- Gday, this tailstock chuck is a design from Max at Swan Valley Machineshop, please check out Max's TH-cam channel, there's a lot of great videos to watch,
I made a tailstock chuck about a year ago but a mix of poor machining and a rush job its not that good so its time to build a decent one, I hope you enjoy this series and thanks for watching, Cheers...
Matty, you run yourself short . You really shouldn't as you do very good work. Always a pleasure watching you work in your shop.
Cheers
Gday Chris, thanks for the kind words mate, I try my best, thanks for watching and commenting, cheers
Matty, thank you for posting, I find peace and a a bit ZEN watching your videos. With Covid, a lawsuit with my landlord, the falling apart of numerous associate relationships, I love the peace if find in your shows, Thanks , really thanks
Gday, I’m pleased to here the videos are helping you and your enjoying them mate, keep ya chin up, it will come good, appreciate you watching and commenting, cheers
Nice project Matty👍👍tailstock chuck is very useful...look forward to part2
Gday, there not something that gets used everyday but priceless when you have to, thanks for watching and commenting mate, cheers
Nothing wrong with that welding Matty. I've been welding for 40 years and built machines that cost millions. You've got it well in there and it won't let go, trust me ! When it comes to glueing metal, I know my shit 😁😁😁
Gday Neil, I don’t think it’s going to come apart in a hurry, I’ve done quite a bit of welding over the years but don’t clam too be an expert which is the reason I don’t really like to show it much, thanks for watching and commenting mate, cheers
Seen Max's version but glad to see another one
Gday, Max’s turned out a masterpiece, if mine turns out half as good I’ll be over the moon, thanks for watching and commenting, cheers
Welds don't need to be pretty to be good, nice project, great to see Max sharing his drawings 😀, very skilled guy, but don't do yourself a disservice Matty.
Thanks for sharing
Gday, the weld turned out alright in the end, Max has been very helpful with this project, thanks for watching and commenting, cheers
G'day Matty , Giving the Jake a workout there !
Welds look good , nothing to be ashamed of and not worth machining away .
Gday Ian, the shop owner on the corner used to get a bit emotional but I don’t know why😂, I was just having a lift fun, thanks for watching and commenting mate, cheers
Hi Matty. YT is a great community and it was kind of Max to share the drawings. Nothing wrong with that weld, its going to be machined down anyway. Biggest worry when welding is that it didn't warp. Regards Kevin
Gday Kevin, The TH-cam community is something great to be apart of, the plans from Max are very easy to follow, certainly did a nice job, Thanks for watching and commenting mate, Cheers
between you and max this should turn out really well
Gday, i'll be over the moon if it turns out half as good as Max's, Thanks for watching and commenting, Cheers
Great job Matty, you are too modest pal, nice work and the stick welding is smashing 👴🏻👍
Gday Terry, i've been told this a few times now mate, Thanks for watching and commenting, Cheers
Definitely on my list of projects. But I will probably wait until I think I need one. Nicely done - looking forward to seeing it come together.
Gday, there a handy tool to have about that’s for sure, thanks for watching and commenting mate, cheers
Great project Matty and good start! You won't go wrong following Max's plans. Nothing wrong with that welding mate, for this job I would be inspecting the weld to the following two criteria : Is it coming apart..... No, Is it going on the mantelpiece....... No, then its a pass lol. Cheers, Jon
Gday Jon, if this turns out half as good as Max's ill be like a dog with 2 dicks, ive done quite a bit of welding over the years but dont like to film it, im not that good, Thanks for watching and commenting mate, Cheers
Well , my father, forced on me the 3 standards, 1.)will it last for 30 years? 2.) Are you proud of it?
Hi Matty That's, great that Max sent you, his drawings. Your welding of the parts looks good to me. I don't have flood coolant on my lathe, so I just use a cool mist set up with cutting oil. it makes a little bit of smoke but I can deal with that. Cheers
Gday, I really need to put flood coolant on the lathe as well as a TouchDRO unit, appreciate you watching and commenting mat, cheers
Hi Matty neat work. Nice video work. Your lathe is very smooth and quiet.
Gday Paul, Thanks for the kind words, the lathe really is smooth and quite, Thanks for watching and commenting, Cheers
Interesting video; looking forward to the rest of the series.
Gday Graham, this is an interesting build with a lot of tight tolerances, certinally going to put me to the test mate, Thanks for watching and commenting, Cheers
Looking good Matty 👍👍👍 It's great to see someone drilling a large hole on a lathe and using the correct slow rotation speed for the drill size. Cheers, Alan.
Gday Alan, It’s amazing how many do run there drills to quick, I’ve always been told the key to keep the drill sharp is to not burn it up and run them slow, thanks for watching and commenting mate, cheers
That's a good project. Thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks very much Craig, appreciate you watching and commenting mate, cheers
seems like a decent job, good work! if i had to say probably not how i'd choose to do it.
i think if i made one;
i'd make a second quill for the tail stock that winds all the way in the tail stock
with some beefy AF tapered roller bearings on the part sticking out as close to the tail stock as possible for support
with the chuck adapter plate/hub well supported by those two big bearings.
Gday, I didn’t think of making a new quill, certainly work, thanks for watching and commenting, cheers
Hello Matty,
A lethal combination, Max's plans and your desire to constantly improve... I'm looking forward to watching this series...
Take care.
