Redskins fan here but I have grown to have an affinity for this era’s St Louis Cardinals. Lomax, Otis Anderson, Stump Mitchell, Roy Green, Pat Tilley. Just a fun team to watch. They had a nice run 1982-84. They just had the misfortune of sharing the division with the top two teams in the NFC for two of those seasons and in 84 as those two dipped slightly, the Giants started their rise under Parcells.
Back then when every game was worth watching it's a whole lot better than today NFL games from the '90s on back to the '70s were the best time to watch NFL football 🏈
@@EdsterIII Indeed-- not just the games, but the broadcasts; these here on NFL '83 on NBC (Berman, Axthelm, Marash, Macatee and Rashad) far outpace who is on The NFL Today now with CBS' AFC coverage.

Wowwww..I remember those “Kickoff” segments sponsored by Old Spice….legendary Yankee PA announcer, Bob Sheppard with the intro and narrated by legendary actor, Eli Wallach…what memories
I love watching these old games. Very strange not to see the score bug on the screen. Amazing they didn't think to do that until Fox got the NFL in 1994
Amazing too that once the NFL started it in 94 all the other sports immediatly went to displaying the score as well in 1995. You really had to pay attention back then to know what was going on, certainly you weren't spoon fed stats like today.
During the 16-game, 28-team era of the NFL (1978-1994), the scheduling formula generally kept fifth-place teams in the five-team divisions isolated from playing non-fifth-place teams, especially in inter-conference games. So if one but not both of the Seahawks and Cardinals finished fifth in their division, that meant they would not play each other the following year, even if the full-division rotation brought their divisions together. They would have played in 1980 and 1986, when the AFC West and NFC East were matched up, but St. Louis finished last in 1979 and 1985, wiping Seattle matchups off the schedule.

25:22, On the pre game show Pete Axthelm was pretty rough on Marc Gastineau, yea he was cocky and arrogant and was really the originator in the early 80s of over the top player celebrations but the guy could flat out bring it when it was game time. Went on to lead the league in 83 & 84 in sacks & he was 6'5-260 lbs and could run the 40 yard dash in under 5 seconds, unheard of for Defensive Ends/linemen in that era.
You have a great point on that; even so, I've gotta be honest with you-- if I made a great play, and several others helped me do it (whether on offense or defense), I wouldn't be all about me, myself and I like Gastineau was then; I'd give those who helped me (whether it was offensive blockers or defensive linemen or linebackers) just as much credit as I got.

I want the NFL to adopt college OT rules. That would be a great way to end ties once and for all. Many great college games since 1996 have been multi-OT thrillers, including the 2003 Fiesta Bowl, still the best birthday present I ever received (the game in the Eastern Time Zone ended in the early hours of 1/4/2003 - my 13th birthday). A national TV NFL game going multi OTs under the college rules would be regarded as one of the greatest NFL games ever.
