Growing up in Beverly, MA, my mother used to take my little brother and me to Woolworth's. He was a baby and I was 3 when this began. We walked there. Often we would enjoy lunch at the counter while the little guy would nap. We split a tuna sandwich, I remember. I'm guessing we didn't use those wonderful baskets though in the early 50's. I think I would have remembered.
I'm sure others have shared, but yes, of course, I grew up in the late 1950s and 1960s, and F. W. Woolworth had several stores in Albany, NY, both in more downtown areas along with one of the very first shopping centers where we often shopped. All kinds of fun stuff for kids as well as families, etc. We also had W. T. Grant stores, that were similar "five-and-dime" style department stores. Unrelated, I also loving pi tcking up Liberty Blue dinner plates with Independence Hall (originally produced in conjunction with the American Bicentennial celebration in 1976 - I remember that event, too...lol). They dinner plates always sell for me. I also love bringing out my little fruit bowl depicting Betsy Ross sewing the first American flag as part of my decor for July 4th each year!
Yes, there was one in the old Trumbull shopping mall in Trumbull ct in the 80’s , there was an up stairs and down stairs and a dinner . I used love to get my lip gloss there
I have frequented Woolworths on many occasions - we had a Woolworths store in our indoor mall (Regency Square) - I have had that basket over my arm on many a shopping trip 🙂 on another note - I have just purchased a couroc tray from your Ebay shop - first purchase - so excited - can't wait for it to get here - thank you
I’m in my late 70’s. There were a couple of Woolworths where I lived in upstate NY. We always referred to Woolworths as the Five & Dime. I remember shopping there with my Mom when I was little. After shopping we would sometimes sit at their counter and order lunch. As a teenager my friends and I would go there for fries and a soda. Fond memories🙂! I think the stores closed by the early 70s.
The author of the book “The Cheery Scarecrow “ Johnny Gruelle created Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls. You picked up a lot of nice things. This was another great video. I look forward to the next.
I grew up north of Denver. Woolworth's was the Five & Dime to go to in the 50's, 60's & early '70's. There was Ben Franklin's & Kresge's , too. In the early 60's Woolworth's opened Woolco. The competition was K-Mart. Later the competition was also Target & WalMart.
Hi Kris, Love the story of the Woolworth sign, lol. Yes, as a matter of fact, there was a Woolworths, complete with lunch counter, in Berlin! If memory serves me correctly, it was at the site of present day Ocean State, but to the left, where the open (fenced) area is now. By the way, love the toile tray! Have a great day! Deb
I remember Woolworths 5 and 10 in Haverhill, MA (mostly the lunch counter for a lime rickey!). Such wonderful memories shopping with Mom. The building was beautiful with a rounded brick corner and sat next to the Merrimack River. They closed in 1968 when I was 10. Unfortunately, the building was eventually razed. Google for pictures!
Yes, I remember going in Woolworths when I was a little girl. I remember they had a lunch counter. It seems my memories always include food. LOL I live in Springfield MO. I have several good memories of Woolworths. Good video. I always look forward to your videos. Hi to Licorice, Wilson, Iris and Indy.
Haha! My memories often involve food too - you're in good company! I'm so glad you have happy memories of Woolworths. I'll give my fur babies your regards! 💕💕
I really enjoyed your video! I would have loved to see a video of your husband bargaining for the basket stand! I am 69 years & grew up in Winston-Salem, NC. There was a Woolworths in a shopping center & downtown. I loved shopping there. The diner counter was wonderful! This February I went to Canberra, New South Wales, in Australia. They have Woolworths Grocery stores that is the same company.
Our Woolworth’s had oiled wooden floors. The smell of nuts cooking was fabulous! I would buy Christmas gifts for my friends for 50 cents…or a dollar at most. The grilled cheese sandwiches at the lunch counter were delicious. Wonderful memories of a great store in Lynchburg, VA!
I loved this video. It brought back so many memories. I used to have a piece of basket like that one and would use it to carry one of my delicious pies. My mom was a great pie baker and after she passed I received her talent for baking pies. Woolworth was my favorite store as a child. We bought many things there. My mom bought cute little dresses, underwear, earrings, watches, and toys. They also sold parakeets, canaries, and goldfish and I bought my first canary there when I was a little girl. Woolworth also had a lunch counter with swivel stools and we would often get a snack there usually a milkshake or other treat. I do vaguely remember those shopping baskets. We shopped in a small town in California with the stores and bank all up and down on the main boulevard. Woolworth and J.C. Penny were on opposite corners and we bought almost everything from those two stores. I loved seeing the tablecloth on your table it looked beautiful. I love that Lenox pine cone pattern and have considered collecting it. Great to see Wilson.
