Genius Tips to Build a Strong DND Backstory That’ll Hook Your DM and Wow Your Entire RPG Party
Wow, 100% AI generated content, from the art to the text to the voices. Real high effort stuff here buddy.
I play an elf. This video does hit at the heart of how I perceive and try to play the idea of elves and their unique way of being. I do however also play an elf that straddles the line of understanding and empathizing with shorter lived races and also being this concept of centuries of wisdom elf. The way and reason I did this is that I had my elf born in a booming metropolitan trade city, one that has been that way since even my elf was born. It’s a coastal city. My elf spent their first 200 years of life living in this city and being part of their merchant family’s successful business, its face even. As such they were really part of the fast paced fabric of the city and their world at large. This city didn’t have a huge elf population and my elf and their family were a minority in that regard. So yeah, my elf gained a decent leaning towards a perception of time that aligns more with the shorter lived races. This became a stark contrast by the time the party meets them 37 years later, as a scholar who has left their hometown and is studying elven culture in the elf built and dominated city in the northern wintery lands. While other elves are arguing to outlast their troubles, my character and the party are pushing for a more proactive way. It becomes a fun and fascinating discussion. That doesn’t mean my character isn’t the voice of caution though. My character is not only and elf but is tempered as a historian and scholar and so the idea of gathering knowledge and understanding and wisdom is deeply ingrained too. Of course, that doesn’t mean I don’t play them as falling into that trap, that agelessness that elves can take for granted. It’s part of how their past decisions led to the death of their fiancé and one they still regret. For a moment they forgot being an elf doesn’t guarantee you live to have that potential long life span. Sometimes death comes anyway. Quite the wake up call. It’s a fun line to straddle, this agelessness and grounded in time line, but my fellow players tell me I am pulling off what I wish and I give a sense of history but humbleness to my character. Honestly, that’s all I could ask for. Thank you for the video! It serves as good inspiration!
This is an AI used for podcast creation thaught on PDFs
Lol, I recognize these guys
So, I'm 8 minutes in and this has not at all fulfilled or hinted at fuilfilling the title. At best this has been a decently narated ad read for some other prodcut you are expecting me to buy. I just saw your like to dislike ratio for this video and I'm guessing that even though you just mentioned monsters, I've reached the point where your listeners/viewers have clicked off and decided you are wasting our time.
I made a vladimir putin class and race combo. I could tame bears and vodka gave me cold resistance
Is this entire video AI generated???
Yes. Working on getting quality up... paulbellow.com/hire/
This is such good timing as I'm literally creating a goblin gnome right now
By default, standards must already exist in a D&D environment since all coins are of the same value. This implies that various kingdoms, territories, etc, agreed that trade coins must be the same metal weights. Coinage on D&D should remain intact to prevent going down a rabbit hole. The things that should be changing value would be goods and items. Example during blockades, wars, extreme travel conditions or famine, there would be a stark increase in labor wages, transport, and of course obtaining construction material. Additionally if conflict is looming, then arms and armor prices would rise with demand and scarcity. Imagine how much items would cost in a smaller borderland settlement compared to a larger village or city. Trade routes through a city would offer more items to choose from, compared to that village at the edge of wilderness. Unless there are resources nearby for circular trade, such an outpost would have little to no trade caravans. Trying to weave numistatics and coine echange rates into adventure would complicate most combat based campaigns. So the best thing to do, in times of chaos is to raise mercenary (the player's) fees to complete missions, and modify the 'Sears catalog' of DnD magic items, arms and armor with table increases based on factors like transport distance and such scarcity.
This one is HUGE. A DM/GM creates a campaign and then tries to describe it and how it will be played, etc. Some put a LOT of time and effort explaining what the characters will be experiencing and who is most suited and what they will do to help the players, while other's post very little about that. When you have players, they will all have their different motivations, style of play, interpretations, etc. I've been playing VTT D&D 5e for almost 1.5 years now, on and off. You would be AMAZED how many players join for 2 sessions and then just disappear with 0 feedback to the DM or players. They take the path of least resistance and move on and try again. Honestly, I've joined a few campaigns for 2 sessions and after the sessions I bounce. BUT... I ALWAYS provide the DM with feedback / a sincere message as to why I'm bouncing. Do you know... NOT 1 DM responded. So, that's probably why most players don't even bother. DM's and Players alike are looking for something that works for their style of play. Finding that... well... it can be as difficult as finding a life partner. They more expectations you have, the more difficult it will be to find the ideal fit. Good advice is to have a VERY extensive 1 on 1 with the DM before joining. Find out about how the DM runs things, what their long term goal is for the campaign, what the other players are like and then talk about what you are looking for. The more you do upfront, the better chance for success.
