+JT Van V i hate to tell you but id take the term beginner off this, cause youre right this is somewhat learned over time but this is the best way of teaching it i have heard, amazing video
I put a medicine ball on the floor. I get into a Pushup position above it with my stomach over the ball. I drop from this position and exhale. This helps me to simulate getting hit. It does not take long to learn to exhale.
Breathing is the most fundamental of ALL fundamentals and yet it gets so easily overlooked! I absolutely LOVE the way you demonstrated breathing on defense leading to easier offensive transitions. I'm definitely guilty of holding my breath while defending and that quick inhale can gas me even with good cardio. I wouldn't have even known how simple of a fix it is without this video!
I'm learning english by hearing you ( I'm spanish). Also I'll sign up soon in a box club near my village. I'll have on my mind all your tips and your attitude. Thanks!
This has solved a big mystery for me. My sparring fitness seems to not reflect my overall fitness at all. I get ridiculously out of breath after 1 or 2 rounds. So glad I watched this vid.
I'm so glad I found your channel. I would hold my breath at times when it was my turn to hold the pads and I would gas out quicker than when I was punching. The way you explained proper breathing really helps. Thank you so much.
Hey man, I want to thank you again because when I am having trouble explaining to students, I watch your videos for advice on how to help explain some concepts better! Once again I must say, this really is the best boxing channels on youtube!
I've been kick boxing for 2 years now. I can run forever. Do intervals. But never realized why I gassed so quickly when sparring. Now that I've watched this video, I realize when ever I spar, and people close distance and start unloading shots, I do freeze up and hold my breath. This video was an eye opener and I really appreciate it. With regards to your gloves, I like the idea. I use a pair of 12oz title glove. I like how fluidly I can throw punches but hate how sore my knuckles get (especially on my right hand. The middle knuckle is usually swollen and in agony after bag work). Would be nice to have a lightweight glove with very good padding for the knuckles. I feel like i have more than enough wrist support with my handwraps.
Try the ringside apex training gloves, padding is great and the wrist support is the best in the business! not too expensive either, i got a pair on amazon for 30 dollars!
bro thank you for this video, some coaches dont really go in to certain subjects properly, either that or in a way i dont fully understand, i move around a lot but love boxing too much to let my training slide. so i've trained in few gyms. this video helped me a lot in sparring. it took a while after watching for me to comment only because i took what you said and tried it out first. Thanks for the help JT
I asked my parents to get me a heavy bag and stand for Christmas. I've been wanting one for a while, but have been putting it off due to other things. I figured I'd ask for it for Christmas that way I don't have to spend my money on it. It's coming in Wednesday. I'm excited, I've always loved the idea of boxing. I've done a lot of shadowboxing, as well as kickboxing in my home. It's helps a lot with stress. Not only that, but it is a wonderful workout. I really need to get back into shape. I haven't been eating that well, and I haven't been exercising as good as I used to. I feel like it's catching up to me.
Thanks so much for this video, JT, very helpful! Just started "sparring" with my trainer and often struggle to catch my breath. Will definitely be practing the breathing drills from now on and looking forward to how it will improve my sparring! I'm a big fan and subscriber of precision boxing, thanks for the great instruction!
Used a couple of these tactics in sparring last week and I was shocked at how big of a difference it made. Thank you so much for all of the extremely valuable information!!
Nice vid man ive got a bunch of questions in my head about breathing and you helped answer a couple of them thanks for the time you spend making these videos.
Very good! I'm Brazilian, autodidact in boxe and English. I'm learning a lot here in your Chanel. Excellent didactic! Sorry for any errors on my written.
I love all ur "beginner videos" like I love watching boxing. And since I've been watching ur videos a lot! Then I started looking for boxing gyms, and I found one I like and I've been doing it for 2 weeks now. Like if I wasn't watching ur video I wouldn't of knew what to do and not mistaken on stuff like my motions and stuff. thanks keep doing good videos like u been!