❤ Chris loved loved. Love your trip to bacon falls and you're old. Buddy Jim, I love the Wolverine baskets. And yes, I'm a little older than you. I remember eating at the counter. In wall wars. In Massachusetts where I grew up before I went to nursing school. And I remember I think eating egg salad sandwiches or grilled cheese and it was very, very reasonable and it was like maroon. Burgundy seat covers and the stools at the counter. They did have a couple of booths and it was wonderful. You could shop and eat. Lots of fun. You got yourself some gorgeous items. I'm gonna have to look at your eBay store. I'm thinking now that I'm oldermy daughter got married later in life. They just had their second baby. So my idea is to now. She loves antiques. O, I've taken her for years and I lived right over the hill from Broomfield mass. So we went to that until I couldn't manage all the walking. I mean to see it all. You know, you have to spend a couple of days but anyhow. I got several pieces from thinking now that instead of buying new products or. Or mass-produced items that I will give her gifts of old for upcoming birthdays and Christmas and her husband loves old books. So I may even be able to find things for the 2 children who knows. Thank you for sharing this video. Your husband has very good taste as to you and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Take care and be safe and warm❤❤
Hi Chris I enjoy your videos greatly. Woolworths was the best 5 and dime store ever. They always had a great holiday section too. I was lucky to go many times at their flagship store in Manhattan on 34th street. Sadly they are no more. They were sandwiched in between Gimbals and Macy’s. I think TH-cam has some videos of the old store during the holidays. I live in CT now, no more stores like that here 32:06 anymore. Be safe and well. God bless. Will 🧸
Oh Chris! those torch design sconces are GORGEOUS! I am in love with them...I don't blame you one bit for keeping those beauties!😍 I also think the print you bought for Thanksgiving decor was a wonderful unique piece👍 ❤❤❤
What great things you found! I especially love those sconces - they’re pretty amazing. I also love the quirky pilgrim picture. I would definitely use it in my Thanksgiving display! Woolworth’s!! I think you’re too young to have gone there! It was a great place for a little girl (me) to spend my 50 cent allowance in the 1950s. That Woolworth piece is fabulous- good for Eric the newest American Picker!
Also Chris, saw a documentary on Woolworths and it is still around. Only now it is Foot Locker ! Thet technically never went insolvent, only rebranded to Foot Locker ! Amazing !
I have foggy memories of Woolworth's when I was a little girl in the 80's. My grandmother took me there to get school supplies one year, at where I think was the Greenwich, CT location. I remember street parking. I remember that iconic lunch counter, too! Love that Eric found those shopping baskets! Love your channel and watching you go on your thrifting adventures around our state and beyond.
Foggy memories are better than no memories at all, right? I wish I could go back in time and see the lunch counter! Eric was so happy with his find. I'm so glad you enjoy the channel!
I really enjoy your TH-cam videos. I lived in CT most of my life in Bristol, CT. I love visiting the different places in CT where you thrift. I will keep some of them in mind when I visit CT. I do remember Woolworth as a kid in Bristol, CT.
Hi Kris! What a great video. Thanks for taking us along. The tag sale looked great. That store was fantastic. So many items but you could see them all. Love the pinecone plates and the Woolworth baskets and stand. I do remember going there when I was young and spinning on the stools at the counter!
I love the pilgrim picture! If you ever want to sell it…my husband’s family are Mayflower descendants. I would totally use this for Thanksgiving decor. I also loved the first sale you featured. Those old boxes are great to use for crafting, especially assemblage.
I'm so glad you love the picture! I'm really enjoying it, but I'll let you know if I ever decide to sell. I has such an interesting and unique look about it.
I am70 and grew up in Waterbury . I used to get the city bus at Woolworths to go home from Wilby High school. Used to shop in there all the time. Remember when I was little, they used to sell little turtles with flower painted shells and my mom bought me one !
Oh yes, I remember Woolworth. I’m glad your husband found himself a neat piece of the past, those metal baskets lasted for years. I love the Lenox Pine Cone Plates, I have never seen that pattern before
Eric was SO EXCITED about this find! Apparently the Lenox pine cone pattern was made for about 20 years, but this was my first time seeing them too! So beautiful!
