    Been in retail for over 25 years. When someone asks me for my best price, I know that they’re just looking for a fair deal. I offer them a fair price that I’m happy with and usually it works out. If you don’t like being asked, set your prices and advertise that you don’t haggle. People will always ask for your best price. That’s comes with the job. And they assume that you know more than they do and they don’t want to be offensive so they’re not comfortable making an offer.

    • @xchazz86
      @xchazz86 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Agreed, varies depending on the relationship with the customer. New customers typically always asks for the best deal, once the trust is established they care less about the price. If you dont want to get new customers than simply dont agree to haggle, but if you want to grow then you will have to compromise.
      Put in the effort of explaining the price and business model for your customers instead of just taking orders is the difference between good and shit customer service.

    When I bought my watch from Fed we were texting back and forth and I kept running my card and it was saying it was going through. I ran it 3 times and ended up running 30k plus but it wasn’t going through to Fed so I’m sure he thought it was a scam.The problem was it was late at night and my bank didn’t believe it was me charging the watch to my card so they froze payments. I finally got a hold of the bank after hours and answered all my security questions and they paid. I was so happy and Fed was very professional and very polite through the whole ordeal. Thank you Fed and thank you to my Delray Family I have had my Sub for a year and a half and I’m still in the honeymoon stage.Fed said the watch was in good condition but when I got it I felt like it was way better than good it was better looking in person. Actually...in the UK 'what's your best price' is quite a common and normal question, esp. in the antiques business but also elsewhere. Not a single vendor will think 'what a stupid question'. I guess it must be a cultural difference between the US and the UK! In the UK it just means ' could you give me a discount and what would be that price' so it would be the best price for the buyer and not for the seller. I would say 'loosen up Federico'...besides that....love your video's and keep up

    Fed, I agree on backing out of a deal - annoying. On getting annoyed with a customer asking your best price, it’s only stupid bc it doesn’t benefit you. When you’re in the business of trading watches, you need to expect to get this question. Why should the standard be that they need to negotiate against themselves? They have the same desires as you.

    • @eastbaystreet1242
      @eastbaystreet1242 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would take it one step further - if I am starting a relationship with a dealer like F, I want it to be a nice relationship, but I also want to get a good price. So I might say "what discount are you comfortable with" because I am actually trying to show respect for the seller, instead of just starting with an offer that is 40 percent lower than his ask. I feel like I am setting expectations early, showing that I do want a discount, but I am not out to destroy the guy (or just aggravate him).

      I live in a country where negotiating a reduced price of a clearly ticketed Item is not good form. Where possible, the best price can often be obtained by shopping around. This is not a bazaar retail culture so you don't insult a seller by acting as though it is. Now if I'm visiting overseas where negotiating a price is routine then of course I negotiate too. Sellers set prices expecting to negotiate so both parties to the sale play the game to where everybody is happy.

  • @AlSiguenza
    @AlSiguenza ปีที่แล้ว +5

    You might have a bit of arrogance if unwilling to respond to a basic question, what is your lowest price? The consumer , and the seller, want to obtain a fair deal and the best price, especially if expecting return business. I’m sure you didn’t purchase your Ferrari without due diligence. I have made multiple purchases “while just kicking tires”, but the price was right and the seller was willing to work with me. Even if just to massage my ego. Just mho

    "What's your best price" or "What can you do on Item X" is totally normal. If those questions are a problem then selling is not gonna work out well for you. You are free to say "My best price is the marked price" and the potential buyer is free to say, "OK, my best price is $5 less than that, have a nice day". Further, I agree with the comment that NOTHING is sold in this world until the money changes hands. We are talking about watches that can cost as much as cars after all. If I agree online to buy a car and notice a previously unseen scratch on the door when I go to pick it up, the previously agreed upon price is out the window. As a seller, you should have no issue with sending pic after pic after pic to a truly interested seller.

  • @Amplitudeproblem
    @Amplitudeproblem ปีที่แล้ว +2

    All it means is "Just like you're trying to maximize what you're getting, I'm trying to minimize what I'm spending. Is there a price lower than what's listed that still gives you a reasonable profit without my overpaying? Or is that indeed the price that's listed?" That's a lot of words to ask someone, so "what's your best price" isn't such a bad shortcut.

