I think the whole "life is terrible" rant is because Claire is a play on the "I'm sad and depressed and nobody gets me!" Mentality. She's an "edgy" character determined to be the miserable titular character of her story. Like Bella Swan complaining about the small town and weather, as is often the case with angst ridden teen girl antagonists. Everyone not emotional and down is a prep and has a perfect life, that's what those characters are made of. But that's just my take!
Thats basically a mentality some people have in real life, i had it for a bit, but i didnt like how alpha jay said he doesnt like her character just because he's never understood her side, of course she wouldnt understand gumball, either way its a good episode.
I think you're looking at the episode from a wrong perspective. The episode is supposed to be a parody of those cheesily angsty teen dramas where the angsty teen (Clare) clashes with a cartoony *main* character who wants to be part of everyone's life (Gumball). And for an episode that tries to make a surreal and cartoony side bounce off of an angsty and serious side, The Others executes this so darn well. Everything about this episode is supposed to be comical to the wits, and Clare's depressing story isn't something that was made to be taken seriously at all because of this.
He missed the whole point of the show, the more he analyzes the show in depth, he starts to not understanding the show more. The show is a joke, and if you try to explain it, it will eventually die.
Personally, I thought this was one of the show's most underrated episodes. I can understand why it would get some hate because Gumball's extreme selfishness, but I think that's what makes it funny. To him, he *HAS* to play a big role in everyone's lives.
Idk, I thought this episode was funny. Also, gumball and Darwin have always been portrayed as “what not to do” characters so this makes sense. The only episode of this show I can remember disliking was the one where baby Anais is weirdly evil for no reason.
Random quick theory on why Baby Anais was evil: Maybe her abnormally high intelligence belonging to a baby that hadn't learned morals yet meant that she used all her intelligence unrestrained by concepts of right or wrong, depending on whatever flighty baby whims she had. The wants of an infant + extremely high intelligence + lack of morals = chaotic evil
How has no one pointed out that clare, who talks about "my so called world", is literally a reference to the show "my so called life"? The main character was played by claire Danes. Everything about the character is a joke on that show.
I thought this episode was hilarious. The main joke in this episode is that Gumball and Claire are both stubborn, self-absorbed narcissists. Claire is a parody of your stereotypical emo teen who is clearly, clearly fishing for attention by constantly reveling in how angsty and miserable her life is, all building up to her big, melodramatic bus ride away from town. But some random kid, who is a complete stranger to her, keeps butting in and ruining everything because Gumball will not accept that everything is not all about him and he wants everything to be wacky and spontaneous all the time. She keeps lashing out at the boys, even when they offer up ways to make her problems better, because no one is stealing her time in the spotlight away from her dammnit. This clash of egos between Gumball and Claire finally comes to a head in the ending, where Gumball snaps and literally crashes Claire's monologue to make a huge scene, which is gloriously cringeworthy. An episode where all three of the focus characters are stubborn, self-absorbed twats the whole time probably isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea, which seems to be the reason why our host Alpha Jay didn't enjoy it, but it was right up my alley.
This episode was HILARIOUS! I loved the way they forced a happy ending in the end and Gumball just HAD to be the main character in EVERYONE'S story 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
A previous review ' i think called the laziest' he also took too seriously and was stuck in a state of mind trying desperately to grab lore from a running gag, and the review basically fell off the rails with his dissatisfied and disappointment from the running gag and not basically be an episode about Larry. The climax of the gag was they got Larry to become Lazy Larry, but he was too lazy to even acknowledge them, let alone help them. With the episode about the boys trying to out lazy Richard. That episode was never about the lore of Larry, and it was never even ment to be taken seriously. Why it was hated by some viewers was because of the treatment of Larry, with his life rapidly destroyed by his reactionary outbursts to the brothers constantly asking for Larry to help. But again, this was an early season 1-2 episode, and Larry was designed to be the punching bag for a joke in episodes. His misfortune is made to be funny, and sometimes he is still an adult that see's right through Gumball's antics, which also leads to humor.
I honestly didn't even know what the hell it was parodying either. But honestly, reviews are meant to be taken seriously majority of the time. So he took the whole episode seriously because its literally what he does on this channel.
The episode is meant to emulate "My So-Called Life". Mopey girl named Claire (based on Angela, played by Claire Danes). Best friend with identity issues, narration, melancholy tone... this is a homage.
