    The National Association for Gun Rights, backed by more than 4.5 million members and supporters, is the only grassroots-led, no-compromise gun rights organization fighting to restore your rights at all levels of government.

    ===I love knives. So, when people started asking us to do knife reviews, I thought this would be fun. I'm not big on wasting a weekly video just reviewing a single knife and just regurgitating the marketing points that the knife company sends in the box. Rather, I'd prefer to see some "head-to-head" discussion. That brought us to reaching out to a bunch of knife companies, asking them to send us their "best" knife in three categories:
    Best EDC Folding Knife
    Best EDC Fixed-blade Knife
    Best Fixed Blade Field Knife
    Many companies never responded back to our email. Others seemed interested but never came through. So, before you bitch that we didn't test "YOUR" favorite knife; remember that these knives were sent from companies to represent them. Not everyone wanted to be involved with this test. Maybe that will change next year.
    The Test: This video covers entries for the Best Fixed Blade Field Knife. While I love knives and train with them; I deferred to Randy "Rawhide" Wurst and Imri Morgenstern, because both live and breath knives. Both teach knife fighting. Imri even makes knives professionally. They each took half of the entries, played with them for a week; swapped piles, and played with those for a week. Then, I brought them together and they brain stormed different ways to make each knife shine or fail.
    The Knives listed by video order:
    1. Browning GG Bush Craft Zebra
    2. Buck Ground Combat Knife
    3. Cold Steel SRK (VG-10 San Mai)
    4. Skallywag Gunnersmate
    5. ESEE - 6
    6. Kershaw Camp-10
    7. Off Grid Knives Tracker
    8. Cold Steel Outdoorsman San Mai
    So, What did we find out?
    First, it sucked that I wasn't included in this; because I would have loved to get a couple new knives.
    Second, both Randy and Imri both CHANGED their initial opinion. Let that sink in: they both picked knives they liked, during initial viewing that they thought would win. However, after further testing, both changed their minds and fell in love with a different blade. Point is, don't just trust your eyes or the marketing flare... do your homework and test stuff out.
    These are all great knives.
    Some are better than others. A few are much better than others. Also, please note that Randy's opinion is different than Imri's, and will be different from your opinion. So, again, if we didn't pick your favorite knife or your company wasn't represented here; don't bitch too hard. I didn't have a say, but I'm the one answering the comments. Note that we were NOT paid a dime to lean in anyone's favor. Big thanks to Imri and Randy for running this test.
    We'll have more great tests in the near future.
    I hope you enjoyed the video. Strength & Honor, TR.

    Thanks for the mention....for clarification our blade style is a drop point, full flat grind. We make them in many other colors so that green isn't the only choice. Remember, we started as a training company in the Amazon. One thing you learn real fast is that when you lay items down in the jungle it tends to eat them....we aren't a fan of bright colors as much as we've found it to be a necessity whether you are on the floor of the Amazon Jungle or if you are at a Colorado kill site dressing an elk....bright colors help....Also, we have a pretty good warranty too....thanks again.

    It's nice to see non-knife nerds talk about knives, and what they're really useful for. There's nothing worse than listening to bushcraft and folding knife nerds, gushing over tiny knives that I can't see a purpose in owning. BTW, the Kershaw Camp 10 is 65Mn carbon steel. It's a Chinese version of roughly 1075-1085 carbon steel. The Kershaw Camp 10 wouldn't be my choice for a Kukri, but I understand you're reviewing the knives you were sent. I'm not a fan of the hard plastic handle.

    That stuff you guys didn't like about the buck knife (ballistic nylon) can be taken off and separated from the kydex sheath, so, I don't think the sheath is that much of a deal breaker. Most of my knives have modified sheaths I changed anyways to fit my preferences.

    The Kershaw Camp 10 has served me well for years and is affordable.65mn carbon steel. The kukri-esque profile is more difficult to sharpen for some people, but is perhaps the most diverse shaped blade there is.

