    carbon cowboys conversations
Where’s The Beef in the COVID-19 World?
COVID-19 has caused enormous disruption in the conventional beef supply chain of North America. Large meat packing houses have been forced to shut down due to the spread of the coronavirus among employees. The chickens, cattle, pigs and poultry that were scheduled to be processed are stuck outside the packing houses - and untold millions of them will have to be killed and buried causing horrendous misery for the farmers.
On the flip side, the farmers who are practicing regenerative grazing, and who are selling directly to their customers (or who are just in the past month selling directly to their customers) are posting incredible sales figures, 300-1000% higher than this same time last year. Many are selling out of their meats months ahead of schedule.
Why are they selling out while the grocery stores nearby still have plenty of meat? Health. Their customers know that many of the people who died from COVID-19 had pre-existing conditions. People are coming to realize that eating healthy food makes them healthier, and more resilient to COVID-19.
Could these regenerative farmers be laying the groundwork for the future of the meat supply chain, with more resilience due to more distributed and local production?
Join director Peter Byck as Ag industry veterans Allen Williams, Gabe Brown and Will Harris join filmmaker Peter Byck in a deep dive, to find out, where, truly, is the beef?

These gentlemen have really changed my life and the way I run my farm. I have owned cattle since I got a USDA youth loan my senior year of high school. I started selling directly to consumers about three years ago. I ran across a video of Allen Williams explaining regenerative grazing last year then got hooked on watching him and Gabe Brown videos. I started moving my herd daily on my small farm in Mississippi can already see a difference and can't wait to see the long term affects. I really appreciate what y'all do for the farmer.

I love the thought of rural life coming alive again. It is true in somethings that old is better. Like old homes, old furniture and old ways. Pride in one’s work to be the best, please come back.

My husband and I are farm kids who''ve been living in the city for a long time in a subdivision. Now we built a new house out on an island in the San Juans - PNW. I found a Gabe video just as we were putting our garden in. It's postage stamp sized which makes us sheepish trying to grow things. But this regenerative movement I'm learning about isn't about size or scale. It is about healthy soil and healthy bodies. Because this video with the 4 of you is current after months of COVID19 shut down, fear, control, politics, despair and hopelessness all around us.....at the end of this video I sat with my head in my hands and just sobbed. And my heart filled with hope again for us and for our world, for our future - personally and collectively. Blessings to all. Thank you so much. What a gift. What a lift. What a light you shine. Light always puts out darkness.

I’ve shared all of the Carbon Cowboy movies with friends and family. Our nation’s well being begins with the soil and the people who understand it. I wish every schoolchild could see some of these movies. They’ve been fed so many lies and half truths about farmers and cows; the people need to see and hear the truth from the root of the tree.
    Off my soapbox now. 😊

Thank God this idea is finally spreading! I first heard about this years ago when researching organic foods and 6:15 found Joel Salatin and Polyface Farm in Swoop Virginia who has been doing this for a long time. And I realized why in the world would a farmer ever have to buy fertilizer when it’s coming out of the back of a cow? Healthy soil is the answers! Amen!

My wife and I moved out to the country. I soon learned that living in the city is much healthier. The industrial agriculture model has destroyed the countryside. I am very close to a confined hog operation. The fields are tilled and fed glyphosate and neonictitiods. Just imagine being surrounded by regenerative farms! Paradise compared to this.

I’m in the desert of West Texas. Just got dairy goats last year and have been walking them around to graze and setting up day long paddocks on my 3 acre homestead. I’ve lived here 30 years and I’m already seeing more biodiversity and grasses coming back after our recent rains. Thank you for all that yall are doing. We are looking to buy more property and plan to incorporate rotational grazing there as well.

Thanks so much for this video. Have you looked at the output of meat per ha in the regenerative model with stacked enterprizes etc vs industrial models of corn and soy feeding animals in CAFO's.
And factoring in allocated and unallocated ('hidden / denied') costs to the models.

34:46 nutritional pyramid; also meat played up and beans played down.
36:40 tools; subsidies regulations, (later added commoditization).
subsidize soil health, polyculultures, and decrease industrialization.
42:35 go back to think of farms as ecosystems. By thinking of farms as food factories, the reductive mindset has brought about the demise of our health & resilience.

Because Trump invoked the Defence Protection Act which forced/ enabled slaughterhouses to stay open irrespective of the health of its employees. It meant that slaughterhouses became exempt from any safety guidelines around Covid that might have protected workers. It didn’t matter how many got sick in a plant the plant would stay open and it would just hire more staff to replace to people who had got sick.
