I graduate in the spring as a geologist. I am doing sediment, volcanology and petroleum. It captures so many sides. But I’m in love with all of. I’ve taken petroleum, paleobiology, sedimentology, stratigraphy, petroleum/volcanology and geophysics. I LOVE geology!!!

After having completed my Ph.D. in Geology, more specifically geostatistics applied to mineral resources, I recommend everybody to learn some kind programming language as soon as possible in their academic or professional lives. Interpreting data is the key point to become less replaceable in industry.
That is probably by far the best advice coming from a fellow geologist! Data management skills becoming very important and definitely adding to one's job security. Programming in general is a very useful skill to have.

@@AJSchnell I am titled "field geologist" but the job actually entails doing quality control of construction sites amd sampling concrete from concrete trucks. It's a good job, but hardly "geology". Though there is a lot of technical stuff on how to read building plans and working to complete a building project day by day.. (you also have to monitor the building site as soil is added and compacted onto a building pad) Look up "concrete sampling" and "soil compaction with a nuclear gauge" If you watch the videos on those two topics, your local "field geologist" company should probably hire you. Spring/summer seems to be their busy time. (Sorry if I came across cynical, but this job seems a decent enuf entry level job.. I'm just a bitter person who job hopped for a while. I'm 33 yrs old.)
This is accurate. I'm a Wellsite Geologist in Texas and it's common for us to spend 2, 3 sometimes 5 months working everyday without days off in the field. Not for the weak minded or those who get homesick easily

@@noname.8047 In the Bologna system (Europe) it's 3 years for the Bachelor's degree, after which you could call yourself a geologist, but for serious job chances do a Master's degree, so 5 years. If you want shorter studies, look into becoming a Mining engineer, 2-3y max.

Thank you for your kind comment! Where are you located? Different countries have different system. In Canada, we don't have to do college we can go straight into geology program at University and geology program is part of the science faculty.

Haha, rigging up and getting your gas readings is very simple once you learn. It would take you little time to understand. The problem is when everything decides to break and the rig is drilling 500 ft/hr and you're losing data trying to get your shit back up running.. LOL
You probably do not have the background in math (calculus/diff eq), chemistry (two semesters of inorganic chem minimum) and two semesters of university physics; so you will need to complete a lot of leveling work.
At the moment I'm a qualified artisan but I've developed a love for prospecting but at the moment I'm limited to explore and and need more education to go in deph on how the minerals that I look for and find formed and how thay got there and and I realized I'm quite talented at it
Geophysics is applied PHYSICS. Geology has more of an emphasis on CHEMISTRY. Paleontology is BIOLOGY. What you prefer is up to you, but geophysics is very intensive math & physics - is that your passion?
I'm completed MSc geology but there is no jobs in india ,only recommendation people got jobs, Govt have only limited jobs this sector , its right , weaste of time.
You should give GATE. A good score will help you land jobs in private companies/ semi govt/ govt organizations. Also, please have a look at UPSC with Geology subject for Geological Survey of India