2:09 so if their world revolves around Gumball, does that mean that if he were to die, then Elmore would fall apart and get sucked into the Void? Because the central figure of its existence would no longer be there to support it and initiate cause and effect, therefore bringing Elmore to an absolute thermoequillibrium? That would make one hell of a dark fanfiction.
No that wasn't the point, it was talking about how self-center a character Gumball is and how every episodes revolve around him, as he's the primarily character of the series, and so he can't imagine/picture a situations that doesn't have him involved in it in some way.
Claire is that type of girl who would sit in her dark room listening to Billie Eilish songs and be like "Oh my God this song represents me and my mood soooo much.."
I realized that everyone always hates on “the girlfriend” and whenever i made a comment about how people take it at face value, everyone just said that I was wrong. But alpha jay said it wasn’t bad and all the comments were like “yeah it wasn’t that bad. I don’t get why everyone hates this episode.
It's because those are the people that don't form their own opinions, they just fangirl over content creators and parrot them because they think it makes them cool.
The bully. She in general rules is not funny, is PAINFUL to watch (except the coconut joke). She getting the right conclussion WITH NO REASON is also bad writting. And that final joke is nail on the coffin.
@@N12015 Ngl, that feels exactly like something a cartoon reviewer would say. It sounds like you're parroting someone. And trust me, I've parroted cartoon reviewers before.
Gumball has been an attention hog.Almost every episode is Gumball trying to prove himself, solve anyone's problem,or causing some kind of mischief to ruin somebody's day to make himself feel better.
I might have totally missed the point of 6:52 minus mark but you can be depressed and mad/frustrated at the same time there not really emotions that are separate from each other
11:05 Certainly she didn't hear that "The Faith" song I'm more interested in Wilson life than Clare. C'mon he's anime football cheerleader goth trombonist!
This episode i love, I love how stupid and cliche she is, she works really well as a punching bag for the jokes here (tho thats because i dont like her as a character, but as a PARODY of a character) and that amazing epic ending. This episode is just fun and jokes i really like one after the other. 6:22 thats the joke, i dont care about them. To me the episode is making fun of them and i like it for that. Well i have established im an asshole but i dont think you have to be one in order to enjoy the episode. 11:28 i think the episode is not taking a stand on the matter, rather portraing the problem in a neutral way using comedy as a vehicle, no one is right and no one is wrong 100%. And the ending works because its a fantasy setting, working really well in escapism, but it makes think "too bad i dont live in a fantastic world where everything just falls into place... unless" Yeah nothing will magically work out, but it gives a little bit on optimism same way as the song in "The Faith" its pure positive nihilisim. Then again, i dont enjoy the episode because of that, i just enjoy it because its funny from begining to end for me. 12:39 and that scene was amazing i dont know what are you talking about at this point xD. 12:57 what are you talking about? The contrast is what makes it work as a joke. I think you didn't enjoy this one because it hit too close to home for you in the depresion department. 13:10 great atmosphere? Where? Maybe its beacuse, again, Clare is nothing but a comedy punching bag for me.
Maybe that's the point? Like this is a parody of those cheap, cheesy teen drama stories with usually cringe dialogue with no life put in the words. Just my thoughts.
in claire's defense, gumball has no relevance in her life and has no right to steal the spotlight of her drama simply to make the world revolve around him! that's basically what the episode is about in the first place... sure you can dislike her if you want but i think your argument kinda missed the point of the episode!

I thought it was funny when Darwin handed her a pen after she said "... I write with my tears as ink." also, I think when clair was saying real life is essentially miserable, I think it is supposed to represent how some people almost enjoy being sad & making their life a sob story when it isn't actually that bad. Because sure, shitty things happen but there are such things as happy endings, even in the smallest of scenarios. Like when the weather was supposed to be rainy on a day you had plans, but somehow it ends up being warm with a light breeze & not a grey cloud in sight. It's like what Iroh said in The Legend of Korra: "if you look for light, you can often find it. but if you seek the dark, it is all you will ever see."
The DVD is one of my favorate episodes of all time. That ending was gold. *Darwin:* I knew we should have put other peoples names in the credits *Gumball:* WHAT AND GIVE THEM ALL THE GLORY!
Including Doof was a horrible decision. He stole the spotlight from all of the other characters in their own show. And Doof wasn't even as good as he was in the original series. At this point, it wasn't even Milo Murphy's Law. It was discount Doof ruins it for everyone. Doof wasn't meant to be a side character, so they didn't write him as one, they just replaced Milo as the main character.
