Yes, Santorini is a Greek island with high prices but don't forget that Santorini is one of the most famous destinations worldwide like Ibiza (Spain), Paris, London, NY etc...I don't think the prices in a good restaurant in Manhattan will be better than Santorini!

      Yasou file! Nice to read posts like yours. I'm 63, and my father is from a small scenic mountain village above Nafpaktos, called Perista. He was raised in Patras though. On my mom's side, even though she was a Bronx girl, her mom (my Yiayia) was from a small village near Perista, called Platanos. I've been there many times, and adore them! I was raised in NY and NJ, but remember how my dear father (R.I.P. dad... passed on 2015) used to take my family (my mom and 2 brothers) to Greece almost every summer back in the 70's and early 80's. We even flew Olympic Boeing 707's and 747's from JFK to Athens (I remember how roomy those old school economy class seats were, unlike today). Fast forward to recently, where I took my teenage daughter to Greece for her first time in order to meet her relatives, and to 'trace her roots'! We just came back from Greece a few days ago, where we visited Paros, Nafplio, Monemvasia, and Elefonisos. Stopped in Sparti and Tripoli too. I get happy tears in my eyes just thinking of the beauty and meaningfulness that is Greece to me! LONG LIVE HELLAS!

    Haha Drew says he is deep into Greece. He barely scratches the surface. The guy visits 2 famous islands, and could visit 6000 other islands and misses totally out on the mainland. I dislike uneducated people who claim as if they know what they talk about and miss out on 99.7% of the rest of the country. Which is exactly the case now. The prices he shows is on Santorini if you choose it. But even on Santorini there are plenty places you can eat so much cheaper and heavenly still. and that is Santorini. In Greece food is relatively inexpensive. I pay 25-40 euro for 2 people in most of the places in Greece, and eat divine. Not that this video isn't nice. but this video is not representative for 99% of the rest of the county. The costs are much lower in the rest of the country. I can know. I have visited Greece 60 times

    I booked Santorini for a week in November, way cheaper than now because it is off season - got a three star for $40 a night! Cheap flight from Athens - weather is still good, no tourists = paradise! Of course Drew was spending like crazy for a special occasion for two but normally I can do a Greek Island for a week for $500, all in. Most people spend way too much, because they lack flexibility or they don't do the research. Trust me, most people overpay 70-80%. I can say this with confidence because I have been travelling almost non-stop for 5 years as I go for 100 countries - I HAVE to keep my costs reasonable.

    • @Marco-zt6fz
      @Marco-zt6fz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I Agree with you. Most people overpay. But when you infrom you befor you start the trip, you can defintly dont over pay. You pay local price not tourist prices but needs a little bit time, but its worth. A good advice is, go there where the locals goes. You will eat the real local food for a local price.

I get awesome deals all the time and then realize how much I used to overpay. As long as you are flexible you can save serious loot! The problem is (and I had this problem for years) is that when you are working, usually when you can take a vacation, so can everyone else, so your are paying max dollars. Go off season and watch the rates tumble. Then there are places like Indonesia which are ALWAYS cheap......

    • @Latexhandske
      @Latexhandske 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrianBaileyedtech You are so right, I was out a lot in the 80s and 90s and back then I was not willing to overpay for a bed to sleep in.
      It`s insane to pay 5-10 times more for a meal.......I don`t get it?
      In my mind, Santorini is like Tel Aviv - of course it`s beautiful, but like 500% more then it`s neighbour!
      But, hey - I did something totally crazy once;
      Gothenburg to Stockholm and Hard Rock Cafe over to London and HRC then CONCORDE to New York and HRC over to Toronto and HRC back again in NYC and a "normal BA" over to London and HRC again and then back home to Gothenburg, Sweden.

    Hello, Greek here. I love your channel. Santorini is one of Greece's most, if not the most, expensive island. The cheapest time of the year to visit Santorini is in winter. You will not swim (because of the cold) but will find affordable flights, rooms to rent, etc. (also, u will have a better chance to see one of the most beautiful sunsets of your life). You will find numerous places you can visit with lower prices and the same Greek philoxenia. By law, the 500ml bottle of water costs 0.5 euro in Greece max everywhere. We have some of the cleanest drinkable water in Europe (except for some places that don’t take water from the main line).

      Yes I can definitely see that Greece isn't one of his favorite countries. I mean uploading one video that focuses on how expensive Santorini is... Well I find it overwhelmingly negative especially when you choose to visit Santorini as a luxury destination.
      I liked most of his videos I have watched, but the fact that he has never uploaded anything else for this country other than this... Especially when this is a country that has so so many places to visit with so much culture, heritage, history etc.. has definitely put me off him and I have unsubscibed. I'm sure it won't make a difference for him.

