You might have to treat yourself to a portable toilet until you get the plumbing going. When you're working through the summer months you'll want to stay hydrated. You can fix up the room with the microwave, put some drinks and snacks in the fridge, maybe a six-pack of suds. And get a comfortable camp chair and table set up where the view is nice so you can stop for lunch and survey the neighborhood.
Electrical system management will be very important to identify places of high current draw. A lot of old, antiquated, unnecessary electrical equipment in that place. Like refrigerated water fountains.
Jason, you are the first person in my life who said, "Here's a toilet brush. That's nice." It didn't sound like sarcasm either. I have not seen a single roach or rat. That is way better!!
Best New Channel Award ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I think we're all going to learn new things with this project ....but mostly how to fearlessly press forward. Well Done getting the Power on 🤩
I work in property management and we have a couple electricians we use.. find a property management company that's local and uses local vendors, see if they can give you some names & numbers. Also, look up the municipal codes for your city, county, and state codes so you don't have to rely on the ignorance of others. Also, tradesman have to be licensed, and their licenses are public records. HVAC, plumbers, electricians, and general contractors should be 100% ok with you asking for their licenses and their liability insurance BEFORE starting any work. And get quotes in writing. Make sure they mention any hidden costs that could come up during work, ie. roof replacement could have underlying rotten wood that can't be seen until old shingles are removed. (I know his bldg has a flat roof, it's just an example, folks). And finally, I can see you're learning so much already!! It's awesome!
One project to do with someone else is to find out what each breaker covers and then label it. That way you won't have things running that shouldn't be.
Appreciate your candidness about the downs and pitfalls of a project like this. So many people will only highlight the ups and make it seem like renovation is a breeze.
Get a cheap label maker and start labeling your light switches and breakers as you learn what they do. I had to do this in a house I had once with about ten switches by each door into one room with five doors.
In its current with minimal dressing, this place would make the perfect location to shoot an analog horror film. Just perfect. Invite a writer and a film crew!
This is so exciting to watch and better than anything on HGTV! Keep your sense of humor and keep learning from the mistakes. You are doing a great job and your channel is growing so fast! Have you thought about creating an Amazon wish list so your subscribers can contribute? So many of us wish we lived nearby so we could help you clean! Looking forward to your next episode 😊
I'm along for the ride on this. I'm impressed with your knowledge and your ability to figure out things you may not know. Or simply ask your viewers! You're doing great on the house and on the videos. I hope your viewership continues to grow.
The scammer should be revealed to spare other people from losing their money. How nice that the lights are on in every room! The doggies steal the show.
Box fans and dehumidifiers will be your best friend to really dry the place out. It might be worth getting a quote from a commercial electrician and piping outfit to check your mechanical room. If you can get in touch with the superintendent of the school district, they should be able to tell you who worked on /installed the equipment. Its going to be expensive, but for the right reasons.
I was going to suggest contacting someone from the school to see if he could get some history especially if he could find the maintenance person. Also a commercial electrician and plumber could be better than a residential one. You might have to convince them by telling them it used to be a commercial property. I think this job is definitely bigger than a residential plumber and electrician might want to handle. Congratulations on getting the electricity turned on!
@@watchere I do and don’t agree with the inspector, the fire alarm has been turned off for a while and it probably can cause a fire, you could’ve gotten a local fire company to come out and check it before turning on the power

Not sure if yours is the same. You're going to have quite the power bill if you leave all those lights on. It adds up FAST in a large building like that. Congratulations on getting power and finding a shop vac & toilet brush.
I don't think there is anything wrong with that fire alarm system. It looks in place. It is probably better than home systems. I would put it back up and use it.
It's getting harder and harder to find honest people who truly want to work! So glad you got your power on!! Every time you flipped breakers on I kept thinking of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation with the meters going crazy when the Christmas lights finally came on!! Hopefully getting the water turned on won't be so hard!!
You’re going to pay a fortune in electricity!! I certainly turn off at breaker the areas you won’t be using or working in for awhile. Awesome you do have power. One step at a time!!!
It’s wonderful that you have electricity now. As things were coming on, the thing that was going through my head was the movie Christmas Vacation. The part when all of the Christmas lights on the house go on and the electricity meter is spinning wildly, until part of the town has a black out. Then the person at the electric company flips a switch for the nuclear power. If the closet automatic lights are always on you can just tape the switch down until you can get the ambient humidity down enough to plane the door to fit again. I’m really enjoying watching.
And Yason said let there be light 😊 and ahhhhhhh there is lights❤ well after a whole lot of b.s. because that is the way it works, sadly. But i absolutely love this property and believe you are blessed to have it
Toilet brush goes next to toilet. Another project done. Lol! Very exciting! Look for a knob in the big cooler. Clear and clean one room at a time. It will give you a different perspective.
The first inspector was correct, if you have a fire alarm device installed it has to work. You didn't have to remove them, just needed to turn the FACP on.
lots of conflicting inspectors. The property has been rezoned to single family residence, since its private and no longer publicly accessible the second inspector says it doesnt matter.
