Looking at life’s chaos and choosing to see personal freedom and support others’ freedom versus seeing chaos and choosing to control others as a means to feel personal validation and force “unity” (selfishly) is a theme and battle that’s deeply woven into One Piece. The perceived villains are always forcing an idea of freedom that makes them feel powerful or safe, but the heroes we love are free in a way that doesn’t restrict others; also, they empower others to choose their own way.

What a legendary chapter to be the first you read after catching up! Funnily enough my first chapter after catching up was Kaido's introduction (ch. 795), so kind of a similar vibe to this one :)
the subtle nods to Loki's actual mythology in Loki's character design are going crazy for me - the doflamingo-esque wrapping on his eyes (which could be a nod to his imprisonment for killing baldur, with the snake secreting venom from its fangs onto his face) and the horns on his helmet being a little nod to the marvel design. Him embracing his destiny to destroy the world (fate and prophecy being a major component of mythologies as a whole, but also taking the spotlight in the giants' culture as well -- like a character that's always there but can't be moved until they decide to make that move themselves) (also the sun god's conflict will be put in centerplace for this arc, having him clash with Luffy-Joyboy when that happens). I'm curious as to whether Oda is gonna have separate characters for his offspring like Jormungandr and Fenrir, or will he make a three-transformation mythical zoan fruit for that representation. It also begs the question as to whether Oda brings back the multi-arc sagas like alabasta and east blue, or will he go the Egghead route and incorporate more of the real world happenings while Elbaph is going on, because that island is HUUUUUUUUUGE--! Either way, I can see why he's taking the two weeks to research and regroup, he's gonna pop off this arc!
I think Loki has the Jormungandr Fruit (World Serpent) • Jormungandr is a son of Loki that holds the world in place by wrapping itself around the world and biting its tail and when Jormungandr is released Ragnarok (the end of the world) begins. • When Jormungandr is released, it causes mighty waves, flooding the lands during Ragnarok. • In chapter 129, Dorry and Brogy mentioned the 'Greatest Serpent' as the only thing that can withstand their attack. How would they know unless they had tried? • The fruit that was passed on for generations in the Royal family is the Mythical Zoan Jormungandr. Loki stole the fruit cause he had ambitions to change the world for good by causing Ragnarok (the end of the world). • During Nolands flashback, in chapter 287 Kashigami the giant snake was called the 'God of Sun'. This could be the reason why Loki thinks he's the Sun God. • The Sun will bring forth a new dawn by ending the world of darkness. Maybe Loki wants to end the world of darkness and bring the Dawn, that's why he's calling himself the Sun God. • Loki and Snakes: In Norse mythology, Loki was punished by being bound in a cave to suffer snake venom dripping onto his face until Ragnarok. In the manga, Loki has his tongue out like a snake. • Loki the serpent stealing a forbidden fruit on the Adam Tree (Yggdrasil) kind of like the Serpent in the Garden of Eden. • In Norse Mythology, when Loki writhes in pain it causes earthquakes. In chapter 1130 Luffy hears a 'roar' noise and the bridge shakes. Maybe that was Loki suffering his punishment. • What we know for sure is; 1. The Devil Fruit is very powerful. 2. It has been in Elbaph for centuries. 3. It can cause the end of the world. 4. There's a Great Serpent in Elbaph that even Dorry and Broggy combined can't damage.
Absolutely amazing chapter! Finally getting to see Elbaph and the setting and design is all I could have hoped for. So excited to learn more about this place!
Tissine's work is always amazing. Watching them all hang in your background made me so jealous. Also, for some reason, I want to see a depiction of Katakuri done by Tissine so bad. He is one of my absolute favourite characters of all time.
