FYI: Proper practice - Never just pull a mic off a measured part without first locking the thimble. The pulling off motion can turn the cylinder before you look at it giving you an incorrect reading.

hey man liked and subscribed.. more then apprecaite guys like you that make videos to help us people out. I have a quick question if its not too much, I recently took the piston out of my 2002 honda crf450r and got a measurement of 95.97-95.98mm and my cylinder is 96.00-96.01, what size piston should I be looking at or how much clearance is usually acceptable

Does the piston ring have a circular form (ID/OD) before and after installation? How does it maintain circular form without gapping in other areas when installed?

Because of the gap, the diameter of the ring can change to conform to the bore of the cylinder. The ring must be compressed slightly (decrease the gap) to fit into the cylinder, so there is always slight tension against the cylinder wall.

When using the feeler gauge how much force do you use? If I can force a .021 do I have to buy new rings

You should never have to force the the feeler gauge. I should should slide with only the slightest resistance.

@@JustinMillerAutomotive ok thanks. I believe I'm doing it wrong. I thought I had a .019 gap and when I force it I can go up to .021

Very nice explanation ! I would like to know if you ever measure the distance between piston to cylinder wall by a filler gauge? What distance do you feel is the best ? I have a 2 stroke motor ! TIA

No, typically, you would measure the piston and then measure the cylinder. The difference between those two measurements is your clearance.

@@JustinMillerAutomotive what is the clearance you should have in a 2 stroke motor ?

Our teacher told us to measure at highest point of the skirt

On some pistons that is true, but it isn't as common. If you look in your service information, it should give you a specification and tell you where to measure the piston.

@@JustinMillerAutomotive On my Particular engine the book says 41mm from top of piston. Which winds up being right about where you were. Thx

What company manufactures the best quality Pistons for a 2 stroke ?

What is the thickness of the filler gauge that you are using ?

It varies a little bit from engine to engine. You should find your specification for "piston ring side clearance" or "piston ring groove clearance." Use the correct feeler gauge sizes to make sure that the clearance is not less than the minimum specification or greater than the maximum. It is usually about 0.001"-0.002" Also, move the ring around in the groove and make sure that it doesn't bind or stick in the groove at all.