    Most retailers add a certain margin on their price in anticipation of customer asking discount. For certain products that prices are advertised by the manufacturer, retailers still know how much low they can go and still make a profit.
    Customer buy from you instead of other seller is because they feel they got a bargain from you. Even if it's 5, 10 or 50 dollars , it makes them feel the deal is special and they gain more buying from you instead of other sellers. If you don't know these things then either what you sell is in high demand low availability or you're bad seller.

    As someone who negotiates corporate deals for a living, your sales-guy responses cracked me up. Until you get the funds, NOTHING is sold. Also, I agree about the "what is your best price" annoyance, but from the buyers end that is a signal that your price is too high and you need to come down. Look at it this way, if you have a $10,000 watch and you get that question, come back with "sure, I can work with you, my best price is $9,950. That now forces the decision back to the buyer and you have given up almost nothing...and you have shown you are "working with them". If you let the buyer shoot an offer, you have to react to maybe going lower. It this case, I would say, "Will you take $9,700?". You may have just lost $250 on your arrogance.

      Besides that you just called Fed being arrogant your example is quite contrived. I.e. if you offer $ 9,950 after the "what is your best price question" the reply can be very easily "sorry, still too much for me, what about $ 9,500?".
      In fact you are being arrogant in assuming that your "gracious" offer of reducing the price by 0.5% is accepted (as a "smart" counter-play to avoid a bigger reduction) by a seemingly very stupid buyer.
      The assumption that a buyer would swallow a mere 0.5% reduction is quite patronizing.
      Anybody who "negotiates corporate deals" and offers a 0.5% "deal" will be laughed at and surly not be taken seriously. 🙂

    Fed, I ran into the “best price” callers a lot when I used to sell cars on Craigslist. The conversation went something like this:
    Caller: what’s your best price?
    Me: the price is in the ad.
    Caller: yeah but what’s your best price?
    Me: okay you may be new at this. I list the price, if you’re interested you make an offer. If necessary, we negotiate with each other. You are asking me to negotiate with myself, which I will not do. Would you like to make an offer?
    In my experience the Best Price callers weren’t serious, they only wanted to use my best price as leverage with someone else.

    I sell a lot of watches. Obviously I get the best price question a lot as well. I agree with Fed in that I am tempted to reply much as he did. Instead I give them a price slightly below what I'm asking, but still above where I might have been happy to land. Don't expect my ACTUAL best price when you ask that question. In real estate we always get clients who’s houses are in awful condition and believe that they can get the same market prices as their neighbor’s homes in excellent condition. Often you’ll see houses with For Sale by Owner signs posted on the lawns. They’ve been told by their agents that they can’t get as much as they want and try to sell their houses themselves and the houses remain up for sale and are often taken off of the market after a few offers when the potential buyers find that banks won’t issue mortgages for properties that won’t appraise for the price that the owners are asking.

    If someone isn’t asking what’s your best price, they are likely gong to low ball instead. Why would a buyer offer their hand first, if the seller doesn’t want to? So in effect, what’s your best price is the natural first question for a buyer, in most cases. For Veblen goods, obviously that’s not the point of the purchase. But it’s understandable that some would still want to feel like they got the better of the deal.

    Reading some of the comments here some do not understand what Fed is trying to say. To ask "what is your best price?" as a buyer signals that one has no clue about haggling. It is an inept and lazy attempt to get the seller to lower a set price without actually making a move as a buyer. Very bad style.
    When the seller has set a price then automatically the ball is in the buyer's court. Either he agrees with the price or he makes an [lower] offer. With that the ball is in the seller's court and he either agrees or rejects the offer.
    Asking "what is your best price?" shows an ineptitude in negotiating and is a naive play to somehow get the seller to reveal his lowest selling price. Those are usually the same people who bail out when the seller actually would give them that number.

    Federico, I agree with you, but you seem to be overlooking the psychological aspect of negotiation. Often, what may seem like a 'stupid question' can actually guide the potential buyer towards making a decision. While the question may appear illogical, it can be psychologically significant. When selling a watch (or anything), there is no such thing as a stupid question. The buyer might be uncertain and simply seeking reassurance about the deal and the seller. Purchasing a luxury watch is often driven by emotions rather than logic. If the process were purely logical, no one would buy a luxury watch. Nowadays, nobody really needs a watch, let alone a luxury watch. You should be more forgiven. 😊