I hope Loki won't be an antagonist but an ally. I love his design too much+ it would be great to have an ally who's a bit "crazy" . He and Luffy would make a great duo. It's weird but Loki appears very early in front of Luffy to be the antagonist (even Kaido was +10 chapters after Luffy arrived on Wano). Usually when Luffy interacts with the first inhabitant of the island, he turns out to be an ally. It's possible that what the giants say about Loki turns out to be false, that there's been a misunderstanding about the king's death and murder, and that the giants think it's Loki when in fact he's innocent. And let's not forget that there's a mysterious figure waiting for the SHs who's hostile/aggressive towards the crew, perhaps he's the king's real murderer and has managed to make the giants believe it's Loki. Loki's introduction is very similar to that of Zoro. What if Loki only wanted to destroy the world to bring dawn? I could well be wrong, and Loki is indeed a psychopath who must be stopped.
Interesting that when the giants were saying how Loki was evil and did all that stuff (allegedly) the newspaper was saying luffy is evil, killed vegapunk, etc. really sets up the “Loki might not be bad” theory
One thing I recently learnt is that Jormungandr is pronounced and spelled as Yorumungando in Japanese. Which contains Yoru which means night in japanese. The snake that the strawhat fought at the beginning of elbaph is called Hilmungardr which is contains hiru which means day. Therefore, the red line which is was called something along the lines of a bloody snake at some point is the one piece version of Jormungandr. By take down the red line, aka the yoru(night)mungandr, luffy will bring upon the dawn which will start ragnarok.
What I like about the giants reaction to their new bounties is that we get yet another viewpoint on bounty increases. For the monster trio it's obviously a reason to celebrate, while someone like Ussop gives us more of the perspective of someone that is afraid of the additional attention he might get from the marines etc. People looking at it from the outside like Coby or sakazuki are worried for a friend or furious respectively. And the giants gave me the impression that it's just more of a nuisance. They don't seem to really care about the number, but more about the fact that people are reminded they are still around. That makes it much harder to peacefully fight for life and death in their little garden.
fun fact. dorry and broggy's old bounties were 100 million. their updated ones are 1.8 billion. 1.8 billion is roughly the value of 100 million us dollars 100 years ago in the real world. which is how long dorry and broggy has been fighting, causing them to disappear from notoriety. so technically their bounties are the same. just adjusted for inflation.
The last 2 spreads and the info in this chapter got me SO excited and invested in Elbaf. Also Merphy I think you might have to do that stream for the chat to make predictions soon, if you count the Legoland section as the start of Elbaph we're about 5 chspters deep now
Right? LOL I definitely expect it’ll be either Nami or Sanji to be the ones to see the photo & put the pieces together as the biggest Vivi stans on the crew
Okay, hear me out, what if Loki didn't want to eat the devil fruit. what if Loki wanted to let the giant sword eat the devil fruit. objects can eat devil fruits, that has been established. it is time that this concept comes back. and idk I guess it would make sense for the sword to get like a mythical zoan that's involved in ragnarok. I think that would be super cool and something no one really suspects.
Inflation piece is real jumping from 100mil to 1.8bil is pretty damn nuts Vivi is definitely sending a message, it's a pretty nice callback to Alabasta and shows Vivi is thinking like the SH trying to send a message, (The crew in Elbaph wouldn't understand the message as they were never in Alabasta) we knew the newspaper would try and frame Luffy
I mean, seeing the true forms of the 5 elders and fighting them directly is probably the biggest "crime" in the verse. So I get it 😅 Also, yeah vivi is doing her own '3d2y' message. Very curious what she's trying to say
@@Weaponator18 Vivi's giving them a hint where she is because last we saw Morgans was getting tired of her yelling about his unethical big news practices. Her only reasonable option is to find the Straw Hats because they're among the only people willing and more importantly capable of protecting her. Don't forget Imu wants her and therefore going home or somewhere to hide is a significantly worse option and that various Cipher Pol agents are probably after her if Imu didn't straight up send some of the God's Knights on the job given Cipher Pol's previous failure with letting her escape.
I can already see what's going to happen. Loki will have a pack of dried meat in his pocket, Luffy will take it, and because it's a giant piece of dried meat and he's gonna become best buddies with Loki instantly. The rest is history.
i rarely feel this about new character introduction, but the introduction of loki is just something else. it feels so grand and menacing at the same time.
