I'm a paramedic, I've responded to few fatalities that could have been prevented, but just wearing a seat belt.

You'd think that seatbelts would be common sense, but no.
Then again, "common sense" is a misnomer. It's not common at all.

I'm a tyrant about seatbelts in my vehicle. My hands are in my lap, touching neither the wheel nor the shifter until everyone is belted up. My dad, especially, gets irritated about it, but I'd rather have him irritated than dead because I wasn't stubborn enough.

Not a first responser but a petrol station worker. You surprisingly see some screwed up stuff in my line of work. Three come to mind:
The first was an old man filling his tyres when he was hit by another old man who drove the wrong way in through the exit road. The man was smeared in a kneeling position under a Jaguar. His legs were sandpapered to the bone. Stayed conscious throughout it all. Ambulance and police turned up and the Jag driver surrendered his licence there and then. The injured man forgave him. He died a week later of infections after having both legs amputated. I had to wash his legs away with a hose.
Second was at my current job on the nightshift. Heard a crash. Looked to the roundabout we're next to and a car hit a tree in the roundabout, hard. The drivers head was on the bonnet (hood), the steering wheel was in his chest, the dash was in his stomach and the still running engine had been blasted through the firewall and liquidised his legs. He was still alive. It took 3 hours to get him out and they had to cut his car into seven pieces to free him. He was drunk and he lived after hitting the tree doing 80. Lost his legs.
The last one. Two months later, same roundabout, same tree. Brakes failed doing 75. This driver in his 50's was not wearing a seat belt and was launched through the windscreen and into another tree, breaking his back. Here is the list: no seat belt, drunk, high, never had a licence, no tax, no MOT (safety test) on the car for years, no insurance and had been banned from driving for several years. The car was also reported stolen in a domestic incident. He lived and will never walk again.
One more: leaving my work, getting up to speed on a 50mph road. VROOM! A BMW flies past, easily doing 140. 2 miles down the road at the next roundabout, we spot the BMW again, IN a tree over s petrol station. He lost control, hit the guard rail side on, launched the car into an 80 foot barrel roll and landed in a tree 30 off the ground. Driver and passenger, not a scratch.
But here is where it gets stupid. He was a car salesman, the car belongs to the dealership, the woman was the new secretary at the dealership and not his wife. When I pulled up, they were both climbing out of the wreck and getting dressed at the same time. We stayed to give witness statements and he began crying about how screwed he was. Going to loose his job, his wife is going to leave him, take the kids and house, plus the £80,000 bill for the car. Not a care for the three teenage girls he nearly killed. Selfish prat.

I'm no first responder, but I did witness an attempt at insurance fraud a couple years ago back when me and my parents were staying with a family friend (long story so don't ask)
I was outside getting some air and acting out a wrestling scenario in my head when I see this car in a turning lane stop when a car was behind them; and it was a sudden stop, too. Thankfully, the car behind them stopped just in time to keep from hitting the one in front, but then it started to back INTO THE CAR BEHIND IT and actually hit it. I stood there thinking "wtf???"
The driver in the first car stepped out to assess the "damage", and the guy behind him was going off on him like "Dude what the fuck were you thinking??? What is wrong with you???" stuff like that, and this guy looks at the angry man and says "What's wrong with me? What's wrong with YOU??? You're the one who ran into me!"
They argued back and forth until the scammer called the cops to file a report, all the while I saw the whole thing go down and this guy had no clue. The other guy saw me, and I gave him the "Don't say anything" look and he understood. Sure enough, a cruiser who was just down the road showed up and started asking questions. The scammer went on about how the other guy just drove into him and almost dented his car and had started insulting him. THAT was when I spoke up and said "Excuse me, I saw the whole thing."
The scammer saw me and went pale. He knew he'd been caught. I gave my testimony, and the cop looked at the scammer and demanded an explanation. Rather than give one like any sanely sane person would, this guy jumped into his car and sped off. When the cop left, the other guy came up, thanked me, and gave me $150 as a thank you. I was shocked and told him he didn't have to do that, but he insisted so I took it. As for the scammer? He got caught by police and was arrested. I saw on the news (which was one of the only channels the family friend had on the telly) that this guy was wanted for many sketchy things, including insurance fraud. Don't remember his name, but I do know me and my folks made the most out of the reward I got :)

