  • Join me on a hiking loop to Mt Baldy via the narrow Devils Backbone in 4K, return via the Ski Hut trail. The loop is about 10 miles long and has an elevation gain of 4000ft. The hike starts at Manker Flat and goes up to Baldy Notch, before continuing on to Devils Backbone. From there I go to the summit and then down the Ski hut trail, which is steeper but shorter, and then looping back to Manker Flat.

      Thanks Mark, yes, I think music, and more often than not, wrong music, is used too much for youtube outdoors films. Thanks for noticing and the kind words, glad you like it:-)

    I hiked around Baldy a lot 40 years ago as a kid. When you're a kid, you can hike all day in the mountains without stopping and suffer no ill effects. If you're getting older you'd better do some preparation first and make sure you're in shape to be hiking to 10k feet and then back. This morning I walked up the Falls road to the notch and it kicked this 67 year old couch potato's butt. Just be aware folks. Going to the peak is no walk in the park. I did it last 15 years ago going up the Ski Hut trail. That's probably the way I'll go when I try it again. Don't think I'll be up to doing the full loop. Maybe in the next life when I'm young again.

    Excellent video! Did this today. Devil's Backbone to Baldy Bowl.
    I always thought youtube videos made Devil's Backbone look more narrow and dangerous than it really is due to camera distortion. I was very very wrong.
    I wasn't liking Devil's Backbone but got from 8:10 to the orange rock at 8:49. I don't like heights and had to turn back. A barefoot guy passed me and I watched what he did. He got very low and looked at the wall as much as possible instead of down. So I then did the same thing except with shoes and a lot less ninja like. Had no problems with any other parts of the trail. It's a relatively short section but I will never do it again.

    Thanks for not filming with a go pro camera on a helmet or pack. Every go pro footage makes it seem like you could slip and free fall at any moment, as it exaggerates the slopes on the sides. I know people slip in the winter time and perish but the trail is doable on a warm day with no snow.

    I climbed up to Mt. Baldy back in 1988 using the Bear Canyon Trail. I recall about 7 miles one way and about 5,000 feet elevation gain. It was good to be young. I really enjoy your videos, especially your Norway adventures.

    Sorry but the Devils Backbone is whimpy. We went through it today and didn't even know it. We thought it was further ahead. I was like, what? I'm not saying this to brag, but rather to say don't be afraid of it, the videos make it look more scary than it is. We didn't even know we were on it. Yes high up, but mostly a normal part of a trail.

    Watching this video made feel sad. When I lived in L.A I loved hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains. I miss living down there so much. I love the Transverse Ranges & the deserts of Southern California. IF I ever get back down there I will hike the Devils Backbone trail. Your hike at 10:15 looked absolutely treacherous. I can see why there have been deaths & rescues on that trail. When I climbed Mt Baldy in 2007 I took the Manker Flat trail which goes past the ski hut. Thank you for putting this video on here for me to watch

    I want to do this hike, but the fear of heights thing has me here trying to get an idea. I'm positive it's worse when you're actually there, but how much worse? LOL I'm told if you go over, you may not be able to stop for quite awhile, if at all. At 7:50 on the right I can see that possibility. Still thinking. Watching more. Thanks sooo much for this video. At 10:03 and beyond, pretty much convinced me. This hike at my age probably isn't for me. Going over rocks when tired, Eh! Great video!

    Very nice! I can see that last stretch of Baldy summit from my front window (north side of the mountain). I have to say those catwalk sections of the Devil's Backbone Trail don't look fun. I can't believe people are trying to hike up there now in winter, when it really requires serious mountaineering skills after the snow falls. I believe there are two people currently lost up on Baldy near the bowl and part of a search and rescue mission (including the actor Julian Sands, whom I believe did have proper mountaineering training but was alone). Several others have died in the last few weeks. It's been difficult to impossible for rescue crews to get in there because of high winds, ice, and avalanche risk. Many with no crampons, no helmets, not prepared to bivy, and no training. SMH.

      @@NorwegianXplorer I think a big part of the problem is that Mt. Baldy is in L.A.'s backyard, so people mistakenly think it's an easy day hike. I was an EMT and part of a search and rescue unit in another part of the US, and we frequently had to do missions because of people's poor planning. Sadly, many were body recovery and not live rescue missions. One of the lost was found yesterday on Baldy, thankfully alive and able to walk out with assistance after 3 days on the mountain.

      @@NorwegianXplorer OMG, that is just crazy. But I hear those stories a lot. There's a debate right now about the Forest Service needing to issue permits for some of the higher elevations in California because of people like that guy you encountered. Rescues are putting responders' lives in danger and burning resources needed elsewhere. They have signs up at Baldy now urging people to avoid hiking there without the right alpine equipment, but there's no enforcement. I mean, I can't drive up there without chains on my tires. Climbers shouldn't be able to go above the Ski Hut (or wherever the danger line is) without the proper seasonal gear IMO. Also, just to day hike in Denali, I had to do bear awareness training at the visitor center there.

    • @NorwegianXplorer
      @NorwegianXplorer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The danger starts above the tree hut, but you can not really outlaw nature for people that are not prepared, people are just gonna find other places to go
