By either voting for a 3rd Party Candidate, or just not voting at all. (My Goddaughter got fooled like that in 2016, re: Bernie). We have the public "statutory health insurance" which covers 99,9% of Austrians, and (now to the private part) the "private additional insurance" - which just grants you a more luxory accomodation when you're in hospital. - The private insurance doesn't compete with the public insurance and doesn't dump high-risk patients on the public system.
- by the way, Austrian health-care is far better and we spend way less per capita than the US.
Now to New Zealand. As far as i found out via online-research your private insurance companies are non-profit organisations. (I guess they have to be, but I don't know for sure) - and that's the substantial difference to the US