    The basic Esee 6 Is a great knife and not heinous like that green thing with the pricey scales. I bought the Camp10 for my son because of the price point, we both like it but I prefer my Junglas. I've had the SRK ... good knife but I didn't like the big ricasso. Now they are making it without the big ricasso but it's hollow ground (not my preference). I haven't used or handled the others

    If you're thinking Cold Steel SRK find an original Carbon V, they're insanely strong and a top notch "survival" tactical blade. The new ones are inferior with a hollow grind that makes the tip weak and the SK5 steel is so hard its brittle and tends to snap/crack. The older san mai are better as well. It's not a great bush knife though, too thick for woodworking.

    I have a Cold Steel SRK in CPM-3V. I love the knife, but I agree that it requires jimping. To my knowledge, Cold Steel doesn't have jimping on any of their fixed blades. I'm not sure how I would add jimping to such a tough steel.

    The one thing that I've noticed missing from a fighting knife in a lot of designs is a quillon. Do a puncture and hit a rib or breastbone, (strike numbers 5, 6, and 7 in Arnis) and your hand is likely to slide up the blade a cut your fingers badly. I like the old LaRue Tactical knife for a fighter personally but, they're not made anymore and had a semi hollow blade I think which, isn't great for brushcraft. There's tradeoffs in most knife designs it seems.

    I do appreciate all these opinions, it seems from the 7th? one up 'most' of the negative s come from fit. Who has owned a knife and NOT sanded and reshaped the scales to fit their hand. More when buying a 'cheeper' knife but still.

    I don't like Americanized tantos because I prefer clean, organic lines. Tantos always look like they were designed for anime and purchased in a gas station. I don't like my knives to look like they came from a Power Ranger. Sharp angles and straight lines aren't appealing to me.
    600 pounds hitting you at 40 mph then shaking you like a rag doll...if you think you can knife fight a grizzly, I don't know what to tell ya, you're just not that smart.
    The Bowie and the Cold Steel SRK are clip points, so named because it looks like a clip was removed from the spine of the blade to form the tip. The ESEE 6 is a drop point, so named because the tip is dropped from the spine, creating a tear drop shape.

    A knifemaker who doesn't know what san-mai is?
    You forge weld three layers of steel, the hard steel being sandwiched between two softer steels.
    The first knife I made was a high carbon between stainless sheepsfoot utility knife.
    Wasn't hard to forge weld, and the steel was very solid. If you try this then make the stainless at least 1/3 thicker than the high carbon, because the stainless will move lot faster than the high carbon and you end up with most of the blade being high carbon steel after putting the bevels on the edge.
    Because the carbon core was too thick the blade ended being unfit for my purpose, but it was a practical, sharp as fuck knife.

    Esee, Tops, and Ka-bar's Becker line is what you want to look at in terms of well (not low) priced mass produced blades.
    My own current combat/survival blade I am most fond of is my Busse HOG Steelheart (very thick version of the Steelheart). I also like my fixed blades by South African Journeyman Smith Neels van den Berg.
    Just a heads up regarding the Cold Steel recon tanto or SRK. Been around these knives for a very long time. They're generally good knives actually BUT they do have one design flaw. They have a 90 degree angle/(stress riser) in the guard region.
    I have seen them break there. But they're still pretty good.
    But still, I would say choose something from Esee, Tops knives or Becker for something mass produced but well made and pretty reasonably priced.

    • @emanuelroth7960
      @emanuelroth7960 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, Cold Steel makes many of their knives, like the SRK and recon tanto, in cpm 3v steel which is more expensive but also MUCH tougher. I would save up money for that version if you really want a Cold Steel.