I think I will miss you again in this wonderful sale: Nov 9: Jack frost Bazaar in the Niantic Community Church sales. Go early with recycle bags, because it is very popular. There is luncheon that you must order ahead. If you have more hours, head into Route 85 heading towards Hartford, where you will come across The Dinosaur Place Antique store (many little store int the store) and also two other stores, The two sister trading post and another one round the corner (pls ask the two sisters cos I forget the name). A lot to see.
My mom and grandma used to take me to Woolworths in Mohawk Mall in Schenectady and I would get the clam fry and their little restaurant and I think it was like $1.25 and there was also a Woolworths near our house in New York and it had the old-fashioned counter and we would get coffee and what not there
Woolworth's was a great 5 and dime store that my best friend and I frequented in the mid 60's when we were teenagers. They sold all kinds of things like socks, home goods and Beatle albums! After shopping many of the downtown stores, we'd relax at the lunch counter they had and have the best lime rickeys ,a refreshing lime drink. They had decent food all reasonably priced. Enjoying your videos.
We had a woolworths in torrington! I remember having lunch with my mom when i was young! Grilled cheese all the way! They had so much to offer! Love all your finds! Love the pinecone dishes too!
So I was born in the early 50's and lived about a mile from a Woolworth's. My sister and I walked there frequently when we were young. I could buy supplies for my embroidery, doll clothes for my Ginny dolls, and all sorts of things. It was like a small department store. My favorite memory is of their luncheonette counter where we would get banana splits. There were inflated balloons all around above the counter and you would pick one, which would be popped, and the little piece of folded paper inside would give you the price you would pay for your banana split - as low as one penny! Oh, the anticipation!!
Wow! It sounds like you had some fun times at Woolworths! (AND you just made me want to have a banana split!) I love the idea of messages in balloons. Thanks for sharing!
The milk can could also be a passive cream separator, left to settle, the cream rose to the top and you could drain the milk and in the glass "window" you tell when the cream could be drained
I think you're exactly right - I started to do a bit of research and couldn't find much, but cream separator came up. The info you just gave me is more detailed and helpful than anything I read, so I appreciate it!
I really enjoyed this video! I loved your weird picture that you are keeping for yourself! I did visit Woolworths in my hometown of Bayonne N.J often when I was young.
The tag sale had so much good stuff! I especially loved the 1930s green pottery piece. Also, the framed handstitched oranges piece is just beautiful! I'll never make it to your part of the US which make your videos extra enjoyable from the scenery to the items that shops have!
@WorthingtonHome Thanks for asking! We're in Kentucky. It's a beautiful state! I've traveled within the US, but never to any of the New England states. It's a beautiful part of our country and there's so much history. Today, I went to southern Ohio for some antique shopping with a sister and niece. There was some sticker shock, but we managed to find a few bargains that we couldn't leave behind.
I am 17 years older than you are, and when my sister and I were little, it was my dad who brought us to the doctor for our checkups. If we got a shot (vaccination), he would give us each $1 and take us to Woolworth in Plainfield NJ to buy a toy. Those visits were so much fun, despite the trauma of shots! I remember there was a lunch counter with balloons hung on the wall. You could pick a balloon and they would pop it and whatever price was inside was the price you paid for an ice cream sundae or banana split
I just looked on line and they said the last Woolworth store closed in 1997. I don’t remember them that late. By then we had Newberry’s which was similar. We use to call it the Dime store. Now Dollar General, Dollar Tree and Family Dollar seem to be the old Dime Store except it’s not a dime anymore.
No, definitely not a dime anymore, and those stores don't have lunch counters or any of the other fun things that seemed to be at Woolworths back in the day. Was Newberry's in Massachusetts?
I remember going to Woolworths when I was little. I remember being confused because I thought the name...Woolworths...meant that they just sold knitting wool. 😎
It's not! I'll try to find a comparable price and I'll get back to you. Would you mind sending me an email so I can contact you that way? I'm Klindsay1388@gmail.com
Great finds from that estate sale! Looks like you got some nice things for your booth too. Would you share the new address for Corner Collective please? I looked it up but I’m only seeing the old Terryville location. Thank you hope you have a great week ❤
I should have shared the address in my video - silly me! It's 246 Terryville Road in Bristol. It's just down the street from where it was before. I think the building used to be a car dealership or similar. If you go, be sure to tell Jim I said hello!
I'd like to send you a short note regarding Woolworths do you have a postal box to where I can mail it? I remember a lot about Woolworth as it was a favorite teen spot to shop. Love those Lenox pine cone plates have never seen that pattern before. You have great videos -especially appreciate the close-ups on your dinning room table.
