    We get that question often: “HOW DO I SLOW DOWN MY SWING” or “HOW DO I STOP RUSHING MY DOWNSWING?” And the answer is so much easier than you think! We are absolute gravity geniuses and through our natural self preserving central nervous system, we thrive when it comes to simple tasks with simple tools. The golf club is A SIMPLE TOOL as soon as you understand completely what the heck it was designed for; which is “Cutting grass along the ground” and “compressing golf balls towards targets comprised of flight plans. this channel is spot on with releasing the weight of the club past impact. nothing but praise for translating that "feel" through great examples and reasoning.
    .
    however, it seems that the same logic is overlooked in explaining swing speed. savannah did clue at it @6:19, "levitation." personally, it feels like a "bounce" or a "flex," where the change of speed and direction at the moment from backswing to downswing is FELT by the weight of the golf club (weight of club and hands; versus club and arms at downswing). the difference in focus is subtle, but i think being able to feel this weight at the top of the backswing defines a player's tempo (understanding the dominance relationship between player and club). if the swing is actually too fast for the player then the "flex" won't be felt. it will be stiff in the hands, like a jerk - this is what makes the viewer perceive that the player's swing is too fast. therefore, the more experienced player has access to a faster swing because he/she still feels the "flex" even at a greater swing speed.
    .
    just mentioning in passing, because it seemed like the exceptional release philosophy of this channel could be applied AS MUCH in the backswing. the transition moment from backswing to downswing of all three players feel a bit static - like a stall. possibly, the calm before a storm? (storm being the downswing impact). however, if the objective is to release the weight of a golf club through the downswing, perhaps maximizing this weight is of great interest?
    .
    i like golf a lot

    Watching Shawn and the guys swinging the club and facing away from the ball with back to the target suddenly made sense. I went to the range and hit seven iron, five iron distance, and five iron three iron distance. It's not the distance; it's the feel at impact which sets this heave and turn gravity swing apart. The sound is spectacular! I'm a fifty-three-year-old man, carrying five irons nearly 190 yards with crappy old range balls. Insane.
    I also realised that taking this to the course is going to be a challenge because I have to let go of my ball fixation. I'm too square on and don't turn my shoulder or torso around enough to generate the kind of momentum Shawn does with this approach. Practice. Practice. Practice.
    I've hit literally tens of thousands of golf balls this year: none as cleanly and far and today.

      @maralvor 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Adam. Very impressive and it must be great fun!
      May I ask what your club head speed with say 5 iron is? Does your new way of swinging affect speed or does better compression give more distance or a bit of both? Thanks Regards Ian

    • @adamhazelwood5282
      @adamhazelwood5282 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ian, I haven't measured club head speed, but I would estimate it's up 4-5 mph, but I'm crushing it so ball speed will be a more significant increase.

  • @Sean_Farmer

    The two biggest swing killers are probably a hurried backswing (which leads to a rushed downswing) and having too tight of a grip (which leads to tension in the muscles). Feeling the weight of the clubhead and allowing it to do the work is crucial. That, combined with swinging THROUGH the ball (instead of at it) will lead to great results. The hammer drill is great to get people to understand both concepts.

    A little settling awareness of the club at the top of the backswing has huge benefits. Right on Savy. At 11:35 of this video Shawn talks about the right hand snapping under the left well past impact of course. The only person that I can recall explaining this motion was Mike Austin. Mike Austin with I believe Mike Dunaway describes this feel in great detail in his youtube videos. R.I.P gentlemen. Although I disagree with much of Mr. Austin's methods I feel there are some things which we all can learn and apply to our swings to improve. Now that Shawn has raised my awareness of this feel it has my interest. To be honest I have really never given it much thought. This maybe due to a more focused attention of the solidness of impact and the flight of my golfball. Shawn please don't ever make Mu mad . You are to valuable to lose. That Mu seems like a calm cool rockstar.

    I always felt if we could take the hands out of the golf swing most people would hit much more solid consistent shots. Too many people try to generate all the power with their hands when the hands aren't driving the swing, just hanging on (obviously important, but not the most). I think you would agree since you did point out her grip is strong but did not try to change it, although I think she could improve it a little since she does not look too relaxed holding the club. For years I have had a tendency to get quick at the top of the swing and it's those hands trying to lead my swing. I love the sledge hammer! There's no way of throwing that thing from the top, it has to pick up speed going through. Last Summer I really focused on Eddie Merrin's 'swinging the handle' and my ball-striking has improved quite a bit. With that concept and it feeling like a sledge hammer I might be able to break 80 someday......

