Thanks very much for making this fantastic nostalgic trip around the best parts of the Black Country! We emigrated as 10 pound poms in 1969 to south west Sydney but my Father was fiercely proud of his heritage and he worked at the M.E.B. too. Anyhow, thanks again, Cheers!!

Two hundred yards from King's Arms was toll end youth club, opposite was tipton tavern, the pub you show
    As bombed.
It was a parachute mine that exploded at the time of a wedding reception, a lot of casualties,
The other bombs destroyed part of Aston Street.
The old crown, I heard you say it wasn't used for much, but, from 1975 up till 1979 upstairs was a twice a week northern soul disco,
Allways packed, and if you were in the bar downstairs you could see the ceiling bend allmost a foot with the beat, with upto 200 people above you.

17.25: The original offices in Toll End Road were those of 'Midland Electric Corporation for Power Distribution Ltd', whose power station at Ocker Hill was acquired by 'West Midlands Joint Electricity Authority' in 1927. The latter absorbed the authorised electricity undertakings of Wolverhampton Corp, Walsall Corp, West Bromwich Corp, Lichfield Corp, Cannock UDC, Chasetown & District Electricity Co Ltd, Trent Valley and High Peak Electricity Co Ltd.

I was born at the Waggon and Horses. I don't remember it though (the pub not by birth!). My Mom and Dad moved on when I was young to the Royal Oak at Dudley Port. My Mom told me I learned to walk while at the Waggon. One day, as a toddler, I climbed through a window and was running around on the roof. Customers and family were around the outside of the pub ready to catch me when I fell. I didn't fall but ran by the window where my Mom grabbed me!
I keep meaning to return. I could say that I'm probably the oldest person to be going there as all the above was about seventy years ago.

I was working for a German company in Darlaston in 1990. We had a German apprentice staying in some digs by the church - can't remember where exactly, but he used the crown & cushion regularly. Anyway, he decided he would watch the Germany Vs. England world cup semi final in there. A few of us English guys joined him.
The whole pub knew he was German and ribbed him throughout. But not a single bit of trouble.
What can I say - the result didn't go our way - but the atmosphere was fantastic and there were plenty of sore heads the next morning.