It's kinda silly that age has such little impact in D&D. One of my biggest pet-peves. It's even worse for long lived races. . . Like, you're telling me that my 500 year old elf has done nothing in their life that has given them knowledge, skills, or wisdom? Heck, it's even worse if you go by Forgotten Realms lore, where their meditation-sleep (reverie) is actually them connecting with past lives. . . Which means their past lives were all useless too.
A truly exceptional video.
This video is AI trash
Now this… I love. Currently playing an elf. Thanks for the insight and putting words to how I want to play
You are so welcome!
When 5E first came out I used the fiend warlock as a template for my halfling Alchemist. Pep-Zee greenbottle and his carnival wagon alchemy shop he used his healer feat concoctions to heal other and his potion thrower (a looks like a shot gun and acts as a rod of the pact keeper the ammo is eldritch blast) He has the personality mix of Elmer Fude, the Nutty professor, and a wester snake oil salesman. The DM was shocked when I keep improving the wagon even adding a half second for for more living quarters in it I am 3 foot tall why would I need 8 foot sealings. he left a human sized couch and if he sat in the balcony library it made him almost eye level of a human. I tose him into any caravan or festive my players get to.
Some glaring mistakes. If you use your action to cast cure wounds, you cannot use your bonus action to cast healing word. If you’re concentrating on a spell, there’s no concentration check for casting cure wounds. Well written and delivered, but that is irrelevant if you’re delivering incorrect info. I’ll check out a few more videos but I’m skeptical
Thanks for the honest feedback!
I've never wanted to play elves in DnD but this video makes me want to give it a try.
I am in Dragonlance playing a Kinder Divine Soul Sorcerer which learned his magic by listening to the crazy old traveling Wizard named Fizban the Fabulous and the Stage Illusionist and Arcane Trickster Alestar Wayland. Jest is his name short for Jestarous of Polanthous, Even though it Jest has never closier to Polanthous then the high clerist tower miles away. He saw the name Justadous of Polanthous Master of the Red Robes when he read Alsters Request to the Towers of High Sorcery. But anyway the way I play him is defiantly a defensive healer we are still running 2014 rules. The DM is a bit in shock using mainly cleric spells Bane and guiding bolt: a bit of magic initiate bard for viscous mockery and dissonant whispers: and a little sorcerer mind sliver, fire ball, tashas mind whip, and synaptic static. I totally abuse Twin spell and Quicken to pull stunts few can I will gladly burn spell slots for more sorcery point. When I use bane and mind sliver lower saves and bane silvery barbs, and synaptic static to counter hits and Tashs mind whip fire ball and web to control the battle field. My DM was shocked that I contained a Dragon for 4 round by me self. Mindwhip mad him use a turn to only move bane and synaptic static to counter its attacks and other tricks it got frustrated and left.
Great story. Thanks for sharing!
Sounds a lot like "do a session zero before you start"
Yup. :) We need to do a video on that concept maybe... hrm...
It's so wild that I recognised the voices as AI generated, because I've listened to them before (before even noticing what channel this video was from). It's clean and crisp, but the 'man' and 'woman' (2 AI's without gender) play off of eachother in such a seamless way that it gives away that this isn't a real conversation. Despite that, it's really really insightful. I'm taking notes.
Thanks for the feedback!
Honestly, the first time I heard these 2 voices together, I thought they had the best podcast voices I've ever heard. When I found out they were AI, I was mildly disappointed, but they are SO good and like you said, integrate well together and are enjoyable to listen to. I would love to listen to books orated by either or both.
Nice video, like a lot of the art in the vid too, need to grab some of those for reference images.
Thanks. You can make your own with LitRPG Adventures Workshop or I have a Patreon too... www.patreon.com/paulbellowlitrpgreads
Very insightful, most of my characters have deen half elves, so i guess they would be somewhere inbetween brash humans or insightful humans and tendancies of very deepthinking elves. Ive been playing around with ideas of 1/8-3/4 elf ancestery characters and inbetween. Lol What are your thoughts about how half elves with varying levels of elvish ancestry?
It would depend on which half raised them? Nurture over nature? Good question!
@litrpgadventures6902 that's a fair point. Nature vs nurture definitely play a part in that.
I played an artificer in my last campaign and after we killed a dragon there was a darkness related sickness/curse in the next town so i used my cut of the hoard to buy minions to colect plants and make magic medicine but was so much that we negotiated a building and could pay like months of pay so we founded my artificer shop where i could do potions and alquemy in little time and after we killed the dark spirit and some downtime we founded a shop that sostained itself with some skilled npcs we founded and we could go and say "stop everything you are doing and help with this" and a lot of people would help make some specific uncommon or rare magic item that really really helped in plot stuff and downtime was more interesting in general
Nice. Thanks for sharing the story!
As a long time D&D lover, and recent psychotherapist, I use RPGs in recreation therapy to help people process and work through life experiences. This was a great article. I am forwarding to my players.

