I haven't seen you this excited in a long time. I bought the Rigol a good while back, and I couldn't agree with you more. This Old Country Engineer wishes you and yours an outstanding new year.
A good review of an excellent scope. I bought the DHO-814 a month ago and am so very happy and impressed. (I "upgraded" from a Pico DHO-2206B MSO...and got it for almost 50% less money!)
Thanks for your feedback. The guy I worked with got an early release sale as well. It is amazing that it replaces the Pico - even though that is an entry level Pico - the software is so nice.
The greatest thing about this DHO800 series (and previous Rigols too BTW) is you can get DHO804 on a sale for about $300 and then "upgrade" it for free by activating options. Mine now has 50M memory, 250MHz bandwidth and CAN triggering. Of course, if you have a business you won't do stuff like that (and I don't encourage you), but for a hobbyist this is such a great way to get a better instrument on a budget.
Thanks for this great feedback!! So, CAN is added as well? I would think that once a private individual purchases an item - they can do what they want with it. But of course, if you have a business and want to get it calibrated one day - the cal service would probably set it back to the functions that match the part number. I don't see a problem with a private party doing what they want - but I don't know if we on YT should show how to do it. Maybe it is OK...I'll have to ask Rigol how they feel about me doing this.
@@KissAnalog Yes, CAN is added as a part of "Automotive protocols" option. You can check the whole list of available options in the thread on EEVblog forum.
Great video, thanks. Lots of nice features which I really like and the display menus look quite well presented. It's handy you can lay this thing flat on the bench when videoing; I wonder how robust the stand is when your pressing the top of the touch screen with it stood upright? The VESA mounting would be ideal, but how does that impact the ventilation? Not a big fan of touchscreens, personally I prefer more physical buttons and dials. Touchscreens get dirty, are temperamental to use and often your finger is bigger than the button icon you're trying to select. A touchscreen scope with a pop out stylus (much like Samsung phones) would be a nice touch I think. Never use the keylock by the way. I expect its more used in teaching and certain industry environments, but this product is surely aimed at the home enthusiast market?
Thanks so much for your feedback! Yes - I really do like the form factor. The feet are much more stable than the earlier ones that are in front. I find those always popping back when I pull the scope forward. The feet in the rear don't do that and they don't fold back when pushing at the top. You will push the scope over (which you would have to do on purpose) before the feet collapse. But then once laying on its back - then you can push down and the feet will collapse:) I'm not a huge fan of touch screens either for all your reasons - especially when the screen is only 7", but so many others like this. They do work well - but when my lab is cold and my big fingers are trying to hit a small spot - it can be tricky - but with some care I was able to get it done;) I think these are made as robust as any other scope. So I can see schools - small businesses - and even labs at big companies that want to save money buying these.
Thanks! LOL - The other one I just did was for scopes under $400. I thought that was the range of a full featured deep memory scope. But just a bit higher in the ~$500 range there are these great 12 bit scopes.
I just picked one of these up as a Merry Christmas to me and up’d it to the DHO824! Perfect for my needs! Anyone else pickup on the irony of the “Small Sparrow” logo on the main board of a MiC product???
Thanks for asking - no I don't delete comments. I have only done this a few times in the years that I have been doing this on YT. Usually bots or one or two people that others asked me to delete.
LOL Rigol vs Siglent SDS 804X HD but you only have a 10 year old Siglent SDS 1202X (not even X-E) on hand. The actual 804X HD is obviously way beyond the Rigol, and you know that.
For one, you start your video talking about the importance of deep memory and sample rate. The Siglent easily beats the Rigol with that, especially after the trivial “upgrade”! Then you mention the Rigol discount, which obviously is because Rigol knows that they have a problem. But it turns out you don’t have the Siglent you mention in the title of the video. The Rigol is a very nice oscilloscope, don’t get me wrong, but instead of a comparison, you are just promoting it, and then Rigol even doesn’t let you keep it.
