I battled drug addiction; I’m proud to say I’m seven years sober. If you’ve lived in the depths of addiction’s stranglehold, you know Ryan’s struggles. I look back at the things I did when I was hitting my rock bottom, and they’re unthinkable....I was literally a different person. Luckily I knew I needed help and sought it, which is where so many addicts fall short.

Awesome ! Dude I got three years in November! It sucks so many of it loose the battle. But I was ready to be normal again. After losing my career and then my cousin over dosed and died I was just done with it I hated it. 3 years I still don’t have a good job and I really don’t feel confident I myself and I have so far to go before I can get everything back that I lost. But I can’t get past some of the mental hurdles still. My life is 1000x harder sober but I have no desire to ever go back.

DIE HARD CHARGERS FAN!!!! What Jersey do you wear to games Gail Gilbert, that franchise is God awful. Who loses out on two Mannings? ouch there goes four rings terrible franchise. I was 4 years old when the colts moved to Indianapolis, I've lived right outside Indy my whole life. I sat through some really bad seasons with the colts bro but the one super bowl we got and that run we had with Manning it was worth it then the promise Andrew luck which we kind of got stuck on that one but, as you already know that's what happens when you don't get the right team around good players just like watching Barry Sanders and the lions. I still think the worst super bowl play was not giving Walter Payton a super bowl touchdown. I'm an old school type of fan. At least you stick with your team man just like I did with the colts. I can't believe you went and got Rivers like we did. Kind of funny having rivers on our team I mean I knew he wasn't going to do shit, but I like Philip Rivers because he wore a Indiana Hoosier gym shirt to a post game conference and I'm from the town where the movie Hoosiers was filmed and that's cool. I was just kind of busting your balls man least you stick with the team that you like man you don't move around those people make me sick well and Patriots fans and cowboys fans and that's about it I've never liked the Patriots with the cowboys the chargers or just a sad sad thing to watch every year

I was really surprised when I saw Ryan in the coverage of a college game a year or so ago. Surprised that the sports world had given him another chance, but as I watched and listened to him I realized he definitely knew what he was talking about and was doing a good job. That made me happy that he seems to have finally gotten past his demons and had found some peace.
His era with the Chargers was absolutely awful, but in later years I came to realize that it wasn't entirely his fault. The organization and ownership aptly demonstrated their flaws and shortcomings many times over up to and through their terrible relationship with the city of San Diego and their eventual departure.
I do wish Ryan the best for the rest of his career and life, and would tell him so if I were to ever bump into him somewhere.

As a physician, I want to thank you Flemlo for making this an uplifting and inspirational story about a person who continually reinvented himself to overcome the challenges posed by mental health illnesses that derailed an entire life and professional career. At first, I didn't feel much remorse for Leaf and his narcissism and immaturity, but as soon as you mentioned him finding it difficult to get out of bed in the morning, I immediately saw where this was going and it began to hit hard. Especially when you explained that he didn't understand what was going on or how it was fundamentally affecting him. Clinical depression does this. Tragically, it completely takes away your insight, often causing those afflicted by it to seek help too late, or not at all. It insidiously steals your entire life, your sense of worth, and your sense of purpose. It's extremely difficult to appreciate or comprehend for anyone who hasn't been through it themselves. This is the second video of yours I've watched, and both have frankly been fantastic. You seem like a great person with a great heart and head on your shoulders, and you're are excellent story teller. You've got a new subscriber.

Very respectfully putting it out there, Dr, that narcissistic personality disorder is a diagnosable condition in the latest DSM just like depression is. While there is a stigma around people who suffer from narcissism, they do not necessarily have ASPD, and as such are not relieved from the burden of emotions. These individuals are just as capable of experiencing personal hell and hiding it from the outside world as we are. Not that the DSM is gospel, but there it is

The thing I enjoy the most about these videos is that it highlights the humanity behind these complicated individuals. Society has a habit of applying binary labels (good/bad, success/failure) but so many of these players fall somewhere in between. Who they were on the football field is not always indicative of their value as human beings, and many of these guys have learned from their failures and become better people as a result.
FlemLo - thanks for doing the research and illuminating the lives of these men beyond the bright lights of the NFL.

I saw him do one of the classiest things I've ever heard of a pro QB do.
He was asked by a kid to sign his peewee football on his way out to warm ups before the Seattle game in Seattle the year they had to play on UW field. He told the kid to hang on and he'd give him an autograph after warm ups. The kid sat there on pins and needles waiting in his little Ryan Leaf Jersey while all the guys who sell memorabilia gathered around wanting autographs to sell them.
Leaf finished warmup and went over the equipment guy and took an NFL ball and borrowed a Sharpe, signed the ball, blew on the ink until it was dry, thanked the equipment guy and gave him back his pen and walked over and presented it to the little guy. He ignored the other people and said thank you for being his fan and walked into the locker room.

Listened to an interview that he had with Jim Rome awhile back. Leaf took responsibility for his life and I was blown away.

Bruh That video meant more to me than you know.
Honestly I've always been a huge chargers fan, but I was born in 90, and so all I ever heard were the bad jokes and bad puns and it just really meant so much to me that you did this story. Honestly the last line of the video put me into tears bro.
. . . Being from San Diego my whole life I've lost a lot of friends to drugs and addiction, so to really hear this story, and to see how Ryan could be a 🐐 on the human side of life is inspiring.
Thanks for doing this video. I've been following you for a while now man and as always will be sharing this one and others with friends as you keep putting them out. 💯🙏🙏🙏

Biggest bust of all time? JaMarcus “Purple Drank” Russell may have something to say about that.

Nobody epitomizes the word bust like him. I went to a Raider game against the Falcons and he was so bad that they stopped showing stats on the scoreboard. It was kinda funny to me cause I'm a niner fan but my raider fan dad was sad. 45 to 3 I think but Atl could have scored 70 easy. Russell is the biggest bust for sure because of the expectation. Ryan is a pretty damn close number 2.

Wrong, only the Raiders thought Russell was 1st pick worthy. Everyone thought Leaf and Manning were 1a 1b

I've got it as Russell, but Leafs up there, and the Chargers moved up for him

@@93HonestAbe not true, Russell killed the combine ,arm strength alone, only Calvin Johnson was mocked as possibly better. Teams rarely take a receiver #1 though, especially someone like the Raiders. They had no qb at the time

This is one of my favorites that you've done. Great work on this one. And, I love Ryan's takes as a cfb analyst.

Outstanding video. I was a Colts season ticket holder when they took Manning over Leaf and we where all ready to root for the Bears LOL. Thats the best take on the Leaf story I ever heard
    Thank You
