Hi . Love your channel , good to hear detailed info from someone who has indepth knowledge on Trek bikes. I am in a situation here , need help. I got my Marlin 8 gen 3 , but now I feel I should have gone for Roscos 7. What is your opinion.
You can put a tapered steer tube fork with replacing the headset having the bottom cup to be an external cup and the top can stay the same. FSA makes one and I’m sure many other brands also. This opens the potential to put basically any 100-120mm fork on the bike. It will slacken the head tube angle adding this headset so I think safely 120mm fork maximum. As far as commuting, I converted mine( Marlin 6) to a commuter with 40c Maxxis Rambler tires, and will recently swap the fork. It will be returning to the trails when my commuter touring bike comes in( Brodie Elan).
Trek markets this bike as mountain bike that also good for commuter duty. For over $1200 US this is a hard sell when other brands bring bikes to the table at this price point with modern standards such as thru axles and tapered head tubes. If you wanted to stay with trek, just save up $350 and get a Roscoe 7 which by all standards is a much more capable and durable bike that will not be beaten into obsolescence so easily.
Dont get me wrong i think you are kinds right but.. I ride black trails with my 400 dollar bike and after many many hours its still doesn't brake. So I dont think the trek marlin will do either😊 if you are not a horrible rider of course😂
@@TheMFRaxi I have a 22’ Marlin 7 and a Canondale Habit full suspension that costs over three times as much (and more with the upgrades I’ve made, especially to the fork). The Marlin is really an entry level MTB most people who are committed to improving will quickly grow out of due to the inability to easily upgrade the fork, and the relatively puny axels and smaller tires you have to run, at least on the rear. If you try to put full size tires, they will rub in the back inside frame. I’m also hesitant to send it through drops because I don’t feel the hardtail is robust enough to stand up to the bigger impacts. If I’m not mistaken, Trek did correct a lot of these issues in the newest generation of Marlins, but I do regret not spending a little more for a Roscoe, or even the same amount for a used one.
@@teecee4459 its 2000 dollars in my country. Its not entry level pricing. And if your not a horrible rider you should be able to ride a trek marlin with ease just like a canyon.
@@TheMFRaxi it ships from Germany, you buy it online. You can't buy it any other way. It's $1,350. It's an entry level hardtail mountain bike. It's not up for debate. Pure facts.
Got it down to Marlin 8 and or x caliber 9, went with the x caliber 9…no regrets, superb ride.
That's the perfect end result.
Seem to be a very fair review. And I think this bike would be more than enough for a large portion of the Mountain biking community.
Thanks for the feedback - and we agree! A great choice for many.

How tall are you ? Looks like you would be better suited to a XXL frame with the amount of dropper post and seat post sticking out of the seat tube.
Hayden is 6'3"" - the fit was fine, he didn't want any longer or higher in the front. Thankfully, there are options though given the huge size range.
Cable/brake hose routing making my eye twitch
Just about any bike can be tweaked once it's your own!
When you say big jumps do you mean like trick jumps? If you for example jump a little on a flowtrail can it handle that well?
You bet!

the frame looks weird It's so long in everything
That's probably because XL bikes don't get used in media reviews that often.
$2600? Wow! So many other bikes I'd rather have for way less $$.
This one is $AUD1899
I lost interest at the 100mm fork..
You probably should have stayed engaged to find out about Hayden's other recommendations then. 😆
UNTIL you discover the Canyon Grand Canyon 8. Then the Marlin 8 looks like crap.
A great option! Above our price barrier ($2000) for this group test (save for the current sale price).
Until you discover Canyon is only ment for people who want to buy a bike instead of a car
