Here’s a major loophole in the 360’s security that greatly benefits Xenia: the _console_ determines whether an XBLA game is a demo or the full version, not the game itself. When you download an XBLA demo, it actually downloads the full game, and your system decides it should load the demo when you open it. That means you can download all the demos for all the XBLA games you want, copy them to your PC, and Xenia will see those demos as the full games. I’d hesitate to call this piracy because the system is designed to let you do that.

In that same config, for games that CTD or freeze on boot, change the GPU render API from Auto to Vulkan; or try Xenia Canary (forked version with new features for games that don't work in Xenia Master). DX12 has a lot of issues rendering things such as block shader mapping for shadows and texture mips. I have moved on to using Xenia Canary exclusively now, as it also has some major performance upgrades over the Master build.
I recently used Xenia to play Saints Row 1 start to finish. Fun time. I had to use the canary build because it gives better performance. To prevent it from crashing, I had to set the "protect_zero" flag to true. I imagine other games that crash near the beginning can be fixed with that setting as well.
I kept asking for this, and... You made a video both explaining why you didn't do it, and then... Did it anyway in the same video. What a great channel!
One of the big fixes for Xenia is the config line: gpu_allow_invalid_fetch_constants Change this from false to true. Doesn't always work but it fixes quite a few black screens and glitches in the library, so it's worth a shot.
What an awesome revelation. All the hard work I did to backup my games to isos back in the days was useful . I literally thought Id never get around to playing them ever as the 360 is in storage half a planet away and I couldn't be arsed to set it up even if I had it . I've got a tonne of game isos but only about 40 on my current backup drive, just installed Xenia and tried a few and they all worked so I cant wait to give them all a go to see which ones I want to play.
Since XB360 emulation is still hit and miss, I've never tried it - until I saw you running Forza Horizon no problem. I know your desktop is ok, but not a ridiculously overpriced powerhouse, so I've taken the plunge. Thanks for a great video.
@@Bee_Mavrick not a multiplatform game? Plenty of them do have a pc port. I really wanted to play Journey to the west, but thought it was a Ps3 exclusive. Until I found out it wasn't, bought it for peanuts and played it on a weak media center pc start to finish, no issues at all.
Great coverage, as always! Hoping that Xenia development continues forward as impressively, especially as far playability on something like the Steam Deck is concerned. I’m not picky-even a Proton-based solution (a la CEMU on the Steam Deck) is a-ok with me. I revisited the XBox 360 with the leak of the older XLBA Golden Eye remake a couple years ago now, and while I enjoy the N64 version it remakes, the XLBA version is a really great way to revisit the game with a more modern facelift.
@@EpicB gotcha. My sense is that Linux builds of CEMU are preliminary, so I was curious if your post indicated a good experience. As of the last time I checked, the best way to use CEMU on Steam Deck was still via the Windows build with Proton, hence my allusion. The performance is pretty remarkable, so remarkable that it’s easy to forget it’s not a native Linux program. In some respects, this begs the question of whether or not a native build is even necessary, though I’m personally always happy to have one.

Forza Horizon runs and renders the ground floor outside the track finall? It used to be transparent, so trees would be flying in the air. Need to check it out! :)
Canary build is a gamechanger. Did you mention patches? you can get 720p and 60fps in games for example. Hit F5(or was it F4) to reload textures, fixes most graphics issues especially texture related. Also I've had success disabling "protect zero" and "break on unimplemented instruction" in settings.
I've been keeping an eye on this for a couple of years. Dying to replay Lost Odyssey but there're a bunch of problems at the moment - audio cutting/corruption, the texture bug that looks to be in most games, and crashing randomly. But it's still amazing, most of the work looks done already. It's enough for me to drink in the nostalgia but definitely not a playthoughable state.

I already showcased many 360 games with Xenia, including Shadow Complex, which can be fixed with a patch file, as long as you run the emulator's Canary version.
Wish I knew that you could download the disk to console back in the day. I would play Halo reach so much back in the day that I went through like 10 copy's.

I don't need to play with other people, I am fine playing solo. I just want to be able to access online content. Anything at all about custom servers, input in settings, anything that can create a mode or system setup to use online play? Any info on this is very much appreciated. I am using Too Human as an example but I would like to do this for any other games that might also have these same outcomes. EDIT: Wanted to say I was able to get Too Human to work on my machine. If you need to make it an ISO anyway, could you use a computer with something like IMGBurn to create the ISO directly, or do you have to use the Xbox to create the GoD files and make the ISO from that?

Feels really weird to emulate a system when the games are like 50 cents in a lot of secondhand shops. I understand having the option is cool but playing og hardware is almost always so much better than emulation, and the 360 is so insanely cheap to collect for that playing the original system seems much more worth it than messing around with filters snd settings

Honestly I’m not really a huge fan of the determination that “you can just use backwards compatibility”. I just find it more convenient to have a gaming pc that can play 360 games than a gaming pc and a newer xbox

This is GREAT, because my Xbox 360 needs a new cooling system, and so in order to play it, it must sit atop of my Vornado fan.

I went through 5. All RRoD. All luckily covered by warranty. But after that I went to PS3 and never looked back.

Fable 2 would be a big one. As it's not available on PC for some reason. And it, along with the first game we're the best of the trilogy.

You need both Canary and standard Xenia. Dead Rising plays fine on standard Xenia for example.

True, there are many reasons why playing these games on the Xbox 360 is still great -- cheap games, guaranteed compatibility, and cloud saves!
