Fun fact: LBJ loved his Cricket so much, that he ordered and gave away 200 Crickets as presents to dignitaries while he was US president. He used the alarm to get out of boring meetings frequently. Cheers.
The Vulcain Cricket is a technological marvel. How they included an alarm function in a tiny 36 millimeter watch is amazing. And the Vulcain looks good on the wrist. It is the only hand-wind watch in my collection, and winding the watch before you use it establishes an awesome relationship between watch and wearer.
My dad bought a Vulcain Cricket in 1948 while stationed in Singapore, he was a navigator on Sunderland flying boats and would wear it all the time .He passed it on to me in 1964 when I was eight and I wore it until it stopped in the mid nineties . It was never a dress watch but a tool to wake us up in the morning , it got the nick name of the dying fly which is what the alarm sounds like if you let it wind down .
It fair to say WIS Forum communities have always talked about the Cricket in the same vein as an Airman or a Spaceview. They are all iconic pieces and important parts of horological history. It’s great to see the brand back up and running again, and doing their own history proud.
This is a very cool watch that appeals to me. I will be turning 60 this month, born in 64 and growing up in the 70's I've seen what we call today, vintage watches in the 60 year olders at that time, and this is really reminiscent of those. So cool. The Bell Canto is a bit bulky, but this is flat being hand winding. I don't have the 3 thousand to spare now, but understand the ones who will. Thanks for the historic perspective on this brand.
I do love the cricket, but due to money constraints, I bought a mechanical Russian Poljot alarm watch for about £100 which does the job. Good on you to get this watch though, I would treasure it and keep it.
I found out about the Vulcain Cricket from a 1999 Wired magazine article about watch collecting by William Gibson. I bought a circa-1956 Cricket from a New Zealand collector in 2007. I love that watch.
My goodness there are a lot of hard to please folk in the comments.Regardless it is a a lovely looking watch. You did it justice in your review my friend.👍
Crickets are awesome, but verrrry expensive. I came across a vintage 60’s cricket for $150 in a recent estate sale, but unfortunately I balked on it and lost it. I did come home with a 70’s GP gold filled gyromatic with the original box though
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR nice review its a beautiful watch great history , good to see both vulcian and nevada via there owner utilizing their iconic peices .id take this over the del canto
Very cool indeed. I first saw a Vulcain on TGV’s Channel. Although if I have the money for this (which I don’t if anyone cares 😅) I would have to plunk my name down on the Bel Canto waiting list instead. Thanks for the great review!
Seiko made a range of watches called the Bellmatic that had the same automatic movement with an alarm function. You can pick them up for a couple of hundred quid. (Edit: should have read through more comments...a few people beat me to it. They are great though!).
Glad you knew the history of the Cricket, I was dreading texting you the history of the brand. I just wish it was a bit bigger 39-40mm ,8.125" wrist. Very tempting however as it's unique.👍
Welcome to the world of nice classy pieces. If your collecting and taste journey goes anything like mine, you'll end up doing more on the dressy end of the spectrum. But the Cricket is pure class. I've been too stingy to buy one, but I've been admiring them, so I have to admit to feeling a slight pang of envy when you said you got one from Nivada. Lucky bastard! And I mean that in the best of ways. :) Enjoy it!
Great colour combo , such a elegant looking dress watch worthy of my wrist , just wish it was cheaper but can understand the price for the movement , but many people probaly not heard of Vulcain watches unless your a vintage watch lover. I actually own a alarm watch a old Poljot watch that cost me £50 years ago
Awesome thanks for honesty, looks like cool watch, reminds me of an Orient Bambino. The movement is beautiful, not my style really though I’m in my Casio Edifice era. Quartz is a good option for me.
I've been wearing his dress shoes since before I knew he wore them. Obama wears them too, they're Johnston and Murphys. I was always surprised by that, I figured he'd wear Gucci or something.
Only in America do they vote for a career criminal that simulates having oral sex with a microphone on national tv. They will rue the day once this orange monster gets back into office. Great watch your Seiko.