Every now and then I come back to some of these earlier videos that focus on beginners, even though I've been boxing for a few years now, just to remind myself of the fundamentals. It's easy to forget and pick up bad habits which often equals bad results in sparring.
Love your videos, getting back into the boxing gym after a two year layoff because of some surgeries. I enjoy my gym, but I wish they had the detail and instruction that you do. Most of the time I try to teach the youngins a lot of things I learn in all of your videos, so thank you.
Honestly the best boxing training online I've come across. As an old guy boxing, breathing on the defensive is something that I don't believe I do well now that I'm aware of it. JT you always provide great advice. Thanks man.
hey JT I wanna thank you for all these great video's you've done for us. I've been in and out of the gym since I was six and there's so many things I've done wrong I'm pretty decent and can hold my own against anyone but your video's help me so much I'm 20 now and I've just got back into the boxing gym about 4 weeks ago now and I've been trying to soak up all the info I can from you there so much I've forgotten and im a little rusty but your really helping me so thanks from the UK!!!
I just started boxing not too long ago and at the age of 33 I'm way slower than most people! You're beginner videos are amazing and easily explained. Thank you!
JT thank you very much for sharing your knowledge! For guys like me who live in the outback with no boxing gyms around TH-cam and your guidance are the only thing we can rely on sometimes! Keep it up and thanks again!
that glove concept is gold man... especially since its custom to fit ur needs... if anything im a beginner but i like having a lot of wrist support for those heavy hits
Merry Christmas Maestro and thanks for posting these videos. Your axiom "boxing on your own terms" makes us old non competitors keep on watching and learning from your videos with enthusiasm
It would be nice to see another audiotape of yours in which you shout numbers and the listener is responding with defensive movements, or you could make a video in which you use the tapes that you already made, but instead of hitting when numbers are shouted, the listener responds to those combinaitions with defensive movements that you would explain. Thanks for the knowledge that you share with us, J. !
excellent advice, now i know where I've been going wrong. even though my fitness is decent could never work out why I get gassed within 2 rounds. implementing this asap. keep up the good work man. peace
Thanks for another great boxing video JT! Best of luck with your glove design. I am looking for durability in a glove. The seams on the inner palm always start ripping and along the Velcro cuff. Good Padding over the knuckles is a must also. Hit it hard!
Great tutorials! Great technical insight, but also inspirational! I'm glad I discovered this sport and your channel. As for the feedback you asked for (more than one year ago...), I'm just a beginner, but I can say that, you're right, punching the bag does hurt the knuckles (so, special gloves for that it's a good idea) and the price range you're thinking about, it's in the market. All the best!
Elbows down! Holding my elbows up was one of my biggest mistakes - along with holding my breath. The breathing on defense is fantastic advice. I like a bag glove with good padding on the knuckles, is a little heavy (16 or 20 oz, isn't bulky (a glove that heavy usually is) and dries fast. I don't like when my hands are pruney after bag.
YOUR THE "BEST OF THE BEST"..... Breathing is very important.... I LOVE ALL YOUR VIDEDS...I am a beginner....your " VIDEOS" are VERY .....VERY HELPFUL......THANK YOU....and MUCH ALOHA TO YOU;-)
thanks for this video.. i think you're correct when you say that not too many people teach to exhale when taking shots..( i've never been told to do that).....I can run for miles ( sprint my ass off.. but after like 3-4 rounds of pad-work/sparring ( Muay Thai)..i feel dead...i never understood it, and its been buggin me for 3 YEARS!!!!!!!, LOLOL... I knew it was my breathing, but i wasn't sure how to fix it.......- I'd rather not learn the hard way ( in the ring) ..Why if I can just drill it, lol?...thanks for the video , JT. much appreciated, your the best..--
I would say that it also reduces the amount of pain that you are feeling, so it doesn't only help you with absorbing strikes by tightening your muscles through exhaling, but breathing is also done in different forms of meditation to reduce pain and stuff, by my opinion focusing on your brain takes your focus off the pain so you are actually better off, super important advice, your knowledge and enthusiasm about giving information about boxing is beyond everything I've ever seen, thanks from Czech Republic buddy