@@JoshucaVA I respectfully disagree, doof being added was a great decision. In my opinion he was just as great in this, the show actually continued his story of trying to become a good guy,of course this is usually the B plot of the episodes. I also disagree with the idea that doof took the spotlight away from Milo. I think season two was just as good as season one,but this is just my opinion.
@@pikapals41 it doesn't really make sense right?? The current Anais would never do that to her brothers... She even want to spent time with them... Helping Gumball and Darwin in their homeworks and chores etc... She is not evil... But it that episode, Baby Anais is just so EVIL, completely opposite of current Anais
I have it admit it was funny, Clair being a severe parody of the mopey, sad, overdramatic female(s) that pop up in numerous shows (Riverdale for example.) Also, really liked the somewhat fourth wall breaking jab about Gumball living in a world that is "amazing, magical world where everything just falls into place." Reference to the fact it is a world like that more often than not is great.
Speaking of Riverdale, how in the world would a lighthearted Archie comics turned into a teenage drama show that nobody ever get it? It seemed dull and it never fits in the Archie tone.
@@comettamer I know Riverdale was a typical teenage drama show, but Archie seemed to have a lot of colors especially it had some comical moments. Even "Sugar Sugar, Honey Honey" song from The Archies was even a hit in the 60s and it's still relevent today. (I only heard that song from the Bee Movie without knowing where it came from until years later)
@@poweroffriendship2.0 Again true. But then even some fairly recent Archieverse stuff has been fairly dark. Like how they officially ended the "Life with Archie" series. Or some of the more soap opera worthy moments of the "Archie & Veronica" and "Archie & Betty" series.

I saw the episode as one big reference to sappy drama shows that blow sad things out of proportion and I found it funny with it being juxtaposed alongside the whimsical and silly world of Gumball. It's perhaps not the best episode if people take claire too seriously and assume her to representative to people IRL who do actually have real issues. Like as someone who's been battling depression for over a decade I can laugh at this episode of a cartoon, but I would be greatly annoyed by someone who didn't know me coming along and assuming they could just take my frown and turn it upside down.
To be honest in my eyes Clare was not only bland and unlikeable, but she also does nothing else in the series other than be a background charecter who was used for lame meta humor. She had so much potential because she could have been relateble if the following happened: Gumball and Darwin try to help and Clare is skeptikal at first. Eventually after many attempts she decides to try out their advice. It turns out to work and Clare and Gumball become friends and eventually everything works out and she doesn't have to move. She thanks Gumball and from then on decides to become a more positive person. That would have been a much better intro to Clare's character and a much better episode.
@@icecreamhero2375 but they can still have those elements of parody with Clare saying goodbye to her friends and Gumball trying to help her before she finally gives in. You see what I'm saying
I feel like she should’ve treated them like little kids until she gave in to trying their advice so they shut up and it actually works. Then she can awkwardly thank them. Idk thats just my idea
while I understand how gumball was selfish in this episode trying to forcefully help her I still think it's hilarious that it all actually worked out, not only making it so claire gets to stay in town and be with all of her friends and that her dad has a new job now, but the fact that this just ups gumball's ego more so by the fact he was right and how forcing himself into her life fixed everything

This episode in a nutshell: "Here's a joke where we take the unstoppable force of Sad Teenager and apply it to the immovable object of Obnoxious Tween." "Well, that wasn't funny, just annoying." "I know how to fix it! Let's *escalate!"*
I think the reason why I love this episode is because I was claire! I was this super edgy, negative, person and when I finally got past that phase of my life, I became a gumball! I thought it was awesome how they satirized the exact person I was. It made me laugh, and remember how trivial a lot of my feelings and anxieties were. Sort of put things in perspective for me
"The others" only showed us that gumball and darwin can't stand sharing the spotlight. The only way to have an episode not star them is to only have them mentioned and nothing more. Like in the anais and the bully girl episode ( forgot both the character and episode name ).
@@danielperez143 Only Gumball can't stand to share the spotlight. Darwin genuinely just wanted to help Claire, Gumball is the one who only did it to make himself the center of attention again. Darwin genuinely believed they were doing that to help Claire lol.
How could this be the worst? It establishes the third greatest character in the series, pixel frog teacher guy. That alone brings it to the top 17 episodes
This is actually one of my favorite episodes (I enjoy stories focusing on background characters). I always found it funny how Gumball did all he can to get attention.
I honestly relate the Clare, especially when life kicks you down and you literally have zero control over it. I personally like this episode because of the way Gumball interacts with Clare. Every time he’s onscreen it makes me laugh.