I would love to see Loki be correlated with Usopp at the beginning of the series as you can see trickster god = liar similarly. Have him be the version of Usopp that got framed for a lot of bad things and no one believed him because he was always pulling pranks and lying, but this time there was no luffy around to save him. Then Usopp can see himself in Loki and show Loki what it means to be a brave warrior of the sea.
One thing that's crazy I found out with the scale is how small even OARS would be in this place. Like, the bridge would definitely be small, but he's only four times larger than a giant. Makes me wonder just how big the being that held the sword could be. The only thing I could think of at the moment are those shadow beings from Thriller Bark who if I recalled towered over Thriller Bark itself. Those giant angels we saw that were just shadows in the past may be more to scale to something that actually exists or existed in the world and that is wild.
I think what makes me most excited is that we know how much Oda loves vikings, so he probably knows a lot of nordic mythology and to see the first referenes to it in Loki's introduction makes me really hopeful for what's to come. Can you believe we're finally finally on Elbaf :')
I love the comment section conversation that I've read: "- He's a lot slimmer, than we've seen him in Big Mom flashback. - Being chained to a tree changes people"
I had to dig up the comment, but I actually predicted something like what happened with Vivi's message - back in the video for chapter 1126, I pointed out that the only ones left on the Giant's ship were the post-Alabasta crew members and wondered what would happen if Vivi ran into them at this point in time. Sure, it's not exactly what happened, but it's close enough.
I am so sorry for missing your last five weeks of videos as I have been helping my mom with her battle with cancer I am so sorry to say that she has lost her battle ❤❤❤love your Aussie family friend John ❤❤❤
I think Vivi had Morgans print an "X" on Luffy's arm to show she's alive. And I think adding the detail that his arm is blurry but not the "X" is Oda hinting at that. I love Loki's design. I think the bandages on his eyes reference the myth of Loki being chained to a rock and having a snake drip venom into his eyes. It’s also reminiscent of Odin sacrificing his eye and then hanging himself for 9 days on the tree Yggdrasil for knowledge. Also, did we know Hajrudin was a prince of Elbaph? I would say that we now know that it's spelled Elbaph, not Elbaf. But the scans noted that this is Jump editorial and not something drawn by art himself.
Think about this similarly to how Groot said "i love you guys" at the end of GOTG3, Us understanding the X symbol on the arm means we are part of the OG crew as well before Robin and the others
This chapter was so great I loved it. Loki is awesome. Can’t wait to see what kind of chaos he bring. If we have to wait a couple weeks this is a great chapter to end off on.
LOKI looks so COOL oda desreves his 2 week rest after this. On a side note , the way loki is emprisoned in this chapter looks a lot like The punishment of loki in the norse mythology
I know there is a veraion in norse mythology where Loki's imprisonment is the result of him being framed for a murder he did not commit- and although im not sure if he will be the main villian, antagonist, or help of sorts- it would be interesting if Luffy and Loki got along similar to Katakuri. I am so HAPPY for this reveal!!! I was prepared to be disappointed similar to Vegapunk's reveal because i had 3 x the years of expectations for his reveal. But i was not expecting Loki and i love his design!!
I didn’t even think about all the overlap between doffy and Loki. The pose is similar, they both have concealed eyes, they both do weird tongue stuff, killed their dads, and both think they’re gods. Dear god, does that make Hajrudin the new Corazon? We need to protect him! I can’t do that again
Elbaph is only a day away from egghead (since they came to egghead after seeing the newspaper the day before). They hadn't arrived at elbaph yet after leaving egghead cause they got lost while drunk and fell asleep in whatever that mist was that rodo mentioned.
When I realised who had seen what Vivi has done I knew we were seeing a moment like what happened at Thriller Bark where Brook told Franky and Robin his story but they weren't with the Straw Hats to understand the significance of the story. I'm very curious as to how the crew will react this time around once all together and they see the hint.
