My dad (RIP) always grossed my mom out by just grappling an apple off the tree and eating it. She would tell him he was going to eat a worm. He would say back to mom,” protein Rosie no worries.” And wink at us all. Then he would tell us that not all fruit is grocery store pretty. But it is always more nutritious right from the plant. Then he would explain that we just cut any bugs out and use the best parts , feed the pigs or chickens the rest. He was from a family of 8 children and they were farmers.

I was raised gardening and canning. Times were hard and mom and dad did all they could to put food on the table. There were 9 of us. Right after WWII. I still enjoy it. Plus I've learned new skills like freezing and dehydrating. I applaud you.

Food waste in our country is absolutely grotesque! It is wasteful on a magnitude that should bother everyone and such a disregard for resources and life of animals! Preparing your own and working hard for it brings an appreciation as well as being able to trust the ingredients. Teaching your kids to ‘waste not, want not’ is fabulous!

I don’t homestead, but do have a garden, chickens, and do buy from local farmers…like my yearly beef, I know the farmer, his methods, and the taste is amazing. I recognize I can’t do it all, but I can source things locally, get to know the farmers, and preserve those things and still feel I’m doing better for my family.

I wish that I had land that I could grow a big garden and have animals to process.
For one, when I did can, there wasn't any pesticide or stuff like that in what I canned.
With processing my own cattle and hogs, I knew what they are and no antibiotics.
It was so much healthier for me and my family.
That was 25 years ago when I lived on an acreage.

I grew up on a farm and I still do a lot of the same skills. People need to understand that what is worse than a worm in the apple is 1/2 a worm. lol I think hard times are coming and people are going to learn these survival skills whether they like it or not.

I actually miss gardening, canning, freezing, and raising my own meat.
The initial cost was high when getting started but oh, so worth it.
I still go to the Farmers Market and get vegetables bulk and can.
I don't do as much as I did when I had my own garden, but I still enjoy (fresh) canned vegetables.
I'm hoping to purchase a side of beef and a hog from my Aunt later this fall.
I will can some of that meat also.
I like having canned meat for when I go camping with friends.

It's hard work, homesteading, but it sure pays to know what's in our food. I do it for the same reasons as you. I also think that there are going to be tough times ahead, and I want a nice backstock of canned goods and animals to have around to supplement the rest of our food supply. I really don't think people realize the severity of the situation at hand. We've got to get back to the old ways. Funny story, my 3year old grand daughter was over here, she has her own raised bed to choose what she wants to grow. They were over here a while ago, and she had seen me do this before, she went over, squeezed the center of the cabbage, observed the cabbage head was fully formed and ready, and said to my daughter, " mama, this one's ready to pick." I about died laughing, especially that she was completely correct. She's learning a lot. Motivates me more when little things like this happen.😂

me and the mister use to live in a small cabin in the woods. off grid. i had a garden. it was lovely...but hubby is blind now and i am glad we made the move to town.Your video's keep me connected in my mind and heart to the homesteader lifestyle. we moved here and our huge back yard hardly had anything in it. Now its filled with raised beds and tons of plants. gooseberries, red currants, grapes and rhubarb, plums! i love seeing all u do. this years season is so odd. sunday the low is 38 degrees here gf. i have had one ripe tomatoe. i may be making up some jars of canned green tomato mincemeat. love seeing your lifestyle. i loved especially how u get the huge leaves from cabbage that most toss out. also i found out this year.if u dont pull up your cabbages but cut them off. they grow back more cabbages. i have a mess of cabbages i cut off. now they have three heads of new cabbages growing. hugs and have a lovely day.sorry this is so long!

Apple picking season time. Last year I home canned 12 quarts of pie filling and 10 pints of low sugar apples. I plan to double the low sugar apple recipe . I dont have animals. I do buy meat from local farmers and some veggies that I cant grow. This year we are adding apple trees. I like to pick apples at orchard, but to save money I ask for box of 2nds. Im worn out from preserving but I'm blessed to be able to give family good food. 50 pounds of berries in freezer😮

But I do can food and stock my freezers full. I also keep a large stock of pantry staples. But I still feel like I should do more with the way things are these days food prices are crazy high. I preserve food because 1) I really enjoy the process 2) I like knowing what I put into my food for the family and 3) For my health. I have servere fibromyalgia and eating things without all the preservatives they use in the food in the stores throws me into severe inflammation and pain. I don’t grow my own food because I live in a condo so I have found a great Mennonite farm close by and buy from them. It’s a learning curve.I also buy meat from a local locker that uses local farmers.

I was talking to a friend of mine that I'm going to get some cow's tongue real soon and make it.
My Aunt has some from butchering a few of her cows.
She shares her beef with her kids.
She said that they all think that cow's tongue is gross so I'm going over there next week to get at least 3 packages of frozen cow's tongue.
She did make me laugh when she said her kids ate but they all thought it was stew meat. She never did tell them the truth. 😂

I love homemade everything even with my family grown - much better and healthier than store bought.
I do peel apples when cooking if they aren’t organic simply because they are one of the top foods sprayed with chemicals.
I use a smaller knife and cut the apple around the worm holes so do not throw so much out, but it does take longer and you do have the animals to feed the thrown away portion. I talked with my daughter on the phone last night. Her husband had made apple pie. Tis the season! Yummy!
