Many years ago I was stationed overseas in the Navy and managed to get leave approved for Christmas. Wanted to surprise the family, so I didn't tell anyone I was coming. When I arrived, nobody was there -- they'd gone on vacation several hundred miles away. Spent the few days I had in the empty house, then caught the plane back to my duty station. It was kind of sad.

The problem with these military style surprises is that they are all over social media and the love ones at home will always be expecting a surprise from there military relation spoiling the surprise. It is nice for the viewing audience but as I mentioned everyone will be expecting.