    I like the way you explain things Shawn. And you have two good students to demonstrate swings. Your shop is set up well too for demonstrating the golf swing and throwing those hammers. I watched one of your videos last night and I hit the ball effortlessly today...I actually have been hitting the ball very good for me, but your tips just seem to help that much more. And, I have be careful not to over stress my body because when I was in my twenties (56 now) I played club golf but I didn’t really know how to do the effortless swing and really tore my back and knees up over the years by going at the ball like a savage. With what you are teaching I am getting good distance with a fraction of the effort...so I can feel I’m not over stressing my back and my leading knee (left knee). For a long time I was really stressing the left knee at impact and it was only marginally giving me more power but it was really tearing it up (i’m Lucky I found your channel and expect to be able to play a lot longer now). Magnifique, démonstration de l'importance de laisser faire la gravité dans le swing. Depuis que j'ai pris le chemin de wisdomingolf je suis passé dans une autre dimension( fer 7 entre 175m et 190m alors qu'avant 140m à 150m) J'ai amélioré malgré mes 66ans toutes mes distances. Une ombre au tableau je n'ai pas le même relâchement avec le driver car je ne sais pas pourquoi mais des que j'attrape ce club je veux en rajouter un peu plus donc plus de tension dans les bras et j'ai moins la sensation du poids de l'outil et donc de la gravité. One H-U-G-E lesson. I really struggle with swinging too fast because I manipulate the club head to hit the ball(target), resulting in over the top, glancing contact despite all that effort. You asked Savannah, when she was pretending to hit a nail with a hammer, ""If you had to do this all day, how would you hit down? With force or with the weight of the hammer." So when I am taking my practice swing, I ask myself, "Could I swing all day with this effort." If the answer is "no", chances are that I am defaulting to the ball. Great job. In passing, however, can you ask Savannah to slice one, just once, so I don't feel "defective"? :)

    Shawn, a lot of great explanation on your swing methodology but a couple of questions. First how do you know if you grip has become too strong? Also when watching you swing a club you seem to have a very upright backswing as did your two students. Is my observation correct? If yes, I hear and see so much today about shallowing the downswing. Do you agree that the downswing should shallow and if so, how do you do that with such an upright swing? Also, is a slight pause at the top of the backswing a key ingredient of your swing methodology.

    Question: Is it possible that Munashe’s extended left index finger, is contributing to difficulty in “releasing” the club?

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say not really, if you look at John Daly, his index is double stretched compared to Munashe’s; and when he gets the proper grip size, after all this craziness is over, it will adjust a little better as it will have something to wrap around. In the meantime, Munashe is improving leaps and bounds and will be shooting below 95 this year.

    Shawn, at about 12 minutes in the video whilst coaching Moo you asked to close the club face more and ensure the club was bottoming at a point in front of the ball. Did Moo close the club face by adjusting his grip? And if so did he merely rotate the club more closed in the same grip? Or did he regroup with a stronger grip with more knuckles showing? In trying to close the club face or open the club face do you rotate the club and maintain the Sam grip or do you my the grip stronger or weaker?

      Really a nice piece to swing! 34 to 36 inches is what it feels like; about the length of a putter

  •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The club impacts the ball with a force and that force has two components...
    Velocity and Mass = momentum
    You can swing it fast with only the arms(velocity) or swing it slower and use the weight of your body(mass). Mass trumps velocity...The trick is figuring how to do it and that is what everyone struggles with so they continue with what they know and never improve.
    Went back and watched Mu again and it seems he's swinging to the finish

      This is where your own kinetic chain comes in! We all have it and use it to throw a stone, hit a baseball, cut grass with a grass whip, slash a sword, sling a hockey puck, swing an axe...and we are awesome at it. When we perform one of these tasks in a brainless way, our machine will deliver the action at 40 Million bits of info per second and in a manner that is self preserving. To have to think about what body parts to use and in what sequence to use them while performing the movement would be complete insanity as this conscious process can only work at 40 bits per second and one thing at a time.

      This is essential to delivering towards a target! If you are a lumberjack, and you want to split wood, yes, shoulders are level to direct the energy straight down vertically through the wood; but if you were to chop a tree down, you need to direct the energy more horizontally, which means a different tilt of the body and shoulders follow that flow! This is the essence of golf, baseball, hockey, lacrosse etc…

    This is my principal problem. My brain thinks I need to rush the club. It also thinks the golf ball is heavy so my muscles tense up into impact. So I'm killing the momentum of the club head and preventing the release of the club head. Even though I know that I'm perceiving it incorrectly, I can't seem to convince my brain to let my muscles relax through the swing. I can hit a light practice ball pretty nicely because my brain knows it's light and there is no need to tense up for impact, but once I'm looking down at a golf ball, by brain thinks there's no way this light club can create enough force to move that dense, heavy rock sitting on the ground without muscling it. I'm hoping this video can help me.