This gives me a lot to think about. I’m working on a campain in which the players are working with authorities to try to take down a magical mafia

Very cool. Like Bungo Stray Dogs? They aren't "magical" per se, but they are gifted, which is like Magical. Sounds cool. D&D 5e 2024?
This is quality material!

Alignments are very important for roleplaying, character growth/decay, and storytelling. It is disappointing that it has fallen out of favor in 5e.
AI TRASH, down vote this tripe
Tripe? That a snipe or swipe?
What's weird about. AI is when you listen to it it's just word salad. Throws out tons of options but never zeros in on anything. Never actually gets to the point.
omg this is and AI generated podcast...
holy shit it is, i put it on and was listening to it in the background. AI is destroying the internet.
The irony of the message "good actual communication is important" while having voices that are not communicating tell us why communication matters is jarring
Other things you can do that i've done: I'm older, (explanation, not excuse) - So i use it to PC-check my work, make sure i don't have anything non-inclusive or other subtle social faux pas that have come from our changing society. - check for plot holes. give it all the beats of your story, and ask it to poke holes in it. - check encounter balance. describe the encounter, party, class spread, levels, and major magical items that might affect an encounter (social, exploration, or combat. all of it works) - review your DM notes, and ask you 10 questions it thinks a player might ask you. I've found a number of times, this is quite sure to hit at least 2 things, and my players love that i'm just ready on the spot with an answer. A lot of the time this also serves as the "describe for me..." type prompts to get the creativity flowing, it'll ask something and you go "crap, that's a good point, now -i- want that answer..." and you create it. - if you use VTTs to play, use it to convert your web site text to html tables for journals and dm notes. I do this more than -anything- for foundry. I mostly back PDFs over implemented Foundry Modules, because often times they get a single version update and thanks to ... well, i'll step off the soap box, "the landscape is constantly changing in ampersand land" and the modules get left behind. I also find i like to customize them for my table. buff things, nerf things. etc. and its easier to just make them myself, and only what i need. So using it to convert things for Importer modules, journal html, etc, even just giving it a massive blob of text and saying "read this and tell me the key details, and things i need to dive deeper into for nuance" is helpful for making your session running notes. (Not a replacement for reading modules but just distilling it for your notes to jog memory on what you _did_ already read. TL;DR, what you said in the vid is key. Don't let it be your creativity, let it be your inspiration to BE creative. The smaller the task the better the results. Don't "Describe this city's districts." Have it give options of things that you might find in one district, in one shop in that district, and the shop owner is an NPC you need to incorporate. more details, less task for output, it will let the final result be more you than GPT, and you can still feel (mostly) proud of what you create while not being stuck in the doldrums.
The Coldfire Trikogy
Good one!
Is this narrated by AI?
Yes.
Most important thing you need to know: Out of all the invocations that let you cast a spell you don't have with one of your precious Pact Magic slots, there is only one worth taking: Sculptor of Flesh. Polymorph is such a good spell that even using one of your two (maximum four) Pact Slots is still a good deal.

Chat gpt and voice synth AI. This is a joke.
ChatGPT and Voice Synth AI walk into a bar... The jokes write themselves?
I'm part of a group, boardgames, right now "Hero Quest", so not RPGs, yet, but the concept of players interactions, situation/problem = let's talk about how to resolve/survive, keeping it cool, is the same. I say that because we have 1 player who is usualy totaly fine to interact with in a game session, but now he has sabotaged the game several times, and sometimes heroes have died, several times. He's like "naah, it'll be fine, what could possibly go wrong", consequences are not important, as it seems. Now, he was fired "True Lies" style, though he doesn't know yet, it's not official to him yet, but everyone else knows. Problem here now is, this seems to have left a kinda stink in the group, at least another one might leave the group, because he doesn't seem to like how we handeld the situation, even though he wants the other guy gone as well. Don't know, there might be more to this than just that, but the group right now is splitting apart, as it seems.
Ouch that sucks! Hope you can work it out!
@litrpgadventures6902 Well, he's gone, but funny thing, he clearly didn't wanna leave, thought this is a joke & then it's not his fault. To be precise, he had the balls to say it was "our" fault, we were not strong enough to survive, we were not fast enough to keep up with him, and he did things because otherwise he would get bored. The balls, such ego... 😂
I really haven't ever seen it interpreted the way I always have. I started playing AD&D when it was important. The only thing lawful or chaotic ment to me was predictable or not. Lawful only ment a strict adherence to your own code of ethics. A Lawful good character could very easily break the law if it ment adherence to their own code of justice for instance. Many wouldn't but it also wouldn't be alinment breaking if they did for instance. Just my 2 cents. Great video, much enjoyed it
Thanks! More to come.

lissen to? Have you been drinking, sir?
"Those are always fun." It's true, wasn't much of a discussion and rather a script. I think getting more into the article they are talking about and the dynamics of such encounters would have been great. Currently, it's not much of a deep dive, but they do mention a couple of good points. Just wish they wouldn't just list bullet points from the article, but would go deeper in the ideas the article mentioned.
It’s completely AI. Listen closely you can hear the occasional robotic pitch shift
