I'll definitely be covering my foam board now...I might have missed how to did it (its late and I should sleep but instead I can't stop watching art videos) but super smart! This was a lovely video. Love your set up! Velcro is a great idea...and what would artists do without clips :) i love mine too. Your painting was beautiful as well!!! Thanks so much for sharing!! :)
Thank you so much Jade! I love thinking of news ways to make painting easier. I'm happy to be able to share useful tips that I learn along my art journey with other like minded artists! Clips and Velcro are some of the best little inventions ever! I didn't show in the video how I made the artboard but that's a good idea for another video! Basically I just wrapped a 9x12 foam matt board with clear packing/shipping tape. The tape works great to make the board waterproof. It is the best way that I came up with for making sturdy lightweight artboards. I have several and can always use more. I like having them in different sizes to tape down different size watercolor papers or sketchbooks.
@@kimberlyhyltonart thanks so much!! I also have several sizes of foam boards for the same reason...large to small. I did a huge batch of simple thank you cards and was happy I had the large one cuz I taped down like a 12 or 18 card at a time and did 2 boards worth so then I could get them all done together. But having the board all taped off would be better and the boards would definitely last longer. I had some teal duct tape, but you're idea of clear packing tape is great! I'll be working on that! I love art supplies, office supplies...they make me happy ;) And love seeing what other artists do because there's always more to learn!! Thank so much for sharing!!🥰
@@jadetobin Hi Jade! This would work great for making thank you cards! If you like taping down watercolor paper to your board this would be perfect because the tape is easy to remove from these boards. I just got finished making another video on how I make the artboards if you are interested in seeing it. I hope you enjoy making your own art board and please let me know how it works out for you! Have a great day! th-cam.com/video/kil1nAbK2cI/w-d-xo.html
What a great set-up. I really like the idea of the dot cards. Thanks for showing what it looks like in use (messy) and demonstrating it. It looks like something I'd personally love using.
Thank you! The dot cards can get messy but they are fun to play with. They make really great mini disposable palettes! I like having several ones in various color combinations for neat little limited palettes of colors that work well together. If you try it out please let me know how it works for you. Thanks!
You have put together a very nice plein air setup. What a cleave idea to make dot cards for your pallet. For my board I went to tap plastics and got an off cut, for rather inexpensive. Some painters I know purchased a thin plastic cutting board from the dollar tree. For anyone looking for a small water mister, I found that the bottles of glasses cleaner the eye doctors hand out work really well. Lovely drawings/painting. Thank you for sharing.
Once again, dear Kimberly, I applaud your inventiveness. Inspired by your good self, I am contemplating a lightweight working board. I love the way we 'balm-pot artists' are constantly trying to discover the perfect set-up. We may never discover utter perfection but isn't it fun trying to? Every good wish across the pond Paul in the UK Midlands
I can’t help but try to constantly think of new and better ways of doing things. My sketch kit is always changing to suit my ever evolving ideas and the size of the paper I want to use. And where I am painting. I have at least a half a dozen kits that I play with. I am currently very fond of the foldable sketch board that I have been using in recent plein air videos. I am thinking of making a bigger one to hold bigger watercolor paper or blocks.
@@kimberlyhyltonart Dear Lady - there is no such ting as the perfect set-up and we must be satisfied by just trying in our own way to produce it - but, of course, we never will, but it is a lot of fun (and frustration) trying! How does it go? I've got a terrific case but the things I want f won't fit into it. I've got my perfect combo but can't find the ideal case to put it in After all these centuries, we are still pioneers. Why not get a mega-tube of blue and another of sand yellow with a few extra primary colours and create a seriously ridiculous creation and let it cost millions - like that half-cocked Hockney. Are we that sort of painter? I hope not! Do what you do and thank God for your gift. Every good wish Paul in the UK Midlands.
Thank you so much! Yes, I think you should make one. This kind of sketch board is so lightweight and easy to make. Having all your stuff attached to a board makes painting outside a lot easier. Good luck!
That’s awesome! 🙂 I’m so happy you made one! I think contact paper would be great for this. I just didn’t have any on hand when I started making these boards. Also, for a smaller paper or sketchbook, I started scoring the board and snapping them in half so they fold. Reinforcing with packing tape. That way I can have my painting vertical if I want. I made a couple of videos on how to make them if you haven’t seen them yet. I like having a variety of options. Good luck!
You’re welcome!🙂 I think that paint box is the perfect size for this setup. I gifted mine to a child who has taken a interest in watercolor. But, it works so well that I’m thinking of picking up another one.
Thank you! I'm so happy you enjoyed this video! You should try outdoor painting, it is so rewarding! You will learn so much by painting nature in nature. It is also very relaxing and enjoyable. I am originally from Kentucky, but I live in Virginia now. Some of my ancestors came from Ireland and settled in Kentucky. Ireland is so beautiful and rich in history. I would love to go there for a visit one day! Good luck on your watercolor journey! Much love from across the pond!
Love your set up! Mine is similar, but I use a clipboard. I like the idea of the light foam board. 🙂. What colors are in your palette and what brand. Thanks!
Hi Carol! Thank you! I use a clipboard sometimes too. I am always looking for ways to simplify and make my kit lighter. I'm a little obsessed with paint and palettes so I have different palettes filled with different combinations of paint. But for this small travel palette I filled it will colors that I felt would be the most useful for landscape paintings. The colors in this palette is a mix between Daniel Smith and Da Vinci Watercolors. I really like both of these brands and used them interchangeably. Hansa Yellow Light by Daniel Smith, Hansa Yellow Deep by Da Vinci, Quinacridone Magenta by Daniel Smith, Da Vinci Red ( A Pyrrol Red) by Da Vinci, French Ultramarine Blue by Daniel Smith, Phthalo Blue by Da Vinci, Ultramarine Violet by Da Vinci, Yellow Ocher by Da Vinci, Burnt Sienna by Da Vinci, Raw Umber by Da Vinci, Burnt Umber by Da Vinci, and Denise's Green ( A Sap Green) by Da Vinci.
I appreciate you saying that! Thank you! I make these sketch boards with foam core boards. I ordered a five pack of the 9x12 size from Blick. But you can find them anywhere. You can also use the foam presentation boards kids use for science projects. Here is the link to the ones I bought. The are cheap, lightweight and very sturdy. If you wrap them with packing tape they are waterproof! www.dickblick.com/items/pre-cut-foamboard-9-x-12-x-316-white-5-sheets/

Coroplast (light plastic made like cardboard) also works well for a support board. It can even be free; it is commonly used for political and other yard signs, which have a limited useful lifetime--after the election they are thrown away. And it is waterproof.
