    Just curious what is the reason for thickening dye?

    • @CasualCollisions
      @CasualCollisions  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It limits the spread of the dye so it stays where it's placed. This type of design would be very difficult to do without thickened dye.

    Have you ever done a hoodie and how hard is it (thickness and dye penetration) compared to a reg t-shirt? Thank you in advance brother.

    • @CasualCollisions
      @CasualCollisions  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes; but, I keep putting off making a video on it. They're much thicker than a t-shirt, require substantially more dye, the dye penetrates more shallow resulting in the need to either use liquid or several cycles of ice, and it's much more difficult to tie due to the thickness. (Which is a huge reason why I don't do them due to arthritis.) Also, if the hoodie has a zipper - you need to minimize the time it's in the soda ash or it will begin to damage the metal.

      Thank you for your response! I am new to tie die but I am hooked. It’s like the hobby I never knew I needed. I live in the West Coast so a hoodie would be nice. I am sorry to hear you have arthritis. I have joint issues as well..it’s a real bitch. Take care brother and thank you again for your time and knowledge!
      God bless you and your family ❤️

    What brand of tie dye color would you recommend best? That would last long and will not fade.

    Awesome shirt! How do you thicken the dye?

    • @CasualCollisions
      @CasualCollisions  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use guar gum; but, most people use sodium alginate.
      With guar gum, I start with about 1/4 tsp per 8oz of water and add to that depending on the consistency I'm looking for. After the consistency is correct, I add the dye powder and mix well.
      Guar Gum: amzn.to/2UiOS4d
      Sodium Alginate: amzn.to/2YmIhHt

    What does thickening the black do to the shirt compared to just normal black? Also do i need to soak it in soda ash first?

    • @CasualCollisions
      @CasualCollisions  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every shirt has to be soaked in soda ash first - without that step the Procion dye will not bond to the fibers of the shirt. Thickened dye will prevent it from soaking into the fabric as far - allowing greater control of the placement.

    How do you thicken the dye? Cornstarch?

    • @CasualCollisions
      @CasualCollisions  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I use guar gum; but, most people use sodium alginate. Guar gum is usually available at the grocery store in the caning section. You'll use roughly 1/8tsp to 16oz of liquid.

    I love your designs...please I have 2 questions, it will gladden my heart if answered
    1) After tying, do you just leave the fabric out in the open for it to dry?
    2) After rinsing off the dye, do u still wash with soap in the machine?

    • @CasualCollisions
      @CasualCollisions  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      1) Yes. It's humid here, so there's no need to bag/cover the fabric during the 18-24 hour batch process. If you live in a low humidity area, you would likely need to bag the items.
      2) Yes. I use soap in the washing machine. Procion dye binds to natural fibers so soap will not strip out any dye that's bonded. It only removes unbonded dye.

    Why not rubber bands for the whole process? Would it not be easier to handle, and just as tight?
    GOOD DEMO.

    • @CasualCollisions
      @CasualCollisions  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rubber bands are more difficult to work with and cannot be pulled as tight as sinew.

    Hey Sir I need dis for my project so pls answer me....can I iron it

    • @CasualCollisions
      @CasualCollisions  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can iron it. Procion dye binds to any organic material and it can be washed dozens/hundreds of times with very little fading over years.
