      One design philosophy is weapon mastery is in zero subclasses, only base classes, they experimented with subclass mastery but it was genuinely too OP
      So battlesmith won't have it, but, you can still get it with a general feat, so there's that

      110%! Boosting skill checks at lvl 20 is not an upgrade at all.
      Spells replace most skill checks as you get to high lvl play.
      Artificers have a niche roll, and having your items protect your saving throws is a class identity.
      Also noted that flash of genius can’t boost initiative rolls anymore, as they only count vs “failed” checks and saves.

    I think this is mostly good changes, but please don't remove Tool Expertise I've been playing an Armorer Artificer for 3 years now and I have used Tool Expertise so many times in every session to not only succeed really difficult checks and help my party succeed but also the role play options of being so good with your tools that you can do the most impressive things is some of the most fun I've ever had!
    I really like the added ability to convert magic items to spell slots but please don't remove Tools Expertise

    • @MrFenr1z
      @MrFenr1z 4 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      they kinda have to get rid of it. tool proficiency now gives you advantage on skill checks and you don't roll the tool, you roll a skill that correlates with that tool/action. so maybe pick skill expert as a feat and be more viable all around.

    • @codebracker
      @codebracker 3 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +4

      @MrFenr1z that's not true at all? Tools still have proficiencues, the advantage only applies if you are using a tool at the same time as a skill (and have profociency on both)

    • @codebracker
      @codebracker 3 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      @jacobhatcher5409 i think the best solution would be that you can pick any one of the 5 potions, or roll a d20 for a random stronger elixir

    • @Blackdracko7
      @Blackdracko7 3 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      If they want to keep the randomness which i get, let alchemists drain the magic of the elixir to recover spell slots. Alchemists are the most spell dependent artificer subclass. I can imagine how a turn without a spell slot goes with all the other subclasses. The Alchemist just... Casts a cantrip and not even a specially potent one. If they want them to be the support class they need to improve that... Make them able to create AoE potions for example.

    For the love of god remove the randomness of the Alchemist Elixirs. It's the main concept of an alchemist and they have zero control. "What do you do?" Alchemist looks up from their various vials, "I'm a master of the ethers, shaper chemist of the magical sciences. I am an Alchemist!" The young boy being rescued by the party looks at the alchemist with burgeoning hero worship, "what kind of potions can you make?!" The light fades from the alchemists eyes as he shrugs and mumbles, "Who knows I guess we'll see in the morning. No matter how long I practice the arcane art the results remain random and nonsensical."

    Love the changes, I think we may want some more flexibility in the language for the Armor Artificers armor models. For example I have a kobold obsessed with becoming a real dragon so he builds himself a dragon suit, the models there are more geared towards specific ideas, perhaps I could reflavor the infiltrator for it. But it would be nice if there were some allowances for reflavoring included within those models for example the dreadnought could empower the claws and teeth as slashing/piercing damage instead of a bludgeoning flail.

      The Artillerist in the UA ups their cannon damage from 2d8 to 3d8 at 9th, then gets a second cannon at 15th, making the total 6d8. That seems solid. The Steel Defender's scaling is a lot less impressive, at least in combat (it seems to get your Proficiency bonus on all ability checks, which is interesting outside combat), though it does now attack with your Spell Attack bonus, but then you get Extra Attack as a Battlesmith so it can't be too vastly better or there are some issues...

It is still a nerf, sure, but firearms are far different than how they were in the old rules and ranged weapon damage has largely fallen out of favor in general in 2024 rules. It's mechanically not as big of a deal as it seems at first glance, especially in comparison to Battlesmith not having Weapon Masteries. The subclasses that should have guns for their flavor still have guns though, so I'm not really too bummed out there either. It makes sense in the context of the larger design changes of the game.

    Gave the PDF a read and there's some genuinely good changes for the subclasses (lookin at you "not having to pick a type of Eldritch Cannon anymore"), but nearly everything about the core class features feels much worse. To me, the whole core conceit of the class is that they are the fantasy equivalent of a youtube maker channel, who is able to craft unique solutions to problems through their own cleverness and skill. By getting rid of Tool Expertise, changing Magical Tinkering to "Summon Disposable Junk," removing the crafting buffs from Magic Item Adept, and turning Infusions into just more loot for the Loot Table instead of expanding or improving the options, you've removed all of the core flavor from the Artificer and turned them into just a generally worse version of every other class.

    • @TerminalDevastation
      @TerminalDevastation 9 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +3

      Magical Tinkering is a side grade. Both are very niche case use in different ways. Old one was basically free cantrip, new is "have a bunch of item you'll use once or twice the whole campaign ready." Old was slightly more creative, new is slightly more useful.
      The crafting buffs from Magic Item adept seem to have been moved to subclasses and specialized... which does mean it's worse, but I think it works better for the theming.
      Overall, I've mixed feelings... I think the changes actually make Artificer seem MORE of a crafting class... but less of a class than can craft things no one else can. I think this incarnation needs like a "mod magic item feature" to get back their "I can craft things you can't" feeling.