    • @Allantitan

I’m in the Navy. A buddy of mine and I were performing maintenance on a ballistic hatch on the deck with a smaller access scuttle in the middle. This ballistic hatch is easily over 800lbs with a counter weight to open it. The smaller access scuttle was pinned open (which needed to be closed when doing this maintenance, he just neglected to close it) when he was checking the latches on the ballistic hatch to make sure they worked properly. Not knowing it, he undid all the latches, causing the counterweight to engage and lift the entire thing. He was towards the back, behind the access scuttle, due to it opening (slowly) he fell back, thrown to the wall behind him and the access scuttle crushed his skull, right above the left eye. Luckily I was there to the side to forcefully shut the hatch and close the latches. When I went to check on him, his glasses were bent to hell and was bleeding from both nostrils, but looked fine. It wasn’t until he turned towards me that I saw there was a 4-5 inch gash on his forehead, creating a perfect window for me to see into his brain. He asked me if it was bad, I responded “ehh, you’ll be fine. Maybe a couple stitches” to keep him calm. It wasn’t a deep puncture, maybe an inch, inch and a half deep. He was surprisingly fine and conscious. After making sure his brain wasn’t badly damaged by asking him questions, he almost seemed unaffected, oblivious to the severity of the situation. I stuck my head out and told the first sailor I saw to go get medical. Went back down to him and he was now standing up and walking around. I ordered him to sit back down. I feared that he may have a seizure or lose consciousness. Medical arrived, and he walked himself to the infirmary. Due to it being a medical emergency, the Executive Officer of my ship was there. He asked me what happened, I told him and he told me that I did a good job for keeping calm, that he was lucky that I was there, and actually have me a fist bump. That was about half a year ago and my buddy is doing just fine. No brain damage, broken orbital bone, some scarring and his eye is still a little messed up, but he’s in good spirits. One of the toughest guys I know.

5:54 You are right, since he suffered no trauma besides the burns it was probably best to drive him to the hospital instead of just waiting 10 minutes for an ambulance to arrive. Burns need to be treated in a hospital as fast as possible, the more time that passes the more likely that person is to go into shock or get dehydration.
8:00 he probably sliced a major artery, didn't know he did, and then eventually died from bloodloss

    • @Morna777
      @Morna777 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

True but ambulance crews can treat you en route. They will also radio ahead to the hospital to have whatever team needs to be activated standing by. Of Course it depends on how close the hospital is.

15:13 Something somewhat similar happened in France a few years ago, but waaaay worse. A guy fell out of the 6th floor of a building and impaled himself butt first on a pole down in the street. The poor dude didn't die on the spot. The firefighters had to cut down the pole to get him to the ER. He eventually passed away later because of the injuries

Not paramedic or emt, but one of the worst things I’ve ever seen was when my neighbors lost their house to a massive fire. They had many exotic pets, and it was sad to see the husband of the family crying over the charred remains of his beloved 8 foot long alligator who was 4 feet away from escaping the flames… I still have ptsd to smells of burning, and it’s been a few months

    Story 27:
PSA - If anything ever gets stuck in your rectum for any reason, go to the hospital or call an ambulance. Do not try removing it yourself. The intestinal lining is fragile and fatal if torn because of bleeding or getting poisoned by your fecal matter getting into your bloodstream.

    • @jaredcrabb

    I have the opposite
I read a kids book once I don’t think I have it anymore where this one girl wore a helmet all the time like everywhere all the time ever and got hit with a hammer at the end of the book but took no damage and then she said something along the lines of and that’s why I always wear a helmet

My mom's cousin died in a motorcycle crash when I was a year old. I don't know the details, just that he hit a stop sign and wasn't wearing a helmet. She made me promise to never get on a motorcycle and I've stayed true to it, and I'll continue to do so. The idea of having no protection around me mixed with how stupid Texas drivers are just makes me think that it's a death wish. I already do stupid things that could kill me, I'm not adding that to the list.
    Rest in peace, Damon 🩵

I used to drive a tow truck. I worked a collision where 5 teenagers in a stolen Caddilac got into a head-on with a cement mixer. They were so messed up that the paramedics got sick trying to deal with them and I had to help remove the bodies. It took the medical examiner 3 days to figure out which parts went to which bodies. It was 5 days after the wreck before he identified the last kid. We found one of the heads 50 yards from the remains of the car.

I have extremely low blood pressure. Story 19 is why, as dumb as it sounds, after I had successfully quit smoking, I decided to start again. Id rather have the extra difficulty breathing, but know Im gonna stay conscious, over not knowing when Im gonna split my head open (tobacco increases blood pressure, extra salt alone isnt enough).

The fisrstnone reminds me of an internship I did. We had to cleanup a theater that showed old movies. I would be wiping a soda stun off the chair next to the wall and I would come across a wad of gum. Painted over. I told the manager. He thanked me.
Who the hell is ignorant enough to paint over gum?
I also went to clean the bathrooms and as this was last year I was a lady and was identified easily as one. The other guy who saw me diddnt know what to say. He just stared as I left the men’s room after wiping the toilet handles and faucets. This was a part of a community program and we had a leader with us who wasn’t bothered by it and was like ‘what’s wrong with her cleaning the bathroom’. (The theater was closed while we cleaned up)
Not a hospital story but it is a theater one.
But I still don’t get the painting over old gum.

Man, number 28 reminds me of something dumb that happened in my family. I was at work when the office paged me to tell me I had a phone call. It was my sister, calling from the hospital in tears and panic. Our dad had been mowing the lawn on the riding mower and, in his infinite wisdom, decided to check the blades while it was still on. My poor sister (who had only just gotten her learner's permit) drove him to the hospital along with the severed tip.
