Folger not having a remora or a study didn't matter. That seedborn muse was god tier and I'm beyond shocked that it stayed on that board the entire game. That should have been the first thing to go. This goes to show why counterspells can be a detriment if you don't run targeted removal like swords, path, abrupt decay, assassin's trophy, etc. If you don't have the proper interaction in hand than you can get screwed. This is what happens a lot in cEDH. If something doesn't get countered, it stays because of so little single target removal. Great win Folger! I always love seeing you get the win at this table! I still remember when they teamed up on you in the first few games you played.
But you see thats what happens when you have tight metas like with edh people kinda get to a point of "eh i dont need to run this" and so all it takes is one person to run something to seaborn muse or something and now the whole group remembers how good it is to have targeted removal, id love to see if they will change their builds to those with more interaction
Side note: Since the affected player can decide which replacement effect would be applied and both notion thief and jace win clause are a replacement there was no need to counter the thief. Folger could have choose the Jace win clause and win, since Jace is not worded "if you would loose the game by drawing while not having any cards" so he does not require you to actually draw the card just to attempt to draw the card.
As far as I understand it, you're right and not. The notion thief had no need to be countered because it wouldn't have stopped the win, not because of replacement effects as Jace states "If you would draw" meaning you still need a draw trigger to resolve, but instead because since it was Folger's turn, he would decide which notion thief goes off when. He would just need to declare that his notion thief goes on the stack first so that Ryan's notion thief tries to draw a card off of Jace's Draw, and then Folger's notion takes Ryan's Draw. When multiple players have a notion thief in play, the last notion thief to resolve is final. Whoever's turn it is decides which notion thief effect applies first, and then it creates a chain reaction from there. When the Abrupt Decay killed Elder...depending on if Folger had some sort of Noxious Revival type effect, there was another line of play. If he had used Finale to get Drake, stolen Kenrith, then he could’ve Reanimated the Elder and give it haste. Then the Noxious revival could’ve done its thing and get the freed from the real on top, and he then could’ve drawn it with Thrasios. Again, totally depends on his hand, but with the amount of cards he had drawn, it seems likely. He won in the end though so no matter. GG and great content as always!! I saw this come up once on Spike Feeders as well; Notion Thief doesn't stop Jace from winning the game. They both try to apply replacement effects on drawing a card, and the player drawing the card chooses which replacement effect is applied. (L1 Judge)
@Alex Bergie It is a replacement effect. So you can choose which of the two effects triggers first. Your Jace or the enemies Notion Thief. If you choose Jace, you just win and the other effect is irrelevant.
@Alex Bergie I explained how it works in my original comment. Thief and Jace are both trying to apply replacement effects to the same draw. It's rule 616. Interaction of replacement effects.
@cody h: exactly my point, they let it live for one too many turns. I have never let or left a seedborne muse resolve and or live for so long; much less with Thrasios on board. IMO, they failed at proper threat assessment and/or finding an answer for Folger's board.
Why was Folger not drawing cards for other people's Remora triggers? I usually enjoy cEDH, but tymna and thrasios were mistakes. Non-specific partner is poor design in general, but the efficiency of these two cards leads to what we see in homogenization of gameplay. Why play anything else, when you get all your relevant colors in small, efficient packages.
This is more a pitfall of the format having mana bases that make 4 and 5 color decks basically free to play than the partners existing. I dont think the partners themselves were a mistake, the problem really comes from thrasios and tymna just being incredible value engines by themselves. It is less about the colors they provide, but the value they provide. Notice we don't see other partners that often, especially partners that don't have either thrasios or tymna.
i think the “partner with x card” partners are fine. the problem is this first gen of partners that can pair with anything else is too good because you don’t have to make any concessions with your commander choice to get the colors you want. combine this with the fact that tymna and thrasios are just objectively powerful value engines in their own and you get a ridiculous combination of great value in the command zone and zero restrictions on how to build them because they don’t require supporting cards to be good. either way i wonder if a consultation ban is on the horizon? probably not because i don’t think the rc cares that much about cedh but i genuinely think that would help format diversity without eliminating archetypes

I played a casual game recently with an opponent who played a seedborn muse in their Kruphix deck. I was the only one with removal it seemed in my golgari deck, tried, and had it stopped with a Veil of Summer. They went on to stock up the whole 100 mana for whatever that alternate wincon was.
