    Please cover KKND and Dark Reign. They introduced unit experience and unit AI respectively back in the 90's and were well ahead of their time in that respect.

      KKND is on my list to cover and will likely be on the next part of this series. Dark Reign I will have to check out for sure to see if I should add it in. Thanks for the suggestions and watching!

      @AitsZ Awesome. KKND and Dark Reign were childhood favourites of mine. Dark Reign is a cult classic that still has an active modding and multiplayer community to this day. It was so far ahead of its time with advanced unit AI and pathfinding as well as a comprehensive map editor.
      I think it is definitely worth a mention for doing so much to expand the genre and tactical concepts within it.
      Looking forward to part 2.

      Yea just was never a manual read guy. Especially for it's main purpose of showing you how to play lol. I do enjoy the manuals of games that give a background of the games character storyline and the beautiful concept art like War2. The settlers manual just did not give me the same feeling unfortunately. Still, I do appreciate your comment and tuning in!

    Calling settlers and red allert "hidden gems" made me chuckle.

    • @AitsZ
      @AitsZ  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I am glad I made you chuckle, it is my goal to have viewers enjoy the videos one way or another. As I mentioned in the video Red Alert was "my" Hidden Gem as I passed on most CC games during their launch, and I have learned that they are an integral part of the RTS picture. So go ahead and give me heck for that. As for the Settlers, not sure where you reside but it was not nearly as popular in North America as it was in Europe and other parts of the world. So it can be classified as a hidden gem for North Americans. Although as I mentioned in the vid I don't really the RTS aspects stick out as people claim it has, at least for the first 2 instalments. I kind of see them more related to city builders. Anyways, Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Seeing you mention some of these games reminded me of another you may want to check out. Look into Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim. I dont really consider it an RTS myself but it technically qualified as one by the standards of this video.

    • @AitsZ
      @AitsZ  ปีที่แล้ว

      I LOVE MAJESTY! One of my favorite games! But I don't think it should be in this RTS timeline and you are right some of the games mentioned at least the settlers 1 and 2 and Z really in my opinion should not have been classified as an RTS. It was more to cover as I didn't really know the series and it was recommended by a few on this channel. Although the settlers 3 does begin to show more as an RTS according to what I hear. I will probably cover Majesty along with the city builders Timeline in my opinion as the units are not controlled in real time by the player. Very happy to see that there are people interested in Majesty, in my opinion its a hidden Gem in whatever genre it is classified under. Thanks for watching and the suggestion!

  • @olnnn
    @olnnn ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The later settlers games, starting with the The Settlers 3 do feature rts-style control over combat. 3 and 4 are still heavily resource management focused but are a bit more of a hybrid of RTS and city builder than the first two due to this. The later games are more typical RTS as far as I know though I don't know much about those really as I felt they abandoned most of the uniqueness of the series with the 5th game.
    Another interesting very early RTS is War Wind, and it's sequel. It's a kinda fantasy setting like warcraft but had some different takes things but seems to have gotten mostly overshadowed by the bigger guys.
    I feel maybe homeworld also deserved a mention in the main series given it's 3D space nature.

