I ADORE Tracy Chapman. Not only is she wonderfully talented, everything I've ever observed or read about her reveals her as a kind and gentle soul. And she's absolutely real...no pretension there. She is a rare human.
The "squeeze" part equates to excessive clinginess. She's saying that a person who is too clingy basically saps your life away, imposing themselves on you and draining the days and freedoms of your life.

Sure, blues has greatly influenced many genres of music, but not all. Folk, reggae, contemporary "classical" music, and industrial rock have taken very little from blues. Blues itself had its origins in West African traditional rhythms. So all western music is interconnected to a degree.
You forget about British, Irish and Scottish folk songs. Other European music also influenced today's music.

Fast Car - lyrics. Give Me One Reason - music! I’ll take blues based music every time. It’s what’s sorely missing in almost all today’s and recent music. The music industry doesn’t want to touch it, nor do the artists. Pretty much pops up only rarely, primarily in what’s left in the Rock (not metal) world. And it is a crime.

This is Rhythm & Blues. Blues guitars with mainly Blues subject matter, but with a much larger band giving a sort of "Happy" feeling to the music.

Cool tune, Tracy is great, her cassette tape was on rotation in my car back in the day, and I'm in Ireland. So she was a world wide hit with tunes that told everyone's story in one way or another.

If u listen to Tracy Chapman's debut album, u will notice that she tells stories about other people... not necessarily her personal experiences. That was where 'Fast car' came from... a familiar story in America of the reality of young people trying to find an escape from their problems... She wrote 'Across the lines'... about race riots in America's past... the spoken word track 'Behind the wall'... was written about the reality of domestic abuse and femicide.
I love this song. One of my top 10 of all time. Tracy Chapman is sublime.

Everybody freaked out about how catchy this song was when it was released, and it is, but it is simple 12-bar blues (if you don't know what this is, ask a musician friend). Very clever of her to bring it to the masses, but any beginning guitarist is familiar with this form.
But SHE did it, with her special voice and vibe. THAT'S the difference.
Thousands of songs have been written over many years which are ‘based’ on the 12-bar blues music form and variations of it.
Growing up a blues fan, I ALWAYS appreciate a straight 12-bar, I-IV-V blues song!

It was 1996/1997, I was in the Army, stationed in Camp Zama, Japan, coming back to work after lunch; as I pulled into the parking lot this song came on Armed Forces Radio. Never heard it, nor of her, before. I sat in the car and listened to the song all the way thru, which I NEVER did. As soon as it was over I put the car in reverse and drove to the Post Exchange just hoping they had Tracy's CD. They did, and of course I still have it all these years later.

I agree with the other commenters.... she wants someone who is not going to try to control her.. but I also think she is wanting someone who is going to love her and allow her to focus on her career. So I would think traveling a lot and being on the road.. so would need someone who is cool with that and not insecure. However.. that's just me reading a lot more into it.. and personalizing it to maybe Tracy's life at the time this song was coming out. Any ways...... Great example of the 12 bar blues chord progression. It is the best vehicle for both lyrics and soloing any instrument...and tracy has the perfect voice for blues, i wish she did more in this style
