on a serious hike/run. Found a new fruit bar that tastes like fruit leather. I immediant thought about being on a mountain, miles away from the car, hungry and hot and seeing if it would still taste good. Decided I should try it on a less dangerous flat hike this spring.

Thanks Jeff, such an insightful vid and I will take your point on bringing additional salt for hot weather. I haven't quite found the best sized baggie yet. What sizes of baggies are you and everyone else here in the comment section using?

Just wanted to add that I missed the little sponsorship disclosure for Skratch like you did (and do consistently, thumbs up) for Naak. I found myself considering purchasing Skratch superfuel without knowing you're sponsored after watching the video the first time.

i was researching this yesterday, electrolyte mixes that also serve as caloric/carb intake. I've been used to tailwind or skratch, however, I've recently ran out of what stock i had. It seems like naak, tailwind, skratch, gnarly, and some gatorade pod product, and probably some maurten product as well fall into this category. There isnt much written solely about this class of products.