Alright, it’s official. Claire is already one of my most favourite characters and probably one of the best. I wish she could stay forever in the series and have more episodes of her own.
Yeah I get the joke, the show is a comedy with constant happy endings. Claire's story is supposed to be about a sad drama show. And I think she is trying to deny the cutsie cartoon since there are different shows in the same world. We later come to know the characters are in a show when the family gets attacked and Gumball asks about a device to rewind, when Rob gets his hands on a remote and can use it to pause and rewind, and when Rob figures out they are all in a show. So it could be that in the same network, Gumball's show is bleeding into Claire's and even though she seeks happiness, her character must deny the fact that the show cannot have a happy ending. It's like a Marvel universe concept except with Gumball designed characters. Idk that's my spin on it, I agree it isn't fun watching Claire basically complaining about being sad but then demanding that her story has to end is a sad way.
That episode was the equivalent of swallowing a multivitamin the size of a thumb. _Without water._ Claire was such a drag, she could've been written better.
@@AoiFlame02 Yeah, but there's good parodies and bad parodies. A good parody keeps you laughing and invested, a bad one is grating and forgettable. She was the latter.
@@glidershower Eh, a parody only works if people get it and don't take it seriously. That doesn't mean it's bad if you don't get it because this parody was directed at certain people who could instantly tell what the parody was about. Obviously, you weren't the demographic they were aiming for.
I actually love this episode. All because how crazy Gumball go just to make into this episode. It sepose to be a Clare sad story but Gumball try to make her to feel better and at least have a happy ending. When Gumball realize how crazy the school, the people and pretty much everybody in Elmore is, he gather them all just to make Clare stay in Elmore. Still love that crazy un-sure happy ending
Thinking back on this episode I took away a lesson of Just ask for help you stubborn bastard and when ppl refuses to help you then and only then can you you wallow in self pity, depression, and hopelessness.
Do some people really dislike this episode? I actually think it's one of the better ones. It's a parody of all those moody emo tv characters, and (for me at least) all the jokes landed perfectly, especially the ending. It also expanded the "world" of Gumball by adding more characters. Sure, they're not major characters, but it's nice to see some new faces.
I have to say it, I hate Wilson from this episode! I understand what he's supposed to represent and all that, but it slaps us in the face so hard! I get it, he's a teen with an identity crisis, but it feels more like multiple personality disorder in the way it's represented, and even then it feels bad. If he constantly switched between personalities randomly rather than cycling through, I'd probably enjoy his character more
Claire was a parody of a 90's teen genre that was popular on late-night nickelodeon or Canada. "My So-Called Teenage Life," "Daria", and a few others that portrayed angsty teenage girls and their viewpoints with controversial topics. She is spot-on in this portrayal and to see Gumball become its foil is hilarious.
Depression often leads To anger anger often leads to depression it’s normally is very hot and cold My idea is that when. Darwin was Being Clare if he grabbed a Plant to put it on himself
Claire really made me really mad, as someone who's had to leave things behind for reasons beyond control, I trully wished she was handled better given her situation, but she was just the over-the-top depressed "real life sucks" teen, and she legit wanted to be sad for the sake of being sad and actually turned down Gumball's offers to help her. Yes, Gumball is mostly obnoxious trough the episode, but at this point, I just wanted her to listen, I actually related to that example where Darwin threw Gumball trough the window as well, which goes back to the whole point that if she just listened or learned to have a less gloomy take on life, it would've went by better, you could probably still make something with that, instead of just having her reject Gumball again and again and again trough the whole episode(which I found more obnoxious than Gumball insisting to help tbh) until he literally rushes every solution possible to her life at the very end. Even without expecting a cartoony "everything went right at the end" ending, or with Gumball's obnoxious butting in, she was legit rejecting support or a chance to keep her life as-is because _"it's not aboutchu!"_ Even then, I liked this episode because of all the people just wanting her to accept Gumball's help, because I also wanted her to do so, because she was blatantly denying any chance to not be as sad as she is
In this case Gumball and Darwin where internationally harassing her so I think its unfair to blame her, all they needed to do was leave her alone which isnt that hard, she made it clear over and over again that she wanted to be left alone so they should have just taken the hint
This whose episode is a parody though. It’s actually one of the funniest ones imo because it captures teen dramas and their over the top characterizations pretty well
One thing I like about this episode is that when they put the Clair hair on Darwin they make the outlines thinner to match his art style (as opposed to just copying Claire’s hair that has much thicker lines)
I'm sorry, but gumball at the end forcing everything to go right while shouting was funny to me. I agree with all your points though gumball was just being so stupid that it was funny
This episode was pretty good to me, but the best parts to me were the end, dude that was so funny, and the parts where gumball and darwin just randomly come out of nowwhere and just cut into the story, makes me laugh everytime.
