This is how the Subaru SVX attempted to enter the luxury/performance category

  • The Subaru SVX was intended to be a uniquely designed, luxury/performance coupe spanning from model years 1992 through 1997.
The Subaru SVX didn't compete with the likes of the 300ZX, Toyota Supras or similar cars. It was more of a class in its own.
The Giugiaro-designed Subaru SVX came standard with all-wheel drive initially, then offered front wheel drive.
Subaru was looking to banish its “cheap car” image. And it was assumed that a sporty coupe loaded with tech and concept-car quirks could be the type of car to do just that. Subaru had lofty expectations and was planning on moving 10,000 SVXs annually.
The SVX’s only connection to its predecessor, the XT6, was the water-cooled flat-six engine, but even that was significantly revamped from the XT6. The 2.7 liter now displaced 3.3 liters. Overhead cams transitioned from single to dual, and valves per cylinder from two to four. Further modifications included a new resonance induction system, lofty 10:1 compression, and more intelligent electronics.
With all that came a potent 230 horses, 224 pound-feet of torque, and a revving to a 6500-rpm redline. While all of this sounded great on paper, in reality, the 230 horsepower was simply too much power for any of Subaru’s manual transmissions.
Therefore, Subaru only offered the SVX with a four-speed automatic. At the time, this was the only transmission that could effectively handle the engine’s power.

AWESOME VIDEO!! The production quality and level of detail was epic! The SVX was definitely underrated and needs more recognition. Thanks for making these videos acknowledging these types of cars~ These 90s era of cars are far more interesting than today's models. The older cars had more of a driver to car connection. Can't wait for the next vid!

This was simply marvelous. Calling this a mere “video” doesn’t do it justice. This is more of a well thought-out and executed documentary that’s worthy of national television. And giving credit to these often forgotten cars is a great deed. Outstanding job, sir 👍🏻

At the start I thought this was a vhs transfer but as I’m watching I’m instead surprised & seriously impressed by your quite evident hard work creating this. Really excellent!! Always have loved the idiosyncratic SVX & it’s great to discover a doc of this caliber about it :) Also, memory lane....when my (then) Civic was stolen my mother gave me her Acura Legend, an almost identical example to the one in the beginning of the vid. It was 2-tone, grey/darker grey. Still miss it!

Hi there 👋. Yes it is quite a bit of work producing these vids, but it’s definitely worth it-recognizing and sharing the history of these fine automobiles. Sorry that happened with your Civic, but I’m also glad to hear you got to experience the Acura Legend. Great cars indeed! Thanks for tuning in.

@@MotorMaster_Stunticon Hey thanks for replying friend, and you should definitely be proud of all this effort! I’m sure you are but just saying :) The saddest thing about the Civic was A) a week before an idiot blew a stop sign and hit me drivers side - thus had it repaired & frankly the paint job was great, B) literally installed a Kenwood system 2 weeks before, and C)was finally stolen during a first date w a girl, and I had a full tank of gas damnit. Sigh. But that Legend L was amazing, ended up being really lucky! Cheers

Thank you for another video. It was educational and informative. I had no idea Subaru had so much trouble. I recall all the cars you shared. When you think Subaru you think Legacy, the sports car sedan and 4 wheel drive vehicles. That is what they sell now. They did play to their strengths.

Yep they had a lot of issues with the car, selling it at least. It was an overall good car, and got great response at the auto show, but once on sale, no one bought them. Typical.

Well made and very informative video! I bought a 92 model ten years ago for $2000, an awesome deal as it was a single owner car with relatively low mileage and full options, it is called CH-pack here in Switzerland, there's even a stock 6 CD-changer in the trunk. This car is a dream to drive and still going strong today without any major work needed.
It's funny how people never know what this car actually is. A few years ago, while entering a parking field at a music festival, the staff laughed at me and told me there was no way I'll be able to get out as a storm was coming. I answered something like " You're kidding me, it's a 4WD". The next day, the field had become a swamp, the organizers had to ask farmers to come with their tractors and get all the stuck vehicles out. Again, people laughed at me and my friends when we casually entered the SVX but not so much when we drove away after having done a few farewell donuts. 🤪

Another excellent video that I thoroughly enjoyed watching - I even learned something new! I never knew that Subaru offered a FWD version. While never a big SVX fan I liked its styling and found it quite comfortable. Unfortunately I never did get the chance to drive it. I never understood Subaru's reason behind this car as it really had no discernable place in the market outside of a highly focused grand tourer. Its looks said sports car but omitted the manual and RWD for enthusiasts. It didn't offer a high performance model to compete with the big dogs. The obnoxious plastic wood screamed tacky Detroit pseudo-luxury but was screwed together in a quality Japanese way. I never did care for the window-in-a-window windows but appreciated that the rears did roll down. The AWD was a nice touch but I didn't find it useful outside of a snowy climate. Overall I thought it was a nice car but there were much better options to this late teen early 20s something. But oh how I miss the Japanese car revolution of the mid 80s to the mid 90s. What a marvelous time to be alive! Great music, too!

Was a Japanese Mercury Cougar, too heavy to be a true sports car, but not luxurious enough to compete with Mercedes or Cadilliac. That it was a new entry into a dying segment, as semi-luxury coupes market share was being eaten by the SUV.

@@MotorMaster_Stunticon The current model it would compare to is the Kia Stinger. And I agree that it was a cool car. The Diamond star motors cars and Ford Probe muddled what a Japanese touring coupe should be, which was fairly sporty but not expensive for the market for what looked the same-ish appearance wise to the Subaru. The SVX came to market when the Probe and Eclipses had saturated the market a year before. That the SVX was more a Japanese T-Bird than a Probe, just did not compute with buyers. Add to that, the Movie Robocop's advertised car, the SUX being so, so similar in name, made the younger me giggle reading about it, and unintentionally made the car uncool via name alone.