    Based on what I head him say, the level 20 feature seems kind of “meh” now. I really liked the huge bonus to saving throws the old capstone gave. If the new one is limited to ability checks, it seems a lot less useful, especially in combat. If you already have expertise in your favorite skills, more bonuses to ability checks don’t seem very useful since most ability checks tend to be pass/fail. Beating a DC by 15 is usually just as good as beating it by 1 (unless I’ve missed something important)

    The reality was that the player was trying to circumvent the time it takes to don armor…this tactic happened after our party kept being ambushed in the Chultan wilderness.
    The presence of an Armorer Artififer at that time would have provided a mechanical (heh) justification for the method.

      As far as I've seen it seems they removed expertise from tools in general, like it doesn't exist anymore.
      I think they intend to use it as if you do an ability check that requires an skill and a tool you:
      -Use the skill modifiers.
      -If you have proficiency in the skill AND the tool you make the check with advantage.
      Example, a Rogue can't have expertise in Thieve's tools anymore, but it can in Sleight of hand.
      If you have proficiency in thieves tools and sleight of hand, AND expertise in this last one, you roll to disarm a lock with advatnage and using the sleight of hand modifiers (expertise included)

I hate that they can't use a Manual of Golems now until level 17 and that they can no longer use infusions as a spell casting focus. Their spell list needs to be expanded as well to include such spells as Tenser's Floating Disk, Find Traps, Locate Object, Nystul's Magic Aura, Stinking Cloud, and Teleportation Circle to name a few.

    I'm so excited for the alchemist artificer!! I have a character that started learning alchemy during a campaign and has been making potions (sometimes poorly) so this will be a perfect subclass for him.

    For the Infusion feat, I hope they can still infuse items with repeating shot or returning weapon...those are great and useful infusions.

      Feature, not feat. You got my hopes up that we can get infusions as a feat going forward, only to let me down hard.
      Repeating Shot and Returning Weapon are still available... only now starting at level 6 for this UA version.

    The Alchemist I always think for some reason about a Delicious in Dungeon idea of a Alchemist-Chef.
    Spells: Elementalism is okay, but I prefer Shape Water (Making safe water/cover/Falling Ice) and Mold Earth (Cover or a Stone igloo for the night)
    Armorer: Knight Saber...GO!

    I like playing an artificer. The million dollar issue, in my experience, for how awesome you're going to feel playing an artificer as the party progresses through the levels is: How free and easy is your DM with magic items and gold? In a stingy DM's game, you're going to feel great. In a generous DM's game, what you're able to craft is just going to feel meh. I don't know that there's any way to account for this. Nothing in this UA does. I guess my advice is talk to your DM before choosing to play an artificer.

    Armorer is my favorite subclass.
    I don’t like how your armor doesn’t have 4 spots for infusions/magic items. I enjoyed the customization. Mind sharpener was the freaking coolest.
    I am also going to miss tool expertise. We already could make tools in the old class so this adds nothing.

    If you buy a magic item formula from a shop in order to craft one normally, does it get added to your Artificer plans? Like a wizard scribing spells to their spellbook?

    My problem with alchemist is that it's half random
    Either remove the random and just let us pick all the elixirs
    Or instead go full random and let us either pick a healing potion or roll on a d20 wild magic table of potions

    Artificers are already in Forgotten Realms and other fantasy settings etc... People think they don't belong. But they are wrong.
    The Armorer and Battle Smith. Think Armor of Horror or Flying Swords and all sorts of constructs and Golems.
    The Alchemist easiest one, who makes all those potions??? and The Artillerist just think bent wands shape of guns and cannons. Wand of Magic Missiles just bent it to a hand gun shape. You got yourself a Artillerist weapon.

    Experimental elixir is a fun ability, but I don’t like that you can’t control it unless you happen to roll a six on the dice. And the self option that used to be there was an incredibly flavorful and fun choice. Would it be possible to just return alter self to the table, and let the players always choose what the elixir does? The randomness could be a suggestion for Flavor many of the people I’ve played with over the last few years have complained about their alchemists being experts in alchemy, but not being able to control their lecture feature

  • @StormScale89

    Since no artificer subclass gets a weapon mastery, Armorer and Battlesmith should be able to replace an attack with a cantrip. This ability is given to third casters (eldritch knight) and full casters (valor bard) and I see no reason to not let a half-caster get the same thing. Additionally, for the armorer, since the weapon comes with the armor, if you have a +1 suit of armor, does your weapon get a +1 as well? And since it is also you spell casting focus does it give a +1 to your spells?

  • @nonamegiven202
    @nonamegiven202 5 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    Well i will have opinions already just looking at this, so be a scared!
    by that i mean like 4 things, remove the RNG from Experimental Elixir, let you produce one extra elixir per spell level with it, give Battlesmith one of those fancy "X weapon as Spellcasting Focus", and by FAR the most important thing change Battlesmith's name to something starting with A.