As someone who has dealt with Depression and the feeling that you just don't deserve to feel happiness I'd hate to deal with someone else interrupting every decision I take to try to cope with my situation, forcing a happy energetic mood onto me until I do as they say
honestly I disagree, this is probably one of the funniest gumball episodes I've seen, there's so many amazing gags in this episode, especially the one darwin throw gumball out the window
TL:DR: It's a jab at sad movies where the character wears grey tinted glasses and talks in Tumblr Blogs. I think you think "Why did everything go wrong" because you just don't like the joke stereotype Claire is supposed to be at all, and you were maybe taking her character too seriously. Honestly, I find this as a satire/jab at the "Edgy goth kids" who claim everyone who isn't an edgy goth kid has a perfect life, and the fact that Gumball and Darwin try to help her and she despises the help is part of that jab. She's claiming life is so terrible, and when G and D try to help her, she gets all mad. That sounds to me like they're poking fun at them saying "Sometimes they're literally TRYING to be sad," as in, the poser is Claire because she could easily stop being sad and have everything fixed, but refuses to accept the help. Idk if I wholly agree to the sentiment I received from the episode However I think the ending is actually hilarious, and a great Climax to this whole jab. As you say "Edgy Tumblr Story about woe is me," and when they present everything it's great because it's literally the "Perfect ending," it almost feels like they're trying to catch her in a lie, like they want her to either say "Ok I want my life back to normal" or "I actually want to leave all my friends and I've been full of it this whole time"
I can relate to the second one!! I am pretty wild! And you have to admit that scene of Darwin throwing Gumball out the window and setting off the alarm is hilarious!
*Sonder* _n._ 1. The realization that every random passerby has their own complete lives. 2. One of the literary themes that is easiest to royally screw up.

TommyTonk exactly
I honestly didn't even know what the hell it was parodying either. But honestly, reviews are meant to be taken seriously majority of the time. So he took the whole episode seriously because its literally what he does on this channel.
@@b3nt079 Just because you review an episode doesn't mean you have to miss the parody. I am confused.
That sounds like a legit episode
No that wasn't the point, it was talking about how self-center a character Gumball is and how every episodes revolve around him, as he's the primarily character of the series, and so he can't imagine/picture a situations that doesn't have him involved in it in some way.

Where? I thought it was funny when Darwin handed her a pen after she said "... I write with my tears as ink." also, I think when clair was saying real life is essentially miserable, I think it is supposed to represent how some people almost enjoy being sad & making their life a sob story when it isn't actually that bad. Because sure, shitty things happen but there are such things as happy endings, even in the smallest of scenarios. Like when the weather was supposed to be rainy on a day you had plans, but somehow it ends up being warm with a light breeze & not a grey cloud in sight.
@@poweroffriendship2.0 It sort of does, depending on what part of the Archieverse you're dealing with. Some of it did get pretty dang dark.

I think it was a pretty smart and funny episode. To be honest, the criticism is _very_ nitpicky and subjective at this turn.

Probably because prior till lapis joining the crystal gems, she had a similar "edgy, depressed teen" personality
I love this episode and Clare is awesome and underrated idk why people think this episdoe bad when it not.
Even without expecting a cartoony "everything went right at the end" ending, or with Gumball's obnoxious butting in, she was legit rejecting support or a chance to keep her life as-is because _"it's not aboutchu!"_
Even then, I liked this episode because of all the people just wanting her to accept Gumball's help, because I also wanted her to do so, because she was blatantly denying any chance to not be as sad as she is
In this case Gumball and Darwin where internationally harassing her so I think its unfair to blame her, all they needed to do was leave her alone which isnt that hard, she made it clear over and over again that she wanted to be left alone so they should have just taken the hint

honestly I disagree, this is probably one of the funniest gumball episodes I've seen, there's so many amazing gags in this episode, especially the one darwin throw gumball out the window
Gumball: Now let's go make Clare happy, whether she likes it or not
That just fucking destroyed the episode for me.
Idk if I wholly agree to the sentiment I received from the episode
However I think the ending is actually hilarious, and a great Climax to this whole jab.
