High elbow catch is a very useful technique to swim faster and save more energy. I used to swim leaving my elbows very low, which forced my shoulders so much, that an entire week my left shoulder hurt. But when I started using this technique, not only was I swimming faster and recovering easier from the point when I was rolling on a side to breathe, but also had no more shoulder pain. So... this is an excellent technique!

The arm path for HALO is relative to the body's shoulder plane - it is a correct movement path regardless of the body's long axis rotation. Derived from charting underwater footage of All-American Klete Kellar at UM. If you assess arm position (relative to the body) when the elbow is at 3'oclock position, you will get it. Realize the arm is under you at this point if you were rotating in the water. Too hard to make the bench rotate, but "relational" approach addresses long axis rotation.

Good video. Very clear. Like that he touches on the shoulder injury aspect as this is why I'm investigating this technique

@SpVad123 Yes, it's the "Halo Swim Training System". The guy in the video is the inventor. You can order the system from Lane Gainer Sports at the Lanegainer website.

You are absolutely right! it is just not high elbow, it is a high elbow with body rotation, is keeping the elbow high while rotating, so it feels natural.

High elbow catch applies to both freestyle and fly - high elbow is important in both strokes! Have a coach watch the position of your forearm for each - and make sure you get that part right for each stroke.

Yeah does look like it makes the stroke sweep out more, but maybe its just to focus on the catch pahse of the stroke and nothing else :)

Poor description of the damage-prevention side of the high elbow catch. Otherwise pretty good!

Don't waste your money. Incline bench and two freeweight cables. Should be available in pretty much every single gym. Only thing missing is that blue thing, but just focus on keeping your elbows 90 degrees to your shoulders.

I do not understand "shoulder injury comment". "this sets your up for pushing versus pulling...." how does he mean that? If ppl are having pull shoulder injury due to this alignment....what is the diff. between pull and push in this technique....i think he failed to show that..

Really? This brings the shoulder into internal rotation and an impingment position. The internal rotators of the shoulder are very small compared to the lat dorsi (pullers) of the shoulder. The lat dorsi is the second biggest muscle in the body why are we not trying to use that?

Yes, this is what I am looking for when I well enough to take up swimming again. When young I won easily doing the butterfly, but was quite average doing freestyle. When I reflect, it was the engagement of the lats that helped me excel in the fly, and maybe spinalis muscles too. I would like to use them in freestyle, and straight arm seems to be one way, but I would like to do it for middle distance, so perusing sites looking for ideas, unless I can build up my strength and stamina in the lats to do a mile, or so. OPen to ideas.

It is not a correct movement because the HALO won't teach you the most important thing in freestyle, which is the body rotation. Elbow does not stay near the surface all the time alike this machine suggests! With our rotation it travels deeper and then comes back to the surface.