The Siglent SDS800x HD is a very pleasant oscilloscope to work with, offering many features and feeling very reliable. After watching numerous videos about Siglent and Rigol scopes, I’m happy with my decision to purchase the Siglent. In my opinion, it is indeed a better choice than the Rigol, both in terms of software and hardware.
@@Rick-hq5yg Agree. I've had both. Siglent 804x is a marked improvement over Rigol particularly in the interface. No longer feel like I'm using a interface from 1999
@ssspotsss Yes the Siglent has more memory as I said, but the Rigol still has 5M with 4 channels, so if you use all 4 channels - it is still good. The Keysight has 2M and costs 3x more. So, I think this is still great. The Rigol form factor and brand new interface is very nice and polished. The Rigol has a Waterfall function on the FFT and has SA type setup. This is amazing - especially in this price category. I also like the USB C power - the extra isolation is much appreciated. OK, so where does the Siglent match or beat the Rigol in any area - other than memory? As I said, it seems like the Siglent was a - hey lets' put 12 bit front end in our old scope - revamp (a little) the interface - and change the case to black plastic so we can keep up with Rigol. That's just how it feels to me - and maybe I am wrong. I'd love to hear from those with a Siglent to tell us the new features that it has over the old X-E (which I don't like as much as my older X - although I found a problem with the FFT that Siglent will not address) You are right - I have to return the Rigol - so it doesn't help me to support them over Siglent. I probably wont take another loaner as it is a pain to ship back and to keep the box around (where I don't have space). And then there's the stress of damaging it - as I can't afford to replace it. I try to be honest in all my reviews and I admit there is always human bias - even though we try to be neutral.
Thanks for your feedback! Great to hear. I'm very curious - have you used a Siglent before - specifically the FFT? How is this one improved? From the manual - it looks very much the same.f BTW, if you watch my videos where I show the FFT on the Siglent (the -X not the more budget friendly -XE). My Siglent has the 8" screen and I have also used the -XE with the 7" screen. The FFT operation takes some patience to get set up right. And there is a flaw in the firmware. The measurements do not change when I change my option from x10 to x1 probe. It only works correctly with the option and probe set to x1 (if I remember right). Siglent says that they don't support it anymore - because they replaced it with the -XE. I'm curious if the problem exist with the -XE? The multi-function knob is a pain (way too sensitive at times).
I haven’t used Siglent before, but the FFT on the SDS8000 is offering 2 Mpts compared to Rigol’s 1 Mpts. However, the Siglent lacks the waterfall viewing option. On the upside, it can highlight up to 10 prominent peaks in the FFT and display them in a table.
Yes the FFT on the Rigol is far improved. I did notice the 2 Mpts on the Siglent - but I don't know if this is actually useful at these frequency bands. I always thought 1 Mpts was awesome - but so many times I drop this down to get the right set up (BW vs samples). What do you think - has the 2 Mpts shown value?
Im waiting my rigol dho804, coming i 2 days, i cant wait. Do u have a new firmware on this one, just for info ? I want to know are somme of bugs are fixed or still not
Wow - sounds fun! I think there has been a number of updates since it came out - which is great to see a MFG support a new release like this. I think the latest release was back in November. I didn't update the one I showed here as it isn't mine and I need to return it, so I didn't want to mess with the firmware. I didn't see any problem - so maybe I just didn't use it enough. I'd love o have had time to use it - but when it is a loaner - I want to be careful so I don't end up having to buy it;)

Thanks for your feedback! But I am comparing it to the Siglent, so is it better than the Siglent? My pix all look to similar - I haven't jumped on the click bait titles/pix - but maybe I should?? Others using those antics have shot up fast - while I am growing slow and steady.
I recommend removing the Siglent SDS804x from your title since you weren't able to really do a comparison. Otherwise, good info and thanks for taking the time. I would like to see you compare an 8 bit scope to a 12 bit scope to see what you really gain with a 12 bit scope.
