AD&D, our level 2 party encountered a flock of griffins as we were traveling on the merchant roadside heading to the next town. We all got merc'd.
Edited: This was due to the random encounter table. Even our DM was wondering if the module maker was a sadist and wanted to recon it.

I think the best kind of encounters are the ones that make your character's backstory feel like it is have an influence on the campaign no matter if it's combat or roleplay

I agree, however when you have a person with "Main Character Syndrome" (MCS) also in the group, it makes the encounter feel worthless. That happened to me a couple weeks ago when the main encounter was aimed toward my back story of my character. The person with MCS wouldn't even let my character engage in the encounter and when I finally did, and defused the situation, they got pissy and outright attacked and almost caused a TPK. The one person that was specifically aimed at my backstory was killed first. All the person did was say, "Well I didn't like them so they had to die." I looked at the DM, packed my stuff up and left the group right then.

@bigc1966 yeah there's pros and cons but I personally believe that MCS Players are the minority in my opinion but that's just my personal experience

@@douglaspope-gz1eq I agree with you they are a minority however this person has been known to make sure that their character is always noticed, so to speak. I told the DM that i would not be in any game that person was in. Really bad thing is that they are both good friends with each other. I don’t see myself playing with them anymore.

A Hareington visits the dock yards. Her rabbit ears pick up on a questionable cargo. Those same ears allow her to pick a lock at a bonus. How does she feel about that roasted rabbit for dinner? Some of my characters like to hang out in odd corners. Perhaps invisible, to pick up random encounters. Or employ urchins to hang out for me.

I edit or filter my random tables so they are appropriate for the setting. This seems intuitive. 👍🏼

This is a great topic with lots of good advice. The evocative art that accompanies the discussion is really cool. Where did the artwork come from? Is this AI art?

      Definitely is AI art