Paul,,
Gday Paul, I really hope this works out ok, if its half as good as Max's ill be over the moon mate, Thanks for watching, Cheers
Great job Matty. I used to be one of the best Professional welders but now my 70 year old eyes and arthritic joints and trifocal glasses have ruined my beautiful welding . Now if it meets the job i am doing then i do not loose any sleepover it. Max is also a big favorite of mine. I'll be here for part 2. Thanks again for all your hard work . You always do Grade A work.
Gday Terry, im sure you could still weld much better then most people mate, Appreciate you watching and commenting, Cheers
G'day Matty. I'm sure you'll make a good job of it. Cheers Peter
Thanks very much Peter, I’ll do my best mate, cheers
Great start Matty, top job so far. Looking forward to part two. Tony
Gday Tony, thanks very much mate, so far so good, Thanks for watching and commenting, Cheers
G'day Matty, just back from a few days away, looking forward to catching up with this mate
Gday Ralfy, congratulations on you winnings mate, I hope you enjoyed the break, Cheers
good vid fella love the jake mine had a straight through pipe nice old dog cheer bud
Gday Paul, this was a Freightliner I drove for a while, series 60 set @500, bloody good tipper setup, the shop owner on the corner didn’t like the noise 😉, thanks for watching mate, cheers
Very nice cooperation between two of my favorite channels! 😉
Well played Matty.
Thanks very much for the kind words, truely appreciated, cheers
Off to a good start there mate . The bit of scrap that i used for that part , i thought was mild black bar but it was some sort of bastard hard stuff ! 👍
Gday Max, so far so good, Im sure this bit was 4140 or something very close to it, Thanks for watching and commenting mate, Cheers
@@MattysWorkshop Yes , looked a bit 4140'ish !
Looking good so far. I need to make one at some point. So many projects to do.
Gday Tom, the project list never seems to get shorter, I’d like to see you with one, very handy tool to have mate, thanks for watching, cheers
Looking good Matty
Thanks very much Paul, appreciate you watching and commenting mate, Cheers
Off to a great start. Thx for the vid.
Thanks very much mate, Appreciate you watching and commenting, Cheers
Nice and interesting video,i really enjoyed it
Gday, thanks for the positive feedback, appreciate you watching and commenting, cheers
I look forward to having one of my own, with a steady rest it'll make parting bigger pieces a lot less exciting.
Gday Jim, very handy tool to have that’s for sure, appreciate you watching and commenting mate, cheers
Well done mate 👏 👍
Gday Trevor, thanks very much mate, your quite welcome to have the old tailstock chuck mount for your lathe, thanks for watching and commenting, Cheers
All ahead full so far mate. I wouldn’t be worried about the weld look, as you said it’s gotta be turned down. Look’n forward to the next part. Oh, while I remember How’d the young fella like the sliding bevel you made him?
Gday Mark, full steam ahead here mate, no holding back, Trent really likes the bevel square but doesn't want to get it scratched, he said its to nice to use, Thanks for watching, Cheers
Hi Matty,
Great video. Do you sharpen your own drill bits? Those spirals coming off were great. A video on drill sharpening would help alot of People I think. Keep up the good work.
Gday Scott, I do sharpen my own drills, big ones are ok but the smaller ones I still struggle with, more I can't see good enough I think, Thanks for watching and commenting mate, Cheers
No matter how the welds look. If it works, it works. And after machining it will look just fine.
Gday, I don’t think there’s any chance of it falling apart in a hurry, thanks for watching and commenting mate, cheers
Good work, sir!
Thanks very much, appreciate you watching and commenting, Cheers
Hi Matty, I recently made one using a ford laser front wheel bearing, double race prepacked with grease for life, sealed and preloaded.
Mine has a 4" 3 jaw chuck but in my humble opinion 3MT same as your lathe just does not cut it, not rigid enough.
Need a bigger lathe!
Gday Willem, thats a good idea using a car hub, id like a bigger lathe one day but this lathe does a fantastic job, Thanks for watching and commenting mate, Cheers
Looking good Matty👍👍👍👍👍👍
Kev uk
Thanks very much Kev, hope your well mate and thanks for watching, Cheers
Looks good! When is part 2 coming out? 👍🏻
Gday, part 2 should be out next week sometime mate, Cheers
Looking good so far Matty. Welding is fine. Better than mine. So was that your exhaust brake in the truck.
Gday Steve, im no welder but can make things stick together, the last clip was me just having a bit of fun on the engine brake, the shop owner on the corner used to get a bit emotional with the noise, thanks for watching and commenting mate, Cheers
That's something I need to build, how do I get those blue prints matty? The weld job looks like it will work just fine to me, excellent job and great video, keep'um coming..
Gday, get in touch with Max Grant from Swan Valley Machineshop will be your best bet, thanks for watching and commenting mate, cheers
Hi Matty,
Have you tried increasing either the feed or spindle speed when using the WNMG trigon to get the chip breaking working so as to avoid the stringy swarf? It loves to work hard. would not bother with the cutting oil, either dry or full flood coolant.
Andy UK
Gday Andrew, I have tried speeds and feeds and done ok, I really need to get flood coolant on the lathe soon, thanks for watching and commenting mate, cheers
Awesome great for machining pipe
Gday Jason, these are also really handy for shafts that have no centres in the ends, there the type of tool I won't use often but bloody handy when I do, Thanks for watching and commenting mate, Cheers
You have a bit of OCD. I completely understand. I often think that my work is subpar too. That's something I understand.
Gday, I do have a it of OCD but i've always been the same, Thanks for watching and commenting, Cheers
Gday, Truly appreciate you watching and commenting, Cheers
Nice work. Thanks for the look.
Gday John, appreciate you watching and commenting, Cheers