    • @AitsZ
      @AitsZ  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have been told that Settlers 3 is where they have implemented more combat RTS attributes. I believe I do have the settlers 3 on the list to be covered on this hidden gem RTS timeline. Should be exciting to see that change when I play it in depth. Thanks for the suggestions , Homeworld is for sure on my list to cover on this timeline, even though you are right it is more of mainline RTS. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      Also a bit of trip down memory lane. I had completely forgotten about Z. The Robot humor in that game was really amusing. Watching a lot of these videos is like that as haven't thought about some of the games in years.
      Part of it is just so much has come out since then and not enough time or money to play them all. The irony is back then it seems like I had a lot more free time but not enough money. So I would often look for games that were long or had lots of replay like Civilizations, Sim City, Warcraft 3 Modded maps, Tribes, Elder Scrolls Daggerfall, and etc. And then when MMORPGs came our I dived into them as great time sinks between big releases.
      But now I have more money but feels like don't have the times as even though I easily have spent hundreds of hours over the years in Minecraft, Factorio, Kerbel Space Program, Rimworld, 7D2D, City Skylines, ONI, and a few others that I keep drifting back to even though I've sunk hundreds to thousand of hours into, like my 1,200 hours in KSP as i kept returning to it with feature updates during early access and modded content over course of years. Were as more story or linear focus games it's one and done.
      Back in my youth it felt more like was jumping to the next new game after beating the current one if i could afford and didn't have something then I fell back on the long haul games. But now playing with friends online we tend to keep cycling back to the same old stuff over and over.
      Part of it I think is likely because everything was new back then so there was a lot of new mechanics being thrown around. Where as now a days it's more about polishing the established mechanics or trying to combine them in new ways, like how RPG element of leveling is added to so many things. Heck a lot of "new genres" aren't really now. Like I recall playing "MOBA" back when it was just a mod map for WC3 called DOTA. And before that it was AOS, DOTA was just more popular iteration of the game type. Or the Battle Royal explosion wasn't new when PubG did it, just popularized it and then Fortnite made it really sky rocket to main stream.
      This results in people finding games that have a their preferred mix of features. Like with Colony builders have been around a while and I've played a few and each only held my interest for a short while as it wasn't quite what I wanted. Then along came RimWorld which easily became my favorite. While I miss the 3D element that many others have being able to dig underground, the other features it has with carevans, raiding other locations, easy of UI(so many CB have horrible UI), and most of all mod support. As such don't even really look at any of the others, though Dwarf Fortress finally getting a graphical update so it's not an ANSII has be considering giving it another try. Just don't know where I'd get the time though. :P

    The capture point can favor a more tactical oriented game but the rest of the game mechanics matter. I'd agree that Z and CoH are more Real Time-Tactical games than RTS. The original Dawn of War I think is a good example of an RTS that does capture points well. You still have the tech up and base building typical of RTS with your income coming from captured points.
    The problem the RTS genre has had is the pull between RTS and RTT as some prefer Tactical while others prefer Strategy. But developers and players haven't bothered to even acknowledge there is a difference unlike the blend between city builder and RTS that some games do and you get players arguing which it should be classified under. That tech up and build up that as you put it many players considered bogging down the game is the strategy. Having to choose between spending early resources on a rush or shoot up to better tech and out class the enemy. Basically having to balance resources cost for development and defense against recon and offense in true strategic form. While others just wanna micro the units in combat and duke it out without worrying about how it's all funded.
    It pretty much comes down to if you like being the logistics commander over seeing the whole battle field and larger war effort. Or if you like being down in the trenches fighting the front line action. Those who prefer to plan for the long game of seeing their strategy pay off lean towards the strategic side. While those who like it when their quick reflexes and positioning earn them the win tend to lean towards Tactical side of things.

    • @AitsZ
      @AitsZ  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting. I did not realize how much I enjoyed the capture points, until I played both Company of Heroes and Z. I did not enjoy when dawn of war was first released, hence why I have not fully played Dawn of War. I am really excited to play as I will be covering on this timeline and I hear nothing but good things about it. Yea I think RTS RTT at times seems to be one in the same now a days, even though the have there slight differences. I do want to play some more RTT as I have always leaned towards the RTS, I am sure I will have s different opinion about it now. I noticed you support the channel a lot with your in great in depth comments on the videos. I just want to say Thank you and it is highly appreciated!

