I love how clean and well kept the trains and stations in Stuttgart are. It shows that it's possible to have a transit system in a nice state if you actually care and invest some money. It's a shame how bad the systems in most other German cities like Berlin or Frankfurt look like. Nice video by the way.
We have something similar is San Francisco. We have streetcars that drive with the cars and have stairs inside the train, but the stairs can raise up mechanically to form a flat surface, allowing them to also serve raised underground station platforms
It was this way in the past in Stuttgart. But then they rebuilt all the stations so they have a high platform and disabled guests can easily board the trains. The automatic stairs got removed in never train versions after that (you stil l can see the remains on older ones, like at 0:27 below the door)
Same concept is found in the Netherlands since 2006 with the Randstadrail connecting zoetermeer to the hague with regiocitadis lightrail trams. In zoetermeer it functions as S-Bahn while in the hague it rides like a tram between the traffic.
It also has characteistics of an S-bahn. Some stations are several kilometers apart and there are trains every 20 mins only for some parts of the system. I find it very interesting. Have been there three times in the past year.
This system used to be metre-guage. For some mad reason it was completely converted to standard-gauge. The third-rail sections are where they didn't get round to removing the metre-gauge rail they had in a dual-gauge transitionary period.
Some of the third rails are still in use today for the historical tram museum. Every sunday there's a service between the museum and the television tower with historical meter gauge trams.
Great video! This reminds me of the T in Pittsburgh, PA, USA, just slightly more German. They use Siemens rolling stock with street running, dedicated ROW, tunnels, subway, bridges, and steep grades. Thanks Beno.

Most U stations in Berlin have exposed wiring coming out of broken concrete.

Waberner Stuttgart has also an S-Bahn operated by DB.

Why they changed to standard gauge is to have larger trains.
