Grew up hearing the train every Sunday, tooting in the distance. moved away but returned to take my 2 boys for a ride when they were younger. Brought back memories. Your adventures are fabulous love seeing where you go in my own country. Keep it up.
This is pretty cool. I love that it is run by younger people. The steam engines in NZ were much smaller than the amazing (and huge) engines they had in the USA.
There were larger "line haul' locos that went between major cities- Search '' The Kingston Flyer" Glenbrook uses a Tank Engine- like Thomas cos its a hit with the kids. plus the expense and impracticallity of a 70mph loco on an 8 mile track is a waste.
Not true to some extent. They actually took one of NZ's huge main trunk line engines to the states to compare it with theirs in the 1950's. I think you can find one or two on You Tube. th-cam.com/video/LSrVY1dp-8M/w-d-xo.html
Meanwhile, Glen and Mado have been out of the country for quite some time. At least they show us how the sausage is made. Poppy reveals it's late April.
There is nothing better than a ride on a Steam Engine (Train). You feel the life of the machine. Puff, Steam, and the moving parts. Then you have movement. Those are the good times. Thank you for sharing. Regards from South Africa 🇿🇦.
Hello KIAORA from New Zealand town of Waiuku where the Glenbrook steam trains live ,I was quite surprised that you and Mado navigated your way to take in the ride of the steam train .At the closing part of the video young man Ben was standing in front of the station clock whilst you were getting a coffee and refreshments, such dedication are the mighty steam train crews all volunteers God speed 🚅
Awesome guys. Also check out Motat, Museum of transport and technology, around the corner is Keith park airfield, an amazing air museum in a massive hangar. You can get a tram form the Motat to Keith Park. Good value and good coffee too. Only 10 minutes fro m Auckland central. :)
Yes we can, and do, but not as freely as we once could (getting to ride in the cab of a steam loco on KiwiRail's network isn't possible anymore as far as I am aware). On most if not all preserved railways (such as the GVR) if the cab isn't full with volunteers, the trip won't pass through a tunnel, and you ask nicely it is usually possible to ride up front. It helps if you know either the driver or fireman and/or the volunteers. Also Steam Incorporated in Paekākāriki usually have an open day once a year where you can ride in the cab for a run up to the end of the yard and back, and even drive one of the locos with guidance if you want to for a small fee (I think it was $20 last time). I've driven a couple of steam locos (Ab 608 & Ja 1271) and gone for a ride in the cab on KR's network several times (before those got restricted). I've got a playlist here of some of the rides I've been on:- th-cam.com/play/PLFihE3LG5o7yFEAjm30Kyiq5p-XCT0516.html&si=z6G2TKYrrazK0feL
I was the driver that day and it was a pleasure having you both along for the ride! Always love sharing our passion with other people.
Glenbrook is an unrated, undiscovered gem here on NZ.
The only gem in the glenbrook area is M*th

very cool... been to Waiuku several times (brother-in-law owned a medical practice there)... Glenbrook once also.. but never on a steam train
We also have steam train in Christchurch, along with a Vintage Village complete with working coal range in the old cottage etc
That looked so much fun!
oh my, I've been to Glenbrook and had no idea they do the high tea - have to return. Glad you enjoyed it so much.
It's been a feature for the last 4 or 5 years. Often sells out in advance

Damn yeah they must be. I saw the poppies but didn't click that that was 3 months ago now.
Yes, they said they had videos saved to upload,
I thought you were on the Orient Express for a minute. I love the enthusiasm from the volunteers. Great clip G & M

As an nz aucklander born n raised I must say I never heard of this place 😂
Really glad you enjoyed it
I was there on opening day, I think 1977 or 78, it was excellent
Awesome
Great wet weather activity
I used to live in Waiuku. Beautiful little town
Hi Kia Ora
Got an opportunity to experience ❤
It was awesome

Nice to see the train drivers wearing the ANZAC poppy
Very much a standard practice. On ANZAC weekend (or the closest one to ANZAC day) there will sometimes be New Zealand flags put onto the engine.
Just love steam trains, so thanks for that.
Kia Ora kōrua for more NZ content yay 🥰🥰 love trains and high tea 😂
I attended a wedding on the train.
Lovely wet feeezing Manukau day😂👍
Hello namaste I'm from nepal❤❤❤
I like steam buns
What an excellent video! Great job, guys. And Mado, your Maori is very good for a German chick. :)
Omg NZ has a train?!? I guess since NOBODY ever heard of it, they named it after Glen.
How much were the tickets?
25nzd for the normal tickets or 60nzd for the high tea 🙂
Does anybody realise that there was no station here until the railway enthusiasts created it all on a greenfield site? Think about that.
You lucky bums. NZders don,t get to ride up front.

Go to Motat, thats a real society with no rich owners at the top!
I mean, GVR has no rich owners, it’s a charity…
Motat doesn’t run a railway
Glen you should of just filled up a wheelbarrow with your food at the buffet 🤢