One interesting parallel Oda raised in this chapter is the parallel between Loki and Vivi. Both Vivi and Loki's dads are dead. Both are royalty. Vivi loves her dad, Loki killed him. Vivi is loved by her country greatly, Loki is the Shame of Elbaf. Vivi is not powerful, Loki is Both of them found Luffy in a time of need. Vivi solved a crisis, Loki created one. (...) It could be that Loki is also faking his personality, just like Vivi did her Baroque Works persona. A fake death could also be happening, like Robin did with Igaram.
Vivi wasn't really weak back when she was introduced. She was comparable strength to the weaking trio, which I remind you at the time was half the straw hats.
@@IamGrimalkin compared to the average of the Grand Lines, she is not strong or maybe even average at all, especially when we compare the royal forces of Alabasta with any kingdom of similar size and relevance.
@@afeathereddinosaur I mean relative to her surroundings. Vivi one-shotted two named baroque works agents at the same time, which is better than any of her subordinates did. Also clearly early paradise is weaker than the rest of the grand line so it's not really work comparing. . It's still a fact that Vivi's team back in Whiskey Peak was part of why the Grand Line had such a fearsome reputation in the East Blue, and that was before she got stronger over the course of the arc. . Obviously right now Baroque works arc Vivi would be considered weak (we don't know how strong current Vivi is). But relative to the standards of the time, she wasn't weak.
@@IamGrimalkin yeah, and Loki is top of the world strong. I was trying to draw a brain vs brawn comparison, it's not a polar opposite deal, it's more of a "excellence" thing, what they're best at. That it was made together with various comparisons denoting opposition doesn't help this case, but that was my intent.
My wager is that Loki has the Surtur fruit. This would be a legendary fruit, it would be a "world-ender" character, AND it would be a _fire_ character, which would fit the idea of pretending to be a sun god, and also Loki's hair looks like flames.
So when it comes to how the Alabasta Crew got to Elbaph so much faster it's because Rodo's Crows picked up the Sunny and took it along. While sailing it might take a few days, flying it would likely take no time at all!
I apologize if you mentioned it and I missed it, but loki being chained up and destined to start ragnarok when he's unchained is a direct parallel to the norse story of fenrir the wolf
About the 5 first nakamas just finding out about the cross at the end of the arc, I thought it could come up naturally while fighting Loki. Considering he could have shape-shifting skills like in norse mythology, they'd remember how they dealt with Mr 2 in Alabasta and repeat it, making Robin bring up the photo in the newspaper
The Alabasta Squad were taken from the Giant Pirate's Ship by one of Rodo's crows and briught straight to Elbaf. So either they were closer to the island when taken or the crows can fly farther and faster
Tbh my take on the X mark was that Luffy was using his goofy powers to send a message himself the moment the photo was taken, but yours also makes sense
I think oda's putting Loki, the Norse god of mischief against GOD USOPP, our favorite Liar. Don't know when or how, but it just fits so great with his dream with being a great warrior of the sea
The giants stopped to look for thr missing strawhats, and ghe hird flew the sunny to elbaph, which would probably be faster than sailing and dealing with the currents in the new world
I could actually see Rodo taking some of Loki's power, even perhaps becoming the "second Loki" you said Doffy would be. His own crew compared him to Loki as well after all.
This may have already been pointed out so forgive me if I'm late to the party but concerning how fast Luffy and the others arrived at Elbaph, it was because Rodo's bird picked up the Sunny and carried it there faster than a ship could sail there
Notice how Robin says that the X mark seems familiar, because she was actually on the ship hiding when they put their arms up leaving alabasta
Oh that’s so good!

Tissine's work is always amazing. Watching them all hang in your background made me so jealous. Also, for some reason, I want to see a depiction of Katakuri done by Tissine so bad. He is one of my absolute favourite characters of all time.
i love how i can really feel your excitement got me all hyped up for this chapter all over again
Loki got the legendary frog frog fruit from his father, Harold from Shrek. Peak Oda foreshadowing
It would be hillarious if the "Legendary Devilfruit" that he took is the actual Gum Gum fruit.
