Padanilam Parabrahma Temple is situated at Padanilam in Alappuzha district of Kerala, India. It is one of the major temples in Kerala state. The temple is situated 17 km east of Kayamkulam and 7 km south west of Pandalam. The temple is dedicated to Lord Parabrahma (Omkaram).
Sivaratri is the main festival in the Padanilam temple. Celebrated every year in the honor of the Hindu God, Lord Shiva the meaning of the word 'Shivratri' literally translates to the meaning, 'Great night of Shiva'. Shivratri usually falls on the 13th night and 14th day of the New Moon. Based on the Hindu luni-solar calendar, the festival is celebrated for three to ten days. Since it is celebrated in every lunar months of the year, there are 12 Shivratri every year. This year Maha Shivratri will be observed on the evening of February 24.
Giant effigies of bulls, known locally as kettukala, are pulled to the temple from 15 territories (Kara) of the temple. Some of these have a height of more than 50 feet. The effigies, considered as images of Lord Siva’s vehicle Nandi, are brought to the procession for paying homage to the deity of the temple. As per tradition, each car carries a pair of bulls, one in red and the other in white. While some were comparatively smaller in size, majority were more than 30 ft tall.The ceremonial head fixing of the bulls is usually held a couple of days before the event and the ritual is followed by decorating the effigies with white and red silk and other ornaments. Before being taken out for the procession, the bulls are adorned with garlands from the temple. Its one of the largest festivals in Kerala.
Specialities of Padanilam temple:
• The temple has no compound walls and roofs
• The priests are not necessarily brahmins.
• Padanilam temple neither opens nor closes.
• Non-Hindus are permitted to enter the Padanilam temple.
• Religious harmony is a trademark of Padanilam and it is the real culture of India.
• Bhasma (Holy ash) is given to devotees instead of sandalwood paste.
• There is no proper idol in the temple. Only a stone image of OM and is placed under natural roof formed by tree leaves.
