Nice video, I will have to watch more. I remember some 21 years ago when in Utrecht for a business meeting, being blown away by the sight of the canal and the large vessels that passed me as I walked back to the railway station along one of the canal bank paths. One of the ships I saw had a Mercedes sedan car sitting near it's stern, I guess atop the crewmembers' cabin area. Very impressive and a great way to transport bulk commodities

Steele m. If you watch them in say. Rotterdam, it is amazing that any of them stay afloat. You can understand the tankers, perhaps, because they would be, by definition, sealed, but anything carrying gravel, sand or grain (unlikely to be that low with grain) with the wind whipping the wavetops over the gunwhales, you just have to assume the bilge pumps are working flat out.
I've done Ieper to Brugges and back in a cruiser, partly on the Ostende - Ghent canal and you meet some mahousive boats. A good few of them are like that. Astonishing.

Dank je! Familie van mijn moeders kant waren binnenschippers, mijn moeder is op een Hagenaartje geboren, en later is de familile overgegaan op een rijnaak, een sleep schip. In de oorlog door de Duitsers geconfisqueerd en omgebouwd als landingsvaartuig, en tijdens een oefening in Calais gezonden. Één van mijn moeders broers heeft jaren lang met drie spitsen gevaren. Binnenscheepvaart zit dus in mijn bloed.
ive been watching quite a few of your videos , & it looks like from what ive seen , that , unlike us , we do all our work with lorries , but over there you seem to do nearly all the work with barges , ive seen alsorts in them , from wood chippings to gravel , is that how it's always been ? i love watching your barge vlogs , i'd love to do that all day lol . thanks for sharing .lori

Travelling by train alongside the Rhine, I saw quite a few barges with a car on the deck, presumably to drive back home after work.

@@brucewilliams8714 .. Nope, the car is just to get around town for shopping or whatever. Many of these boats are family owned, with the family and crew (if any) living on board. While they're being loaded or unloaded, there's time to drive around for such chores.

No need for a plimsolmarker. There for there is an inzinkingsteken. (Sorry in dutch nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inzinkingsmerk?wprov=sfti1) The white line just above the waterline at 3:37 in front of the boulder. And there are 3 of these markers. Middle 03:15 and frond 03:09