I keep meaning to set up a postal box - I have the application form and everything! If you send me an email, I can tell you more: Klindsay1388@gmail.com
❤ MY MAMA AND I WENT TO WOOLWORTH DIME STORE OFTEN....AND PURCHASED THINGS OFTEN....I DO NOT RECALL MAMA TAKING A BASKET, PERHAPS BECAUSE WE WOULD NOT BE BUYING TOO MUCH....THE STORE WE SHOPPED IN WAS IN WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.....THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN 1960 ETC
I'm so glad you see it that way! I thought the poses and expressions were very unusual - like something you would see in a silent movie. But that's part of why I liked it so much!
I remember the lunch counter at Woolworths as well as Christmas decorations as a child. The store was downtown Oakland on Broadway in California
I love it! I bet the Christmas decorations were amazing! Thanks for sharing!

Fantastic episode as always ! The Lenox pinecone plates are all that !!! Thank you for finding the best treasures .

I love your channel! ❤
I remember Woolworth’s when I was a little kid in Buffalo, but I don’t remember the baskets. It is very cool 🤩
I grew up in Southwest Florida and we had a Woolworth’s at our local mall. I remember getting some shoes with my dad back in the late 60’s.
I never imagined a Woolworths in a mall - I always thought of them as stand alone stores. That's so interesting! Thanks for sharing!
Hi Kris,
Love the story of the Woolworth sign, lol.
Yes, as a matter of fact, there was a Woolworths, complete with lunch counter, in Berlin! If memory serves me correctly, it was at the site of present day Ocean State, but to the left, where the open (fenced) area is now.
By the way, love the toile tray!
Have a great day!

Ye, I went to the one in Norwich CT . I remember the baskets.. So sad when it was closed. It had creaky wood floors and a great lunch counter.

I love your memories - they really bring Woolworths to life for me! (Canaries!!!) Thank you for sharing! 💕💕💕💕
I grew up in Norwalk, CT and we didn’t have a Woolworths but we did have “Greens”, which had the same selection of things and a lunch counter!
I never heard of Greens! That's new information for me!
I'm so glad to hear the Corner Collective has reopened! Another place I can easily take my mom when I visit her in Terryville 😊
Thanks Chris, love that shop! Very special Jim remembered you and your credit 👍💜

I LOVE pine cone design dishes. I have several, kinda mix n match. I have never seen the Lenox set. It is gorgeous.
We're kindred spirits! The Lenox pattern was made for about 20 years (50s - 70s), according to my research.

I believe Woolworths stores were around yet into early 1970’s. Many in the Midwest. You always find the neatest things.
I'm so glad you enjoyed my finds! I think Eric gets the prize for best purchase of the day!
My mom and gmom used to go to Woolworths and even ate at their luncheon counter! I have great memories!
Thank you for sharing your memories! The luncheon counter must have been so much fun!
That sounds like so much fun! (Not the shot part, obviously). Such happy memories! Thanks for sharing!
Used to eat lunch when a child at the San Francisco Woolworth’s.
I love it! Thanks for sharing!
I remember going to Woolworths when I was little. I remember being confused because I thought the name...Woolworths...meant that they just sold knitting wool. 😎
That's HYSTERICAL! And so LOGICAL! I love it! 😂😂
Hi Kris- I would love to purchase the orange crewel if it’s not yet claimed 🤗
It's not! I'll try to find a comparable price and I'll get back to you. Would you mind sending me an email so I can contact you that way? I'm Klindsay1388@gmail.com
Please tell me you have been to Collinsville Antiques! It’s fabulous!
@@WorthingtonHome Thank you 🙂
I'd like to send you a short note regarding Woolworths do you have a postal box to where I can mail it?
Thank you for sharing your memories! I love it!
🤩
I love both of the needlepoint pictures. Are they for sale?
Yes! I can find some comparable prices and get back to you. Would you mind emailing me so I can easily get back to you? I'm Klindsay1388@gmail.com
Oh
I always enjoy your videos but was a bit bewildered when you called the Pilgrim art “weird”. It’s old, unique and beautiful. !
I'm so glad you see it that way! I thought the poses and expressions were very unusual - like something you would see in a silent movie. But that's part of why I liked it so much!
where is your store located?
That was actually Terryville not Torrington
Sorry Kris I managed to find that address so never mind. 🤪