@@watchere I work in the fire alarm industry and have for 6 years. It doesn't matter what the zoning is of the structure is. The only reason I could see them saying it doesn't matter is if it does not have occupancy currently. Once you're done with construction and have to get an inspection by the fire department, you're probably going to hear that they need to be removed.
FOR THE FRIDGE TRY LIFTING THAT TOP PANEL ACROSS THE TOP FOR SWITCHES OR THE BOTTOM PANEL ACROSS THE BOTTOM, try lifting it upward or pulling it downward. 17:28 mark, that strip across the whole top.
Also look really hard inside. I mean really look in every crevice and corner. But I thought the same thing. I figured the bottom panel. But the top could be just as likely.
Industrial fridges like the one you have are designed to be always on. But if you turn it off then it will not stay cold so unless you want to pay the cost of running 24/7 you should try selling it you could get at least a couple grand or more for it.
"Probably should unplug [drinking fountain]. I don't know if anyone is using this." haha, you crack me up. Leave it on in case the ghosts are using it. lol Love you man. Keep at it.

Sub and liking from all my TH-cam accounts. A suggestion, do not move the phone around as much as you swivel your head and look. Also, buy an actual camera to record. It will improve your video quality and reduce motion blur. It has been obvious you record from your phone due to the motion blur and waviness of the video as you spin around. It was confirmed in the reflection on that fridge door. Love what you’re doing. Wish I lived in that area to volunteer and help. Looks painful and fun!!!!
Yup! When i first started i was like, I shouldnt spend needless money on camera equipment. Still recording on a phone i should try to slow down more! I need to remind myself! Thank you! And if you like pain this stuff is fun hahaha.
@@watchere You might want to see what type of heater it is. It could be electric or gas. It could also be hydronic or steam too running off the boiler in the basement too. It could also be a heat pump which combines heat and A/C and runs the A/C backwards for heat. I would leave it OFF until you know how it works and whether it is connected to anything (such as the boiler pipes or furnace in the basement). If it uses the hydronic pipes for its heat source, it is possibly trying to pump dry or blow from no source. Some schools uses hydronic or steam boiler systems for heating with radiators or fans from radiant heat exchangers. Some also ran cold water through the heating pipes with a chiller for air conditioning in the summer months too.
@@watchere for noisy, likely just age and neglect although they weren't necessarily the quietest of things. They are common in schools, apartment buildings, and commercial buildings near doors where extra heat was needed to combat the opening doors in winter and to melt snow brought in on boots. So not a priority for maintenance and a target for kids to kick or hit. Might just be something loose and vibrating. For your case the simplest thing at the moment is likely just to keep the power cut to it and worry about it if you really need it. You likely won't have the door constantly opening and closing the way a schools or commercial building does so regular heating might be enough (if there is any in that area).
Oh wow. Love the electricity on!!! So happy for you! Sorry about the scammer electrician. Unbelievable. Can’t wait for more progress!!! Your a great narrator! 😊😊😊
Since you have the power on, you should pick up some cheap box fans from the big box cheap fan store and put them into the rooms with ceiling/water damage to help pull the moisture out of the walls.
Last year I had a city inspector try to fail one of our properties for fire caulking around ceiling protrusions during a duplex conversion. He looked at the product for a second, had no idea what it was, didn't put any effort into confirming what it was, and said he didn't think it was fire rated. It absolutely was. Some of these guys don't care and don't have a clue.
I might make a separate video outlining car stuff! Im a huge rambler though so could go on about cars forever! haha Thanks for the comment and support!
I know you don't want to tell us who the scammer is but you really should write a review and post it to yelp or where-ever. Stuff like that creates so much turmoil, and I'm sorry it happened. It's too bad you got terrible advice from that inspector. For a place that big, you may need to install sprinklers. Not sure what the building codes would be in your area, but I guess we'll find out soon enough. Glad the power is on and I really enjoyed that stroll through the basement. Thanks for the video, and for all of your hard work.
OH no terrible electricians! It's amazing to me how those kinds of people stay in business as long as they do. So sorry you needed to deal with that. I owned a 5000sq ft preschool in a commercial building but I was so glad a friend had a friend that was a professional electrician. We still had some hurdles because the system was from the 80's and it was hard to get some parts required, but it was all accomplished. I also took some courses on fire code requirements so they couldn't scam me, because some of those guys are bad as well. They try to up sell you on extinguishers, emergency lighting etc. that were not required. Glad you are getting things done.
It is exciting to have the power turned on. Yeah - Cross that off the list! I'd still be cautious and go room by room and make sure everything was turned off and unplugged, just to be safe. Water is next. Sorry you got the run around in the beginning of the electrical inspections.
and from now, there were the pleasures of bills for electricity...for the "wet" walls i have two suggestions, first open that damn windows unless it's raining...let the air circulate and carry some humidity away...cheaper than running a dehumidifier, second get some dry, old firewood and store it beside the walls, it will suck the humidity, without any further costs... beside the water i guess next step will be installing a working and storage place and make sure you do not get some "guests" you do not want....