    • @PyroMancer2k
      @PyroMancer2k ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@AitsZ Well for RTT the capture point system tends to work better as it often frees up the need to build bases and manage resource gathers which I think it why RTT focused games tend to use it.
      As for DoW it had several Stand Alone Expansions each often adding more factions to the game with DoW:SoulStorm being the last and had like 9 playable factions. Though DoW:Dark Crusade was the one I remember the most as it was first to include the Tau which I played in the Table Top 40K at local gaming store during that time. I also liked that later expansions had world map and you could play the campaign as any of the playable factions. Made for great replay-ability.
      I recall the devs mentioning at the time the reason they went with Capture points was to better reflect the TableTop game which typically would give you objectives to capture and hold so it wasn't just a straight kill fest. But also the IP doesn't really have a good worker unit that would make sense on the battlefield.
      Overall I think Capture Points can be fine in an RTS to help offset some of the micro when dealing with peons and such. It also forces you to become more vulnerable as you have to spread out and maintain control over a larger area rather than strip mining a deposit as fast as possible with the optimal ratio of peons. Since the CP never run out maintaining control of them is important. However I feel a lot of devs see them as an excuse to cut back on the depth of strategic base building in terms of tech trees, building upgrades/prereqs, and so on.
      The reason I specifically point out the first DoW is because the sequels depart from RTS. While the first game did have base building and teching up, DoW2 was more like RTT/ARPG. The SP had you collecting items to equip your leader units which effected the squad performance. And MP was more like RTT/MOBA where you could only field a couple units and there was 3 lanes to attack the enemy base which was just fixed at the other end of the map. As for DoW3 I can't comment on it as the reviews were so bad I didn't even give it a try.
      Don't get me wrong I didn't mind the RTT/ARPG part of SP Campaign in DoW2 as I do enjoy a good ARPG like Diablo, Torchlight, Path of Exile, and etc. Heck there is even a 40K ARPG Called 40K:Inquisitor Martyr which I've had a lot of fun playing. But ultimately DoW2 wasn't an RTS so it didn't quite scratch that itch.
      As for more RTT like games, not all of them having resource gathering in mission. While I can't recall the name of the First RTT I played I do remember it quite well as graphics were 3D with physics and it had a sort of realism fantasy setting where you were either assigned a specific units for the mission or got to purchase them on a point buy system depending on the mission. There was no gaining more units during the mission and I remember the grenader type unit frequently being OP but also great source of amusement and frustration as a mis-throw could take out most of your own forces.
      It's easy to spot RTT when they don't include in battle resource management. Going back to 40K I'm a fan of Battlefleet Gothic games which I'd consider RTT as it all comes down to your tactical ability to win the fights. Though with how games mix and match features the lines can get blurry at times. Like I don't consider BFG a 4x because the campaign management outside of combat is pretty barebones and MP is entirely just pick fleet with point buy and fight it out. While games like Total War have a strong 4x setup while doing RTT for their combat so most see them as 4x. It's kinda like how a lot of games put in leveling and skill advancement systems these days even though they are not RPG games. It ends up mudding the waters for defining genres.

    Since they are not available on any digital platforms I would consider the "Battle for Middle-Earth" games hidden gems, and one of the best ones of the genre.
    Other hidden gems:
    - Universe at War: Earth Assault
    - Armies of Exigo
    - Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends
    - State of War: Warmonger
    - Grey Goo
    - Impossible Creatures

    A bit of topic ... I had a Atari 1040 STE 25 years plus ago. I had a Xenon/R-Type game ... however I can't remember the name of it. As far as I can remember you could scroll both left and right (horizontal) and also move up and down (vertical). I wonder if some one has played it an put on youtube. I suspect that I was ported to Amiga 1000/500 as well. I think intro was with a character that had one natural eye and the other was some kind of digital artificial eye. Does it ring any bell for anyone that read this. I was not that I common and poplar that other games of the same kind.

The beautiful concept art and the storyline is what got me to enjoy them, rather than using them for the actual purpose of teaching you how to play the game lol. If you were paying attention to the video I mentioned Red Alert " was a hidden gem for me". Growing up I was more of a warcraft, Starcraft and AOE's RTS player. But I have come to enjoy the CC series more now that I have delved into it more. Yes it uses the same game engine, but red alert has slight enhancements. Given that they were released a year a part from each other it would make sense to use it rather than building one from scratch( which would have taken a lot more time). Thanks for the comment.

      Am I missing something here, I am pretty what I was mostly showing was the remaster of the 2nd Settlers titled the Settlers 10th anniversary? And to my knowledge nothing changed to much aside from mostly graphics and UI? I could very well be wrong. I will be honest I did not show too much of the Settlers 1 as I just had a difficult time with it overall as mentioned in the vid. But I also am told that the 1 and 2 are fairly similar. Thanks for brining up your concern.