@@TalesStahlshouldn't be possible according to Vegapunk
@@Bokunohero678 Vegapunk isn't omniscient, he only knows what's been written down.
Quite convenient that Big News Morgan used a picture with Luffy's left arm bared. I bet Vivi convinced him to do it.
Interesting that when the giants were saying how Loki was evil and did all that stuff (allegedly) the newspaper was saying luffy is evil, killed vegapunk, etc. really sets up the “Loki might not be bad” theory
Loki will be bad because his mythology dictates this!
@@DANCERcowyou don’t know about mythology about Loki
One thing I recently learnt is that Jormungandr is pronounced and spelled as Yorumungando in Japanese. Which contains Yoru which means night in japanese. The snake that the strawhat fought at the beginning of elbaph is called Hilmungardr which is contains hiru which means day. Therefore, the red line which is was called something along the lines of a bloody snake at some point is the one piece version of Jormungandr. By take down the red line, aka the yoru(night)mungandr, luffy will bring upon the dawn which will start ragnarok.
Chapter made me cry of happiness
I literally can't wait for Robin to meet Saul again 😅 would be such a reunion!
Love the hair style 😍
Gerd, woof!
fun fact. dorry and broggy's old bounties were 100 million. their updated ones are 1.8 billion.
Also Merphy I think you might have to do that stream for the chat to make predictions soon, if you count the Legoland section as the start of Elbaph we're about 5 chspters deep now
“Luffy will look at the newspaper just sitting there” 😂😂😂😂 Sure, Jan.
Right? LOL
I definitely expect it’ll be either Nami or Sanji to be the ones to see the photo & put the pieces together as the biggest Vivi stans on the crew
this was the chapter we were waiting for. it's almost overwhelming how much awesome is to come in this arc
that tree's falling and i can't wait
Okay, hear me out, what if Loki didn't want to eat the devil fruit. what if Loki wanted to let the giant sword eat the devil fruit. objects can eat devil fruits, that has been established. it is time that this concept comes back. and idk I guess it would make sense for the sword to get like a mythical zoan that's involved in ragnarok.
I think that would be super cool and something no one really suspects.
Inflation piece is real jumping from 100mil to 1.8bil is pretty damn nuts
Vivi is definitely sending a message, it's a pretty nice callback to Alabasta and shows Vivi is thinking like the SH trying to send a message, (The crew in Elbaph wouldn't understand the message as they were never in Alabasta) we knew the newspaper would try and frame Luffy
I mean, seeing the true forms of the 5 elders and fighting them directly is probably the biggest "crime" in the verse. So I get it 😅
Also, yeah vivi is doing her own '3d2y' message. Very curious what she's trying to say
It's actually pretty accurate to the real world
@@Weaponator18 Vivi's giving them a hint where she is because last we saw Morgans was getting tired of her yelling about his unethical big news practices.
It's actually completely accurate to the real world. 100 Million Yen a 100 years ago would be 1.8 Billion Yen today. Not at all exaggerated.
I recommend watching dawn & dusk, Merphy. Really helps with understanding things better.
This was such a good chpt. Glad this is what we got before the break!
I can't wait to hear his voice in the anime!
I like that and I get the vibe that he's possibly taking the blame for his father's death or something like that.
My first thought when I saw loki was “wow he is intense” my second thought was “TISSINE IS GOING TO DRAW THIS”
The way tissine depicted the chains above Loki makes them look like the black flame clouds awakened devil fruit users don.
Love it!
I'm sorry,
I hope you are doing alright and I know your mom is in a better place ❤
@@rupertgordonii6623 thank you for your kind words from the bottom of my heart ❤️ i
I totally missed that vivi put the X on the paper. I assumed Gear 5 brought out joy and made the X reappear. Super excited to journey elbaph together
Loki looks like he’s about to say “beasts all over the shop.. you’ll be one of them sooner or later”
Fun fact: the Loki from the marvel series LOKI, has an id number of L1130, the same as the chapter number.