    Santorini is, price-wise, the San Francisco of Greece. Everything is ultra expensive there. Thr kind of pkace where a schoolteacher or a community doctor coming from the rest of the country would not be able to afford rent.

    As people mention before rightfully so, Greece is not Santorini or Mikonos. Both of them are marvelous, but obnoxiously expensive. I'm not gonna suggest islands to visit, because all of them have something unique. But I highly recommend Thessaloniki. Full of nice places to visit and also rich in Sephardic Jewish history. Love your content!

    Some islands in Greece are very touristic and pretty expensive...but when the majority of tourists go there....it is obvious that it will be kind like that...However..there are so many other places and islands that are not than well known , and there you can feel the authentic greek culture and soul...with much less money...Over all Greece remains cheaper than other touristic mediterranean countries like Italy, Spain and France .

    Santorini is completely different from the rest of the country from my experience. You can normally get a skewer of souvlaki, greek salad and rice for a very reasonable price. I would like to see if you travelled in your normal fashion outside of Santorini, you're going to quickly show the people that Greece is far cheaper than the rest of Europe.

    1994 was the time to go! We saw Paros. AndiParos, Santorini, Crete (spent 2 weeks) in pensions, hostels... hiked Samaria Gorge.... (we were 21 as well!!!) SSSOO much fun & so cheap then (15$ a night Cnd; $5 per meal ) we took the ferries between the islands. great adventure.... I think we spent 500$ total in 3 weeks (not including airfare from Ottawa (Canada) which was 385$)

    drew please change your title in this video.. santorini doesn't represent greece especially on prices of every kind of services or goods. as a greek i was there and i have to say that is by far with mykonos the most expensive places here in greece (street corn 7 euros?? come on men, 1,5 euro has almost everywhere). Also Greece is not ATHENS SANTORINI MYKONOS and back... you missed the good part.

    In 1985 I stayed in Fira. $25 a night which included breakfast. $20 a day with all the gas you can burn for a motor scooter. As far as food goes dinner, the fanciest meal with alcohol was about $15 a person you could not spend anymore even if you wanted to. The best thing on that island is the sit in a bar, set in the bluffs and watch the sun go down. The beaches are made up of black lava stones, scorching hot, not the best beaches. And as far as living there very difficult, you can't buy a computer, refrigerator or have a shoe repaired.Just like Venice actually worse than Venice. Another thing all the fresh water is brought in daily, by a boat tanker.

    So, the title of the video should have been "How expensive is Santorini?" Even in Santorini, you could spend way less money than you did on that video. How? 1. Choose a low-season time, such as May or October. 2. Do not rent a room in Caldera. 3. Rent a motorbike to move around the island. 4.Find where the locals eat, and avoid tourist traps.

    That thing about no free water in Europe, well, in Greece they do give, it is rude not to. However, you are on Santorini and just like in many islands, the tap water is not drinkable, hence, no free water. To recap, no free water in most of Europe, definitely free water in Greece, unless the area you're in does not have drinkable tap water. Also the 500ml bottle is 0.5euros in Greece, everywhere, by law, so you do not have to pay 8euros for fancy water.

    I got really super lucky during the pandemic in 2021. What I paid now for 6 days was under 2k there. Now it's quadruple now. I suggest people stay at a nice place for 1-2 days in Oia then move to a cheaper location for the rest of the week. That's what we did.

    I am Greek from the island of Crete. I do not understand why all tourists fall for the Santorini trap. This island is so overrated and so expensive and it's less beautiful than what they make it look. Just opt for Crete instead. You get a lot more bang for your buck. Try visiting Chania, Rethymno or Aghios Nikolaos. Every place on Crete is gorgeous and the history of that island tops even the capital of Greece Athens.

    i worked in santorini for about 4 months and all i can say about the place is that its hell on earth for the workers... 7/7 days work with 10 to 12 hours each day. i guess its a beautiful place but in my personal opinion its not worth going there at all...greece has many islands with similar scenery and vibe with less than half the price and less tourists.. i guess it is romantic but is it really worth it for the struggle u gonna face parking or waiting in lines to get literally anywhere...

    there are many more places in greece you can visit that are just as beautiful as santorini without happing to pay as much if you want the feel of a bustling city you could visit thessaloniki the second biggest city in greece while for island chalkidiki is also very nice its essentially just as amazing as santorini without being as expensive