I would highly recommend Hiller Electric, Heating/Air, Plumbing. They hold their employees accountable and are really good about keeping records on your repairs for anything that may go wrong in the future. I've called them years later and they would recall previous repairs done to the home. Hope this helps!
Poor guy, I bought a county owned probate sale house which wasn’t occupied for two years. I asked PG&E to restore the power and didn’t get that much requirements😓
I lived in the house from 1973 to 1975. I recall there being a pink bathroom and closets with drawers for our clothes. The bedroom had around four to six beds, and there was a separate blue bathroom for the boys on the other side.
Yes, I actually stop myself all the time. I'll walk by a pile of debris and think i need to sweet this.. Then i have to stop and say I HAVE to work on other things more important, this will be here later!
So glad the electrical worked out. An inspector once told me, learn the code. Learn the parts you're looking to get inspected. Tell the inspector exactly what you're looking for. Never get upset, but don't be afraid to push your point or ask for an explanation. Finally....I'll bet that new meter is spinning like a router. I'm jealous of that commercial fridge but running it while it's empty....Better alert your local power provider hehehehehe. Good luck. Be safe and thanks for your time.
As far as the fridge.... It might be running continuously to get it down to temp inside. Or it may be out of coolant.... Probably the plug is accessible from behind the bottom vent cover, along the front near floor level. OH, IMPORTANT. If you wanna leave the fridge running, Put a few gallon-jugs of water in there. Air costs more to cool than solids, and will help stop the fridge from over-cycling or short-cycling trying to cool nothing.
Another pair of hands and a pair of cheap walkie talkies so you can chase down what breaker controls what and you can eliminate what you don't want powered. I look forward to watching your progress

I'm sure its been pointed out before, but fresh labels on the panel box once things start to look cleaner. Also a log book/filing cabinet would help you tremendously keep track of everything and when it was done. Also, at least for the time being, wear a ventilator mask while your downstairs. Who knows what your breathing in there.

I’m so glad you already have power! That makes a big difference!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Great! Lighting makes all the difference!
At 15:06 the sub-panel in the hallway the bottom left breaker has been tripped.
At 19:04 it's just an electric heater, common in commercial buildings
GOOD EYE!! i'll go back and check it! Also is there a reason why its so noisy?! I might have to open it up and see
@@watchere You might want to see what type of heater it is.
A great improvement after removing the cubic panels, excellent work on short videos.❤❤🎉
Oh wow. Love the electricity on!!! So happy for you! Sorry about the scammer electrician. Unbelievable. Can’t wait for more progress!!! Your a great narrator! 😊😊😊
Oh boy what a runaround from the inspectors. Every step forward is forward.
Dude, this is amazing, huge opportunities, it's amazing how throwing some light into a building really gives it some life back.
When you were ready to flip the first switch dang a commercial UGH!
It was indeed a massive bad boy switch to flip!
Hang in there! We are all cheering you on!
All these flipping of electrical box switches give me Jurasic Park vibes
Hooray for power!
Sounds frustrating, i feel like they need to train these guys better
@@watchere Good work on the filming in this episode, really loving the series.
Yeahhhh good for you now water is next thing the fun begins 😃🌻
I hope so!
lol I didn't recognize you in the thumbnail with the new haircut. I was like "Who's this random guy in my TH-cam feed."
LOL i hardly recognize myself they cut it too short!
And I thought I was bad at maths… “Dishwasher installed in 2000 so it’s 14 yrs old already” Um… 🙄🤣🤣
turns out im real bad at maths
Love the series so far. From one car guy to another, gonna need a car update video.
I might make a separate video outlining car stuff! Im a huge rambler though so could go on about cars forever! haha Thanks for the comment and support!
@@watchere sounds good and no problem!
"Installed in 2000, so 14 years old already" 😂😂😂😂😂😂 We all do that!
im living in 2014 lol
Congrats on getting electricity on!
Thank you!
It's good to have power
It is so hard to get contractors out to get quotes. For whatever reason, roofers were the only group to all show up for me.
There might be some controls under the panel on the bottom of the fridge and freezer.
It varies alot by person and who you call that day its a huge hassle to reinstate power apparently
On the cooler that you cannot find an on/off switch for the fans....check behind the kickplate at the floor.
I will thanks!
I lived in the house from 1973 to 1975. I recall there being a pink bathroom and closets with drawers for our clothes. The bedroom had around four to six beds, and there was a separate blue bathroom for the boys on the other side.
Glad you have electricity. Enjoying 😂 watching you discover new things about your place. My OCD just wants to grab a broom and start sweeping.😂😂 😂
Thanks for the tips!
I look forward to watching your progress
get your windows opened and let the air flow through the building that will also help drying out the walls and ceilings
This house is FREAKING YUUUUGGGGGEE!! Just buying lightbulbs for all the fixtures would be so expensive! Jason, how do you get thru the day without anxiety overload? Plus you have a regular job, right? Let's get these subscribers up so you can switch to this full time.
Jen/Chrissy Sometimes I just think to myself.... This is a future Jason problem..... then when the future comes i think... Damn you past jason!!!!
May want to convert at some point to LED. Takes less power.
