Legend has it that three young nobles richly dressed, during a hunt, came across three rotting corpses, from which an almost prophetic warning came; "Vous serez ce que nous sommes" ("You will be what we are"). The terrified nobles fled but appeared to them a Cross, a sign that the meeting had happened by divine will. According to other versions of the story, the nobles met three high-ranking religious who showed them the stages of decomposition to put them on guard. The meaning of this "medieval parable" is twofold: while reiterating the inevitability of death and decomposition, the meeting has great spiritual significance and reminds the three nobles that "power, honor and wealth are in vain" in the face of inexorability of death.
Starting from the 13th century, the theme of the meeting of the three Livers and the three Dead became recurrent in iconography and religious manuscripts. The theme is represented in numerous medieval paintings throughout Europe, but only in four churches in Italy, one of which in Sardinia, that of the Church of Our Lady of Sos Regnos Altos in Bosa. The other paintings in Italy are at the Duomo of Atri in Abruzzo, in the abbey of Vezzolano near Albugnano d'Asti and in the Camposanto of Pisa.
The discovery of the frescoes
During the restoration of 1972-73, in the oldest part of the Church of Our Lady of Regnos Altos medieval frescoes of great importance for iconography and style were found; the authors are anonymous but, considering the themes dealt with, it is evidently the influence of the Franciscans and the Spaniards. Painted around 1340-1345, this frescoes were commissioned by Giovanni d'Arborea, brother of Mariano IV and represent a rare example of gothic painting and the only representation of the "legend of the meeting of the three living and the three dead" throughout Sardinia.
In the left wall at the top we see the Adoration of the Three Kings, the Last Supper, some ecclesiastics and the four Evangelists. Below we have the penitent Magdalene and some Saints and Saints, including many women. On the wall facing the apse, in the upper left we see Saint Martin giving the cloak to the poor, down San Costantino and Sant'Elena with the instruments of the Passion of Christ; on the other side we have St. Christopher, St. George who kills the dragon, the Archangel Michael and the Celestial Woman. In the wall on the right we see above some Franciscan friars and a very rare representation of the "legend of the three living and three dead", unique of the island, followed by the Martyrdom of San Lorenzo.
The small church is located inside the Castello di Serravalle which dominates the town of Bosa. It was probably built before the castle and when, in 1443, the walls were enlarged, it was closed inside. Originally dedicated to San Giovanni first and then to Sant'Andrea, it changed its dedication in 1847 when, among the ruins of the keep, a wooden statuette was found depicting the Madonna. This statue, with probable late-medieval origins, was called "Our Lady of Regnos Altos"; it is still kept in the church today and its celebration occurs on Saturday and Sunday of the second week of September.

Il significato di questa “parabola medievale” é duplice: pur ribadendo l’inevitabilità della morte e della decomposizione, l’incontro ha un grande significato spirituale e ricorda ai tre nobili che «potere, onore e ricchezza sono vani» di fronte all’inesorabilità della morte.