    I agree with Randy on mixing the materials for the sheath. That bothers me too, and for me it has to be one or the other. I was gifted a Gerber strong arm, and I was reluctant at first because of the damage Bear Grylls has done to the Gerber company, and It has nylon, and kydex, but entirely removable with many mounting options, plus made in the USA, so I like it quite a bit. I do use Esee almost exclusively. Definitely not into the bright colors at all, so I choose drab or dark grey, and I prefer the original scales as well not the newer 3D scales. I always remove the scales first thing, and tape off the metal where the handles attach to prevent moisture from getting in there and causing rust where I can't see. I do this because I then strip off all the coating from the blade nice, and neat for ease of use for wood craft, aesthetics, and I just don't like the coating. People say, "Oh, that's high carbon steel it will rust, but that's bullshit. Yes, if I'm an idiot, and do not take care of it or live in a coastal area it might, but neither of those apply to me. I take care of my knives, and oil them as needed, and I do not live in a coastal area, so that is no problem. The Esee 4 I carry if I'm wearing a chest rig. It's perfect for fighting IMO with a 4.1" cutting surface, and 9" overall. This makes a good combo with my Spyderco tenacious or my Off Grid Knives Rhino folding blade, or Kershaw CQC. The Esee 6 is what I run for camping, and have beaten the hell out of it. For me it is perfect for this, and I find the blade length just fine for cutting, and on rare occasions I will baton wood with it as well as the Esee 5. Another terrific option IMO is the Ka-Bar Becker 2 or 7 if you want full tang, fine cutting, and chopping capabilities. I have owned and used all of these except for the Buck knife. It's funny, I felt the same way about the off grid tracker. I didn't get a chance to hold it, but read all the specs, and took a chance on it. I am glad that I did because it sits proudly on my belt, and pack that I leave in my SUV. Good knife. Wow, I gotta say that this video is just awesome! you mention knives, and I come running. Like guns, I never get tired of playing with knives, studying them, owning them, and testing all of them. I love you guys. Tactical rifleman is my go to channel, and I always make time for you all, and truly appreciate what you teach, and your content is just what I'm all about. There is always a lesson in all of your videos, and I can't wait for my tactical rifleman shirt to come in. It has to be the most bad ass logo I have ever seen, so I will proudly wear that, and hopefully be drinking some coffee out of a tactical rifleman mug come Christmas. I've been hinting about that mug since November to my little girls, so I'm excited. Thanks so much for the content. I know everyone is obsessed with paracord like it came out yesterday. Don't get me wrong I love, and use it too, but I would really like to see a video comparison or pros and cons of paracord versus Kevlar cord, or spearit spectra, bank line, Atwood micro utility cord, tripline, etc. This is a topic often overlooked, and it would be cool to see some of the pros giving their take on the subject. As always thanks for your work, please keep them coming. Strength and Honor.

    I really don't think you'll answer, do you have any recommendations on ar-15 build kit's for the sole purpose of learning to build and strip the platform?

    • @TacticalRifleman
      @TacticalRifleman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Literally just buy a stripped lower and a stripped upper. Then, add parts as needed. A whole lower-parts kit is around $80, minus the buffer tube and stock. Have fun with it and learn. It wont run great, but it will work, and that's how we learn.

    Enjoyed the two perspective on the knives. Question: Did you guys select the brands or did they select you? Thanks. (JF)

      We ask dozens for companies to send whatever knives they wanted to best represent them in each category

    Love my cold steel knives, from that original 1980s tanto a carbon 5 srk their Kukri is phenomenal, can cleanly cut through neck of a large deer, one cut . Their tomahawks are good , machetes not so much 😀

      Only Cold Steel machete I like is the hockey stick looking Camp and Grass machete... but it is a niche tool.

    Good review guys!
    I like ESEE knives for survival/bushcraft use because they work.
    The 1095 high carbon steel is easy to resharpen, and they have a lifetime guarantee.
    What I don't like about ESEE knives is that they normally do not come with a 90-degree spine (my Worksharp easily fixes that), and I typically remove the finish and force a patina on the blade.

    As any Marine should, I have a K-Bar. I also have a SOG SEAL pup on my vest and a good mulitool. But, for EDC I carry a CRKT Drifter and that is what I use almost all the time. The rest just live in a bag and are only used in an emergency or when I go practice.

    Simple answer:
    Did you buy it from cold steel or a subsidiary of budk?
    Yes---> No.
    No---> is it 440 stainless?---> No---> It's a decent knife.

    I almost said hi to yall at BDU but was busy as hell and holding a camera haha. I would definitely recommend a LAV mic for segments like this, at least for people like Randy. LOVE the video, have been trying to replicate Karl's knife setup on a battle belt for a while but cant find the perfect knife. Thanks for making great content, REALLY wanna see Randy throw that knife :P