For me in a good glove I look for a good fit on my hands, a nice flat punching surface, and great knuckle protection that won't bottom out, protecting my hands is my number one focus. And a nice tight fit on my wrist. Good luck, thanks for all the info.
best boxing channel ever
I never realized how important breathing on defense was. Great advice! You always put out the best content JT!
+Micah B. thank you Micah!
+JT Van V
This is so interesting.
thanks for making us stronger.
+JT Van V i hate to tell you but id take the term beginner off this, cause youre right this is somewhat learned over time but this is the best way of teaching it i have heard, amazing video
+brad harris If you start doing this as a beginner it will get easier and more natural over time. what great videos full of great knowledge!
+brad harris haha i hear what you are saying. thank you!. putting "beginner" often gets me more views so its more of a youtube tactic
When I first started sparring I was flinching every time someone throws a punch but I figured out if I stay relaxed it was so much easier to spar
I put a medicine ball on the floor. I get into a Pushup position above it with my stomach over the ball. I drop from this position and exhale. This helps me to simulate getting hit. It does not take long to learn to exhale.
that's a good idea
This is by far the best boxing channel on youtube, you answered all the questions i had, great work, keep it up !

NEVER a useless video!!! Always in tip top A-Grade condition. Awesome advice even for experienced boxers. Keep up the good work. Kudos from Greece!
+Christos Balafas Thank you Christos!
Best boxing education channel
Thank you. first time I sparred I was exhausted. I like the UFC brand gloves in 10 oz. & MMA style; they feel great and have good wrist support.
Every now and then I come back to some of these earlier videos that focus on beginners, even though I've been boxing for a few years now, just to remind myself of the fundamentals. It's easy to forget and pick up bad habits which often equals bad results in sparring.

+Dave Diggler cool, let me know how it goes after a month
your videos are the best i've seen. literally learning so much from just a few of them. really good detail.
Thanks for another great boxing video JT! Best of luck with your glove design. I am looking for durability in a glove. The seams on the inner palm always start ripping and along the Velcro cuff. Good Padding over the knuckles is a must also. Hit it hard!
JT, Thank you! I did not think about it. But it is very important moment! You are rock!

Brilliant video JT

Thanks for all the great advice it helps a lot
You really have to say this for me to know what I'm missing. Thanks a lot!
thanks JT. you da man!
I would always wonder why im so gassed when its only the 3-4th round and holding my breath maked so much sense. Thank you.
+Pavel Pek Thank you Pavel
Thanks for this information.
Really nice points.i am boxer from india...i really appretiate your work.working really well for me.
This is very helpful.
Thank you for the video!!
Yo JT.., your videos are awesome!! I'm a 33 y.o. Brazilian US police officer, who loves BJJ. I always wanted to learn boxing. I watched one of your videos where you talk about Rocky Balboa and Mike Tyson. Great picks by the way😉👍. Anyways.. your videos are helping me tremendously with my boxing training, I subscribed to your Chanel and bought you boxing app which is really cool. I just want to take a couple minutes to thank you for your hard work. If you ever come to New Hampshire please post something about it! If you could please post a video about the punches and when to use them. Thanks!
I think breathing is the second most important think in boxing after standing properly. Great video man.
definitely something to protect my hands. me personally. maybe something inside to have a more solid grip to the glove.
Yo, this is good stuff man, thanks! Dig your videos!
great tips as usual!
Great tips and presented perfectly. Thank you. Will take a lot of good things away from that.
very good thanks
Thank you JT
i believe that defence is one of the most important things in boxing and i noticed that when i am trying to learn how to fight as a southpaw that i am leaving a lot more holes and my footwork is a little off and i now know that it lakes a lot of practice to fully master it.
loved it, thanks alot.❤
Excellent.
wow very helpful thanks!!
More I learn about boxing more I realize how little I know and what a beginner I am. You just gave me a Key insight. I always say to the kids, "Why you holding your breath when I making you block? Breathe!" (this is during mostly fitness boxing. By the way the flexmitts are excellent for this) But never putting together that was my biggest weakness in sparring! And my coach not acknowledging this either. Question time:
What about slipping and ducking? Is this a good time to catch a breath?
So is part of figuring out your opponent's rhythm is figuring out when they're inhaling?
You were saying that a basic movement number is 8 (Another key)... Would training someone to go to 16, 24 or more movements be an advantageous technique in a fight? Bringing the opponent into deep waters as it were.
Lastly I got to watch some Sugar Ray Leonard flurries where he batters his opponents with many shots to see if I can see when he breathes!
My problem with gloves in general, using them with different people, is wrist weakness versus knuckle weakness. Too many variables. Hand wraps (sometimes tape)help to counter this but... not experience enough to know how to address both. But thumb stitching -- there has to be a balance between protection and flexibility for bag mitts in my opinion for personal use. You don't want to always be taking your gloves on and off to put in mouth piece or drink from a bottle of water or hit the timer... But I also don't want to jam my thumb when I'm getting tired working endurance and my technique is slipping...
Thank you again!
+Andrew A. A. you can but it's still better to exhale on those, I would only inhale if you slipped or ducked your way out of range, as opposed to slip/duck then fire
JT thank you very much for this essential advices on breathing and boxing. I don´t know what is most difficult either to be relaxed while being hit or at my dentist seat (as he suggest to reduce pain :-).
Probably the best boxing tutorial in the whole internet. Congratulations and regards from Madrid.
+Javier Moreno haha that's true i hate the dentist
thanks for the info.. I used to exhale on throwing yet turn into a block and hold my breath when on defense.. gas pretty quick,
+oscar sanchez mendoza thanks Oscar
You alway's have great video's Thank you !.
excellent video. man
This has helped me so much. Thank you :)
Thank you!
For me in a good glove I look for a good fit on my hands, a nice flat punching surface, and great knuckle protection that won't bottom out, protecting my hands is my number one focus. And a nice tight fit on my wrist. Good luck, thanks for all the info.
+Jack Neville thank you Jack, I know what you mean about the bottoming out, its important.