That's quite a watch with an interesting history. No wonder it's in the territory of Longines Master collection. Mind you for the same money you could have the Longines Moonphase Chronograph. A fantastic watch packed with so many complications and still would look perfect with a suit.
Very elegant timepiece, as Obi Wan Kenobi could have said “an elegant watch for a more civilised age” Not for me with my 7.25ins wrist. I’m more for rugged, sturdy dve, chronos, pilot watches like you MWC. Mrs Mrs MWC on fire as usual! Big knob over the small knob with an old man’s strap! LOVE IT!!! 😂
To be honest mad man i think I'd rather go for a presage and pocket the 2 grand, but that's the beauty of this hobby of ours, something for everybody ✌️🙂
@@oz836 anything you’d have a go at other than the price?? Loved the watch . But then again I’m no journalist ! I’m a watch fan that’s worked hard on a watch channel . You obviously haven’t been with the channel long enough to trust my integrity chief
This is one of the rarest mechanical watch complications you can get! This is almost too cheap for what it offers. A cocktail time doesn't hold a candle to this (no offense to Seiko) And if its worth anything, I did not get a free watch and I'll talk good things about it all day long
I've admired the Cricket, along with the Fortis Brainmatic and Seiko Bellmatic for a longt time, unfortunately the budget never stretched to them so I wound up with a Poljot Signal. Still fun though.
This is a super watch, great review, but there is something you did not mention about the brand vulcain. Something a certain other brand makes a really big deal about which could well be in real doubt. you don’t win a prize for getting it. it’s something you would tell anyone who asked about the watch along with the President Story
Be honest now, Russ. Did you swap a Seiko alpinist strap onto that Vulcain?! It's a lovely watch. Not going top of my bucket list, but you've made me aware of the maker. Lovely to hear a mechanical alarm on a watch.
I love this watch. But I’d be interested in their sales numbers. It’s just such a niche product that I can name probably 25 watches I would buy before this at that price. I feel they priced themselves out of the market. Bring it down to earth, and I bet more people would take a chance on this. Glad they let you keep it!
I have two belmatic 1967 -1977 first is a 27j home only watch better that this pup I can send u if u like and a tiger eye belmatic gold watch suppers yes me got I u like 👍🏻
I'm more likely to buy one if it cost a bit more and had more luxurious movement finishing. It was a practical watch in the 50s. Now it's something you choose emotionally
I love the MWC channel along with several similar shows, but I'm starting to have trouble accepting these reviews when the watch is gifted to the reviewer, and then not returned or given away. And if in this case the only negative mentioned is the price (for a watch that costs a reviewer nothing) followed by a long rationalisation, it's a bit hard to take the review seriously. Plenty of other channels operate in a similar manner, so I'm not singling MWC out, but I just wish these reviews were for watches bought with the reviewer's own money (or a loan watch), and only then reviewed after some real time on wrist.
Fun fact: LBJ loved his Cricket so much, that he ordered and gave away 200 Crickets as presents to dignitaries while he was US president. He used the alarm to get out of boring meetings frequently. Cheers.

That was great value for a Poljot, I looked at these as I have a Vostok kamaraski (excuse spelling) and they were expensive.

They ought to change the nickname of that watch to YOUR PRESIDENT
The right president has won.

That pale salmon dial looks far more metallic here than whenever I've seen it elsewhere.
That would look really nice with slacks and a Polo shirt.
Is there a way to disable the alarm if you don't need it?
where can i get the watch?
I do like this watch but on the bigger size. However Ball has just taken out the alarm GMT which I think might suit me better

Can anyone explain why there is a 0 to 60 with 10, 30 and 50 marked between each minute marker?
Well, the size is not that special, Seiko Bellmatic is also 36 mm (and it's automatic, with day/date), also russian Strela is 36 mm.
That’s an alarm setting track round the outside of the dial.
I think it would look nicer if the alarm pusher was shorter more like a button it sticks out to much and ruines the shape of the watch
What a special thing!
I does truly look stunning
Of all the complications an alarm IMO is the most worthless. Cracking piece, though!
Moon phase enters the chat (as cool as it can be)