Elbaph was one of the best looking islands design we've had in a while
Think about this similarly to how Groot said "i love you guys" at the end of GOTG3,
Us understanding the X symbol on the arm means we are part of the OG crew as well before Robin and the others
Oda has always loved playing with the scale of characters and environments, Elbaf is going to be so much fun for him to draw and us to enjoy.
I could not stop grinning like Doffy in the last few pages
The First time we know about elbaf was on December 1999, we have waited 25 years to see elbabh in action
This chapter was so great I loved it. Loki is awesome. Can’t wait to see what kind of chaos he bring. If we have to wait a couple weeks this is a great chapter to end off on.
I was waiting eagerly for this
Rodo never left Elbaf, his bird just found the Straw Hat's ship out at sea and brought it back for him like what happened to all of his other "dolls"
i love how small little garden is compared to elbaph
Now it makes sense why suddenly Elbaf becomes Elbaph. Legendary devil fruit mythical zoan model: Baphomet.
Merphy, ever since the you met up with Legend, I’m hearing more “We’re here” 😁
LOKI looks so COOL oda desreves his 2 week rest after this.
On a side note , the way loki is emprisoned in this chapter looks a lot like The punishment of loki in the norse mythology
Luffy felt loki crash out energy and said "my people, i must go find my people. "
Our break is not his break. Oda will spend these two weeks mapping out the Elbaph arc.
This chapter review felt like full unadulterated adhd lol
Elbaph is only a day away from egghead (since they came to egghead after seeing the newspaper the day before). They hadn't arrived at elbaph yet after leaving egghead cause they got lost while drunk and fell asleep in whatever that mist was that rodo mentioned.
When I realised who had seen what Vivi has done I knew we were seeing a moment like what happened at Thriller Bark where Brook told Franky and Robin his story but they weren't with the Straw Hats to understand the significance of the story.
I'm very curious as to how the crew will react this time around once all together and they see the hint.
I never go into details of manga but when i watch it on TH-cam i find a lot of new details that i missed 🙂
do note that only Robin say that the X is familiar, because she join right after the crew farewell to Vivi, the rest seems to be nonchalant about it
Yeah she would've seen them with Xs on their arms right after Alabasta but would have no clue about what it meant
Vivi is not powerful, Loki is
Both of them found Luffy in a time of need.
Vivi solved a crisis, Loki created one.
(...)
It could be that Loki is also faking his personality, just like Vivi did her Baroque Works persona.
Istg Loki's reveal is one of the best of the whole manga which is truly a testimony of Oda's genius
Last we saw Mingo, he was spread eagle in chains and laughing maniacally about tge end of the world as well
About the 5 first nakamas just finding out about the cross at the end of the arc, I thought it could come up naturally while fighting Loki.
I feel like Robin will show the newspaper immediately once they find Nami. She'll say we need to contact Vivi and get her to Elbaph somehow
I think oda's putting Loki, the Norse god of mischief against GOD USOPP, our favorite Liar.
Don't know when or how, but it just fits so great with his dream with being a great warrior of the sea
13:09 now I wanna see a artwork of Luffy and Loki doing the fusion dance from Dragon Ball and forming Lofy😆
I've seen a theory that I really like that Enel will show up this arc as a true god of thunder and bring ragnarok with him
This may have already been pointed out so forgive me if I'm late to the party but concerning how fast Luffy and the others arrived at Elbaph, it was because Rodo's bird picked up the Sunny and carried it there faster than a ship could sail there
I think for the elbaph, the title Sun God is the equivalent of Pirate King for the pirates... So they love calling themselves the Sun God
Roado was probably role playing as loki in his world that might be a hint for loki in some way
My only favorite part about Monday is this channel and one piece
Oda was at the LiveAction set..might be the reason for break...some souvenir will appear soon enough for us to see.
There Is a Marvel Loki Variant called L-1130 🤯
